B Growing up in Joilet, Illinois, in the 1930s, George Mikan often felt everyone was staring at him. Tall and awkward (笨拙的), with thick glasses, he tried to hide by lowering himself when walking and sitting. But someday, everyone would know his name, The Tall Kid By age16, Mikan made the high school basketball team. Now 6 feet 8 inches tall and broad-shouldered, his specialty was guarding the basket and blocking shots. At 6 feet 10 in a sport then dominated (主导) by much smaller men, George Mikan was the model for the dominating tall players of later decades. Towering over most of his competitors, he was one of the most effective scorers of his day, averaging 22.6 points over a professional career that lasted nine seasons. How dominant was Mikan? In his nine seasons, his teams won seven titles and in 1950 he was selected the greatest player of the halfcentury. One of the legendary stories about Mikan concerns a game played on Dec.13, 1949, between the Lakers and the New York Knicks. The grand screen over Madison Square Garden read: “Geo. Mikan vs. Knicks.” When Mikan walked into the locker room before the game, he found his teammates sitting around in their street clothes. One of them greeted Mikan by saying, “They're advertising you're playing against the Knicks, so go play them. We'll wait here.” Mikan was so dominant that the NBA made two big rules changes during his career. They tried to make it more difficult for him to score by expanding the width of the key from six feet to 12 feet and they started the 24second clock after a game in 1950, when the Fort Wayne Pistons decided that the only way they could win was to hold onto the ball and not let the Lakers have it. They ended up winning, 1918, in the lowestscoring game in NBA history. Mikan was in the first class elected to the basketball Hall of Fame in 1959. “Frankly, without George Mikan, the Los Angeles Lakers would not be the organization we are today,” Lakers owner Jerry Buss said. Magic Johnson also _paid_tribute_to Mikan: “He started the championships. You've got to start with Mikan first before you name any Laker. He paved the way for all of us who came after him.” 24.How did Mikan react to his height before reaching 16. A.Feeling proud. B.Showing it off. C.Taking its advantage. D.Feeling ashamed. 25.What can be learned about Mikan from the text? A.He made a successful scorer as a towering man. B.He required the NBA to change its rules for his good. C.He alone ever played against the Knicks for the Lakers. D.He entered the basketball Hall of Fame in 1950. 26.What can be inferred about the NBA rules? A.Inefficient. B.Steady. C.Adjustable. D.Perfect. 27.The underlined phrase “paid tribute to” in the last paragraph means ________. A.praised B.inspired C.interviewed D.Perfect C Hidden in the mountains of Jordan is the beautiful ancient city of Petra. It lay in ruins for more than a thousand years. Petra was built in 312 BC by the Nabataeans who were an ancient southern Arab people. They were very skilled at carving (刻). It is no wonder that this ancient city has so much to offer! In 363 AD, the city suffered from terrible earthquakes that left most of the city damaged. The buildings and the city's water system were affected. A Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, discovered this city of wonders in 1812. Until he discovered Petra, it had been unheard of in the Western world for about 5 centuries! Petra is the Greek word for stone and this name makes perfect sense because of where the city is located and how some of it is carved into the rock. The ancient city of Petra is also known as the “Rose City”. This is because the rock in which the city is built is a rosered colour. Many of the buildings of Petra have beautiful facades (正面). Some of the facades have columns (柱) carved into the rock, but they are for decoration and they don't actually hold anything up. Petra was built in the middle of the desert, where it hardly ever rained. Luckily, the Nabataeans were very skilled engineers and knew how to live in a hot and dry place. First, they carved channels (渠) to bring water from a nearby spring into the city. Rainwater was also collected in underground channels. The water was then stored. So, even in the long dry months there was enough water for people to use. Today, Petra is one of the world's most famous ancient sites and people come from all over the world to visit it. 28.What do we know about Petra? A.It was built on high mountains. B.It has a history of five centuries. C.It was destroyed by earthquakes. D.It was first visited by westerners in 363. 29.Why was the city named “Petra”? A.Some of it looked rosered. B.Some of it was filled with roses. C.Some of it was home to animals. D.Some of it was built into the rock. 30.What is the purpose of the columns? A.To beautify the buildings. B.To support the buildings. C.To function as gates. D.To serve as tools. 31.Which word can best describe the Nabataeans? A.Honest. B.Creative. C.Hardworking. D.Welleducated. D There's a small problem with a working holiday: working. It seems like a fantastic idea. You picture yourself learning a foreign culture, meeting locals and making friends. What you don't picture is the actual work. Some people manage to keep a fine balance between working and holidaying. I've met plenty of working holidaymakers who are holding highpaying jobs that not only allow them to live in style, but that they also enjoy. Great. For most working holidaymakers, however, that's a daydream. You' re not working overseas to further your career - you're working overseas to further your travelling expenses. And besides, most serious employers will take one look at that yearlong visa (签证), and laugh you out of the building. So you end up doing some of the jobs I' ve done. Fruit picking. I did mine in the north of Scotland, which wasn't satisfying, given it's a place with a summer in name only. Strawberries are a pain. It's a case of bending your back for about eight hours straight. Lettuces aren't much better. Again, more back bending. Is picking fruit a nice way to spend a holiday? No. So I became a line cook at a restaurant in Edinburgh. There, because there were no formal training systems in Scotland, I was handed a white jacket and referred to as a “chef (厨师)”. And as a “chef”, I would pull out boxes of frozen chicken tikka masala (冷冻香料烤鸡咖喱), putting them in the microwave until they were just so. Again, not what you'd call a fun way to spend a holiday. So when you're planning a working holiday, it's worth thinking about what you're actually going to be doing, since that's how you'll spend your time while you're away. Is it going to be enjoyable? Will you be able to meet people, make friends? Is it going to allow you the time and money to do other things, see other places while you're there? Remember, it's not a working holiday if you spend all your time working - it's just work. 32.According to the author, what will happen to most working holidaymakers? A.They will live in style. B.They will enjoy their travelling. C.They can get plenty of good work experience. D.They may have difficulty finding a good job. 33.How does the author feel about his fruit picking experience? A.Tiring. B.Important. C.Interesting. D.Eyeopening. 34.What do we know about the author's job as a line cook? A.He was trained hard. B.He found it very difficult. C.He was doing nothing skilful. D.He learned how to cook chicken. 35.What's the author's advice for those planning a working holiday? A.To stick to their plan. B.To know what to expect. C.To be adventurous. D.To be hardworking. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 [2019·福建南平市高一第二学期期末质检]Good time management allows you to complete more in a shorter period of time, lowers the amount of pressure(压力), and leads to career success.
