But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe. Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露) to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风) within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物) were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure. The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainlymodest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health. 1. Audrey Zhang, a fifth-grader from Levittown, N.Y, is the winner of this year’s Doodle 4 Google contest, rising to the top of some 100, 000 entries on the theme of “draw one thing to make the world a better place.” Her piece, titled “Back to Mother Nature,” describes a detailed water-cleaning machine. Zhang worked with a team of artists at Google to animate(使……生动)her drawing. “To make the world a better place, I came up with a transformative water purifier, a machine used to remove dirty or harmful substances,” Google quoted Zhang as saying. “It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes and even oceans, then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and pure water. When humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.” She created a whole world around the device—one populated by humans, a whale in a top hat and dragons. Zhang, s piece is “so vivid and so rich and so full and so complete,’’ Google Doodle team leader Ryan Germick told the Washington Post. “Every leaf seemed to have life in it.” 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 3 Along with having her artwork featured on Google’s homepage, Zhang wins a $30,000 college scholarship. In addition, her school will receive a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant, and the company is donating $20,000 in her name to a charity devoted to bringing clean water to schools in Bangladesh. On Sunday, the night before her work was revealed on net, Zhang told Newsday she was excited by the big win, but said she wouldn’t be awake when her art first went online at midnight. “I have school-tomorrow, so I can’t stay up late,” she told the paper. 【小题 1】 What’s the passage mainly about? I’m not saying to say “no” to someone who really needs your help.I’m talking about turning down that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at. Think for a moment how you feel when you say “yes” to something that you really don’t want to do.If you’re like I once was,you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much.It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out.Whatever you’re saying to yourself,if you really wanted to go,you wouldn’t have all of these thoughts. So,why not just say “no” from the beginning?Maybe you feel like if you don’t show up at the meeting (by the way,it is not one you must attend),your boss isn’t going to like you or your coworkers won’t respect you.Maybe you feel as if your mom,dad or sisters won’t love you as much if you don’t do everything for them what they ask every occasion. If these people are your true friends, family members,or a good boss, they will like or love you the same no matter what.People treat you the way you teach them to,and if you’re someone who always says “yes”,then that’s what they’re expecting. You need to do what is right for you.Of course we do have real obligations in life to fulfill, but we do not have to do everything others want us to do. 【语篇解读】 生活中,我们有义务完成应该做的事情,但是不必出于太多的顾虑,凡事惟命是从,要学 会拒绝,学会说“不”。 1.Which of the following statements would the writer agree with? In the same way that people now download their favorite music onto their iPod,he said that viewers would soon be downloading most favorite programs onto their computers.“85% of all videos we watch are prerecorded,so you can set your system to download them all the time,” said Mr Cerf, who is now the vice president of Google, the world’s largest search engine.“You’re still going to need live television for certain things—like news, sporting events and emergencies—but increasingly it is going to be almost like the iPod.” Although television on demand has not yet become a mainstream activity in the UK,the BBC,ITV and Channel 4 have all spent vast sums of money on technology which enables viewers to watch their favorite shows on their computers. But some critics (批评人士),including some Internet service providers, have warned that the Internet will collapse with millions of people downloading programs at the same time.Over the 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 6 next four years,it is thought that the number of videos watched over the Internet will be four times as big as that.Broadband companies claim that the service will cause “traffic jams”, which will cost millions of pounds to get it to normal. The reason behind why the civilizations in and around modern-day Israel suddenly broke down more than 3,000 years ago has remained a mystery up until now. A new pollen study by Tel Aviv University researchers finally solved this Bronze Age mystery. Prof. Israel Finkelstein showed that owing to serious climate changes, the entire world of the Bronze Age crumbled in a short period of time. The discovery was made on the basis of a high-resolution analysis of pollen grains taken from sediments (沉淀物) beneath the Sea of Galilee and the western shore of the Dead Sea. Prof. Finkelstein received support from the European Research Council to conduct research aimed at reconstructing ancient Israel. Researchers of the part of the project that dealt with climate change extracted (提取) about 60 feet of samples of gray muddy sediment from the center of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. They had to drill through 1,000 feet of water and into 65 feet of the lake bed and were able to recover evidence dating over the past 9,000 years. “Pollen is the most enduring organic material in nature,” explained Dr. Dafna Langgut, a pollen researcher who carried out the actual work of sampling. “These grains tell us about the plants that grew near the lake in the past and therefore prove the climatic conditions in the region.” Researchers noted a sharp decrease in Mediterranean trees like oaks and pines in the Late Bronze Age. According to study experts, this could be because of repeated periods of drought. The droughts may have resulted in long famines, forcing people to migrate from north to south. 【小题 1】The underlined word “crumbled” in Paragraph 3 means _____.
