Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York in 1922. As a son of workingclass Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby singlebedroom apartment. After graduating from high school at 16, Lieber landed a job as an assistant at Timely Comics. By the early 1940s, he was a temporary editor for the company. It was at this time that he began using his pen name—Stan Lee. In 1947, two years after returning from serving for the U.S. Army, Lee married his wife, Joan. The two began their 70year marriage and had two children. In the late 1950s, DC Comics breathed new life into its classic superhero and experienced a significant success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with superteam the Justice League of America. To compete against DC Comics, Lee was given the task of creating their own group of superheroes. In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics, and that November saw the debut(首次亮相) of the Fantastic Four. Lee’s later famous and lasting creations of comicbook superheroes included SpiderMan, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and the XMen. Over the course of his career, Lee was an icon of Marvel Comics. As a writer and editor and, at various points, both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics, Lee not only introduced interesting characters to the industry, but changed the way that comic books came together. He also created a cooperative workflow between writers and artists, which became known as the “Marvel Method”. Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008 for his innovations that revolutionized American comic books. 1.What do we know about Lee from paragraph 2? A.He served for the U.S. Army for two years. B.He suffered from an unfortunate marriage. C.He had a tough and struggling childhood. D.He adopted his pen name at the age of 16. 2.What was the company called when SpiderMan was created? A.Timely Comics. B.Marvel Comics. C.Atlas Comics. D.DC Comics. 3.What does the underlined word“icon” in the last paragraph mean? A.Statue. B.Agent. C.Assistant. D.Symbol. 4.What can be the best title for the text? A.Stan Lee, the Godfather of Marvel Comics B.The Development of Marvel Comics C.Stan Lee, a Superhero in Comic Books D.The Popular Superheroes of Marvel Comics 第七组 Ⅰ. allocate“分配”;release“发表,发布”;promote“提高”;polish“润色,修改”。 run into“偶然遇见,陷入,撞上”;burst out“突然开始,爆发”,burst out laughing“突然大笑起来”;yell out“喊出,大声叫喊”;fall into“开始,陷入(某种状态)”,故选B项。 unique“独特的,独一无二的”;previous“先前的”;unforgettable“难忘的”;appropriate“适当的”。 work out“锻炼,算出”;stand out“显眼,突出”;hold out“坚持”;set out“出发,开始工作”。 can’t agree more“ 完全同意”;easy does it“小心些”;you don’t say“不会吧,真的吗”。 Ⅱ. 1.B 解析:根据上文中的“Going, going, gone—for $3 to the bidder No.43.” 2.C 解析:根据下文中的“I chatted with the owner of the biscuit can”可知,作者通过拍卖得到的是一个二十世纪五十年代的饼干罐,故选C。 6.A 解析:根据本句中的“Her eyes fell on it”可推知,作者把饼干罐拿给这位女士看。show“给…… 7.B 解析:根据本句中的“so we could view the contents”可推知,作者打开了饼干罐,以便看到里面的东西。 8.D 解析:根据上文中的“an old lady who would be moving to a nursing home”可知,这个饼干罐之前的主人是一位年纪很大的女士,由此可推知她应是用颤抖的(trembling)手抓起一把纽扣,又缓慢地(slowly)让它们落到饼干罐里,故选D。 9.C 10.A 解析:由与下文中的“I pulled out a large, dark military button.” take over“接管”;put away“把(某物)收拾起来(放回原处)”;set aside“留出,拨出”。 13.B 解析:根据本句中的“one of the few things”和“remind me of him”可推知,那个大的黑色的军用纽扣是那位女士所拥有的为数不多的纪念丈夫的物品,故选B。 suffer“遭受”;praise“表扬”;question“质询,怀疑”。 15.D 解析:根据上文中的“I took a look and saw hundreds of buttons and other articles.” 16.B 解析:结合本句中的“her wedding, the birth of her children”可知,这些都是那位女士生活中发生的事,故选B。 17.B 解析:根据上文中的“As the ______ in the can took her further down the memory lane”可推知,这个饼干罐承载了那位女士的诸多生活记忆,故选B。 18.D 解析:结合本句中的“I would be visiting her, just as I knew”以及“I reached my house”可推知,此处并非假设,而是表示时间,故选D。 success“成功的人(或事物)”;treasure“宝物,珍品”;failure“失败”。 Ⅲ. 根据第二段中的“As a son of workingclass Jewish immigrants from Romania, times were hard and he lived with his family in a shabby singlebedroom apartment.” 根据第四段中的“In 1961, Timely Comics changed its name into Marvel Comics after Atlas Comics”可知,公司的名字按照时间顺序依次为Timely Comics→Atlas Comics→Marvel Comics,《神奇四侠》于1961年首次推出,而《蜘蛛侠》是之后创作的,所以创作《蜘蛛侠》时公司的名称应是漫威(Marvel Comics)。
