She had been the director of a school and a camp before she retired, but she needed to keep busy. She was even willing to work without pay. That was the reason why she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to work for was a business that helped other business find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired ‎ 13‎ people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things. Old people also had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems---mostly problems with communication.‎ ‎ Mrs. Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the years, form time to time, she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject: old people liked herself. She began to write a newspaper called “Sixty Plus”, which focused on getting old. She wrote about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood. ‎ ‎ Anna Douglas used her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understood the reasons why problems began. She understood old people and young people, too. For example, one of her readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs. Douglas suggested some ways for him to understand his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young people’s music and to watch the most popular TV shows.‎ ‎ “ It’s important to know something about your grandchildren’s word,” said Mrs. Douglas. “That means questioning and listening is not what old people do best.” She continued, “Say good things to them and about them. Never criticize your grandchildren or any other youngsters. Never tell them that they are wrong. Don’t give them your opinion. They have been taught that they should have respect for old people. The old should have respect for the young as well.”‎ ‎( )56. The main point of Mrs. Douglas advice is that _____.‎ ‎ A. old people should understand and respect the young ‎ B. old people have a lot to learn from the young ‎ C. poor hearing often causes old people to misunderstand the young ‎ D. the young should show respect for the old B ‎ Auction(拍卖)are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asked the crowd to gather in the auction room to bid for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer ‎ 13‎ of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer bangs a small hammer on a raised platform.‎ ‎ The ancient Romans probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin “auctic”, meaning “increase”. The Romans usually sold in this way the spoils taken in war, these sales were called “sub hasta”, meaning “under the spear(矛)”, a spear being stuck in the ground as a signal for a crowd to gather. In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries goods were often sold “by the candle”; a sort candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it was burning.‎ ‎ Practically all goods can be sold by auction. Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, cocoa, furs, fruit, vegetables and wines. Auctions sales are also usual for land and property, antique furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and works of art. The auction rooms at Christie’s and Sotheby’s in London and New York are world-famous.‎ ‎ An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by the buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together, called a “lot”, is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot One and continue the numerical order; he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room and then produce the form of a percentage of the price--- the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding.‎ ‎( ) 60. Plato described Atlantis as a culturally and scientifically advanced civilization that had existed long ago. The people of Atlantis had used their knowledge to enslave much of the world. Atlantis was defeated by Athens, but then all records of it were lost when a great flood destroyed both Athens and Atlantis.‎ ‎ Did Atlantis ever exist? Or was it just a story to show what happened to people when they became too powerful? If it did exist, where was it? In looking for evidence of Atlantis, people have tried to imagine what sort of remains such a civilization might have left. Certainly there would have been tools, probably made of metal.‎ ‎ In the late 1960s, a Greek professor, Spyridon Marinatos, discovered the remains of a Bronze Age city on the island‎ of ‎Thera. When digging the city’s streets, he made discoveries of buildings that were highly ceramics (陶瓷) used for eating and sorting food, and also colorful wall paintings. Together, all these discoveries indicate that the city was once a wealthy and culturally rich society. But, around the year 1500 BC, a great disaster struck: a devastating volcanic eruption tire the island apart, probably killing everyone who lived there. Those who were not killed right away were buried along with the entire city under five meters of ash. The volcano also sent tidal waves around the Mediterranean, destroying other cities. The people of Thera disappeared from the face of the Earth.‎ ‎ Was Thera the land‎ of ‎Atlantis? Some believe that Plato was actually relating the story of Thera, but was mistaken about its location and the date of its destruction.‎ ‎( ) 68. From the passage we know the people in Atlantis once _____.‎ ‎ A. led a very poor life B. disliked their king ‎ C. enjoyed their life D. won a war with ‎Athens ‎( )69. Plato thought the city of Atlantis was ruined by _____.‎ ‎ A. a war B. a fire C. an earthquake D. a flood 13‎ ‎( )70. What did a Greek professor, Spyridon Marinatos, think of Thera?‎ ‎ A. It was the land‎ of ‎Atlantis. B. It was destroyed by tidal waves.‎ ‎ C. It was a rich society in culture. D. A volcanic eruption made it disappear. ‎ ‎( )71. What does the passage mainly talk about?‎ ‎ A. Plato and Spyridon Marinatos. B. Thera and Atlantis.‎ ‎ C. Thera, a Bronze Age city. D. A search for Atlantis.‎ E ‎ The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added--- a communications blackout caused by solar storms.‎ ‎ After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2010, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London.‎ ‎ Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympics broadcasts from London.‎ ‎ “The Sun’s activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites,” said Professor Richard Harrison who worked on space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxford shire.‎ ‎ At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections (日冕物质抛射) occur in the Sun’s atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. “A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometers per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb communications,” Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.‎ ‎ Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available.‎ ‎ The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares (太阳耀斑) and explosions as they occur.‎ ‎ Professor Richard Hold, the lab’s director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth “If we have advance warning, we’ll be able to reduce the damage. What you don’t want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what’s caused the problem,” he said.‎ ‎( )72. What can be inferred about the solar activity described in the passage?‎ A. The most fatal matter from the coronal falls onto Earth.‎ B. The solar storm peak occurs in the middle of each cycle.‎ C. It takes several seconds for the charged matter to reach Earth.‎ 13‎ A. The number of sunspots declines after coronal mass ejections. ‎ ‎( ) 73. What does the underlined word “detect” probably mean?‎ ‎ A. destroy B. protect C. discover D. predict ‎( ) 74. According to the passage, NASA will launch a satellite to _____.‎ ‎ A. take images of the solar system B. provide early warning of thunderstorms ‎ C. keep track of solar activities D. improve the communications on Earth ‎ ‎( ) 75.
