London,Michael Faraday followed up the work of Dane Hans Christian, who, altered by a twitching compass needle, inferred that electricity and magnetism were linked together.Faraday developed the electric motor and then,a decade later, found that a magnet moving in a wire coil (圈)induced a current. In 1845,he stated the basis of modern physics, the field theory of electromagnetism.‎ As the story is usually told, the prime minister or some other senior politician was given a demonstration(示范)of induction by Faraday. When asked, “What good is it?” Faraday replied,“What good is a newborn baby?” Or maybe he said,“Soon you will be able to pay for it.” The former version of the story originated in a letter sent in 1783 by Faraday’s great predecessor in matters electrical, the American philosopher and politician Benjamin Franklin. As for the source of the latter,no one knows. ‎ Whatever was said at the time, the lesson is that it can take half a century for an investment in basic science to bear fruit.Faraday’s insights were applied in the 1850s in a failed attempt to build an electrically lit lighthouse, and in long-distance telegraph signalling—which led to the Atlantic telegraph cable. But it was not until the 1880s that electric power began to be widely used.‎ Frank James, professor of the history of science at the Royal Institution, points to a twist(曲折) in the story of the encounter(遭遇).True or not,it took root and was put in to use in the 1880s,when the great biologist Thomas Huxley and the physicist John Tyndall campaigned for the government to fund science. They succeeded.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎1.How could Faraday find that a magnet moving in a wire coil induced a current?‎ A.By chance.‎ B.He was inspired by the twitching compass needle.‎ C.He was inspired by Dane Hans Christian’s discovery.‎ D.He knew electricity and magnetism could be linked together.‎ 答案C 解析细节理解题。 联系第一段的“Michael Faraday followed up the work of Dane Hans Christian, who, altered by a twitching compass needle...” ‎ ‎2.We can infer from the passage that in the beginning . ‎ A.no one believed Faraday’s discovery B.the government didn’t realize the value of the discovery C.Faraday didn’t make his discovery clear D.it was easy to build an electrically lit lighthouse 答案B 解析推理判断题。 联系文章第二段官员们的提问“What good is it?” ‎ ‎3.What do the underlined words “the latter” mean in the second paragraph?‎ A.The latter letter.‎ B.The latter version of the story.‎ C.The latter scientists.‎ D.The latter discovery.‎ 答案B 解析词义猜测题。题干关键词为“the underlined words ‘the latter’ mean”,可定位于第二段。 The former version of the story我们可以知道,这个故事有两个版本,the latter指故事的另一个版本。‎ ‎4.What’s the attitude of the author to the investment of Faraday’s discovery?‎ A.It is a great decision.‎ B.It was carried out at a proper time.‎ C.The government should have carried it out earlier.‎ D.It would benefit the people greatly.‎ 答案C 解析推理判断题。题干关键词为“the attitude of the author”,可定位于第三段。 ‎ 四、语篇填空 导学号91364028‎ ‎(语言能力 学习能力)‎ A young man, while traveling through a desert, came across a spring of clear water. 1 water was sweet. He filled his leather container so that he could bring some back to an elder 2 had been his teacher. After a four-day journey, the young man 3 (present)the water to the old man.His teacher took a deep drink, smiled 4 (warm),and thanked his student very much for the sweet water. The young man went home 5 a happy heart. ‎ After the student left, the teacher let 6 student taste the water. He spit it out, 7 (say) it was awful.Apparently,it was no 8 (long) fresh because of the old leather container. He asked his teacher,“Sir,the water was awful. Why did you pretend to like it?” The teacher replied,“You tasted the water.I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an act of 9 (kind) and love.Nothing could be 10 (sweet).”We understand this lesson best when we receive gifts of love from children.Whether it is a cheap pipe or a diamond necklace, the proper response is appreciation. We love the idea within the gift rather than the thing. ‎ ‎1. 2.
