M:It's a good photo but you can hardly see the monkey because the elephant is standing in front of it. Text 3 M:Excuse me. Madam, are there any flower shops nearby? W:Yes. There are a few flower shops on this street. The nearest one is about a tenminute walk away. It's on the left of a hotel. Text 4 W:Sam, don't you think Jim works too hard? M:What makes you think so? W:Where can I find him, please? M:He is on the seventh floor. Go down the stairs and turn left. Text 6 M:Excuse me. Did you see a wallet on the table just now? W:Have you lost your wallet? M:Yes. I was eating at this table. I remember taking money out of my wallet to pay the bill. W:What is your wallet like? M:It's black and quite new. Text 10 First of all, let me show you around the library. Now we're here at the entrance. You can see the information desk. Next to the desk, where you can see those old tables, is where we keep the magazines, so you can read there. There, at the back of the library you can see the section for old books. OK, then next to that section, is where we thought it was quietest, and away from the phones and printers and things, so we've put the study desks there. They all connect to the Internet, if you need it for your notebook computer. Next, the rules. Well, over the last two months we've been introducing a new system for this and you can now take books out for six weeks. That's generally enough for most people — we usually get books back within thirty days. You used to have to come in to borrow the books again because we don't like doing it over the phone, as there is no record of it. But now you can do all that through email. 第二部分 阅读理解(共2节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D )中,选出最佳选项。 A The National Blood Service, which covers all of England and North Wales, needs nearly two and a half million blood donations (捐献) each year. When you give blood, you'll be doing one of the most amazing things anybody could dream of — saving a life. What types of blood are needed? All types of blood are needed — not just rare ones. In fact, the commoner the blood type, the more are needed. So even if your blood is one of the most common types — group O for example — you can be sure that by donating three times a year, you really are doing something amazing. What is the donation process? The donation will last about an hour in all. When you arrive, you will be asked a few questions about your health. Then a drop of blood will be taken and tested just to make sure you're not anemic (贫血). If all is well, your donation will be taken. This only takes about ten minutes, during which time 470 ml of blood will be collected. Most people hardly feel a thing. After a short rest, a drink and biscuits, you'll be up and ready to go. All equipment used in the collection of your blood is new and is never reused, so you don't have to worry about risks to your health in the collection of your blood. Who can become a blood donor? Becoming a blood donor really is very simple. As long as you're in good health and aged between 17 and 60, you can become a blood donor. If you would like more information or advice, or you want to become a blood donor, ring the donor helpline on 0845 - 7711. The donor helpline is open 24 hours a day — every day of the year. 【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章通过介绍献血的血型需求、过程和对献血者的要求来号召人们参与献血。 21.Before giving blood, you will ________. Not just any music, but the right kind of music. It may seem strange to say that, but hearing good music played well by a big music group is something that a lot of people no longer experience. Most people are musically illiterate (了解不多的) simply because they have never had any chance to listen to good music. Many people are unfamiliar with the sound of a symphony orchestra (交响乐团). They only hear orchestra music while watching ads and films. But to me a symphony orchestra is the biggest instrument in the world. To hear a full symphony orchestra on stage and to feel the power of the sound — it is like a big wave. It is an amazing experience and it is one that I was lucky enough to grow up with. My mother was a wellknown singer. She had been a member of the Vienna State Opera and the Budapest State Opera and as a baby I was taken along to concerts and stages. I was not necessarily listening to classical music but always good music played well. My mother was the sixteenth child in her family. She was the youngest and by the time she was born, her oldest sister also had a child with whom she shared a bed. With so many loving families around her,my mother grew up happily to be a cheerful woman. Because I lost my father when I was very young, I do not remember much about him. What I do know is largely what I have been told by my mother. I am like him in many ways. He was obviously a very serious man, always appearing sad. I seem to have inherited (继承) something of that from him. Fortunately, I inherited far more of my mother's happiness — a real show business personality (性格). 【语篇解读】 本文是记叙文。妈妈作为音乐工作者的身份让作者有机会欣赏高质量的音乐作品。 24.Why does the author think that most people are musically illiterate? During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses, and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric (织物) to deal with plastic pollution. But there's a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers (超细纤维) could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea. Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic (合成的) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers (下水道) and finally end up in the sea. In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples (样品) from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers. This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants. Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked wellknown clothing companies to support Benign by Design — his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market — Browne didn't get a satisfying answer. Only one women's clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding. 【语篇解读】 本文是议论文。回收旧塑料瓶用来制成衣物,这到底是环保还是破坏环境? 28.What has happened during the past five years? A.Fabric has become much stronger. However, in the late 1990s, Iceland was also known as a country with one of the highest numbers of teen drug abuse (滥用毒品) in Europe. “There were large groups of teenagers getting hopelessly drunk,” American researcher Harvey Milkman said. Noticing their teenagers were out of control, the country decided to do something. With the help of researchers including Harvey Milkman, the government began a special experiment, helping teenagers stay away from drugs. The program, called Youth Iceland, tried to give teens more meaningful and enjoyable things to do. It made kids feel like they were part of something. It also encouraged parents to make time for their children and to actively take part in their lives. The government spent millions of dollars to support new programs for sports, music, arts and dance. Lowincome (低收入的) families — who couldn't afford to sign their kids up for sports programs or art classes — were given a special card of $325 a year. This made it possible for those parents to take part in afterclass activities with their children. Besides, kids between the ages of 13 and 16 were not allowed to go outside after 10 p.m. in winter or after midnight in summer. Today, Iceland has the lowest rate (比率) of teen drug abuse in Europe. In 1998, before Youth Iceland, 42% of 15and 16yearolds reported getting drunk. Last year, that number had dropped to 5%. Those smoking cigarettes (烟) dropped from 23% to 3%.At the same time, the percentage of those spending time with their parents on weekdays doubled, from 23% to 46%, and the percentage taking part in organized sports at least four days a week jumped from 24% to 42%. 【语篇解读】 本文是说明文。文章介绍了冰岛针对青少年滥用毒品问题采取的有效措施。 32.What can we infer about the problems mentioned in Paragraph 1?
