When I bake cookies, I immediately miss them the moment I have eaten the last one. Last summer when I left a summer camp, I didn't realize how great it really was until I got home. What happens, however, when that happens to one of your senses? A few months ago, I woke up deaf in one ear. I did not pay much attention to 20 it at first. It felt that I had water in my ear. However, I began to hear less and less out of that ear. I even had to ask people to talk into my other ear so I could hear them. I didn't realize how serious it was until later in the day. That evening, when I was sitting on my bed doing chemistry homework, I fell off my bed! When trying to get up, I was incredibly dizzy (头晕的). I went to see a doctor who told me that hearing loss was common. However, it was usually bilateral,or occurs in both ears. He said that my hearing should come back within a week. After about a week the dizziness eventually went away, but the hearing loss did not. The medicine helped and I gained some of my hearing back. After many hearing tests, it was determined that I had permanent hearing loss in that ear. School became harder for me because I couldn't hear my teachers. I was very depressed. Finally, I bought a hearing aid. With the hearing aid, my hearing is almost back to normal! It makes school and group conversations easier. My friends, teachers, and even complete strangers always ask me questions about hearing loss. I answer them patiently. I never get offended because I know that this is new to them. I am delighted I can teach them something new. What I have learned from this particular situation is that when things are desperate, there is always something good that can come out of it. My experience has given me an opportunity to teach people about something new to them and it has taught me about the value of hearing. 24.What do we know from the first paragraph? Cities tend to be short of trees, which provide shade, and they are covered with black pavement, which absorbs heat from the sun. Think of how it feels to wear a dark shirt versus a white shirt on a sunny day. A black shirt absorbs light, heating you up. But a white shirt reflects light, keeping you cool. The average temperature in a city of a million or more people can be more than 5 degrees F hotter than surrounding areas. That extra 5 degrees can turn a hot day from uncomfortable to deadly. As temperatures rise, cities will be an especially dangerous place to live during a heat wave. To protect public health, city officials are going to make the city cooler. As part of that effort, Los Angeles is coating its roads in CoolSeal, a gray paint that keeps streets and parking lots 10 degrees cooler than black 20 asphalt(沥青). It will help Angelinos save money during the summer, when air conditioning sends power bills soaring. And it will save lives by lowering temperatures and improving air quality. Hot weather worsens air pollution by turning car exhaust into smog, which can make life miserable for people with asthma(哮喘) and other breathing problems. Of course, L.A. will have to do more than paint over a few streets to cool off the city. Angelinos will also need to plant more trees and apply white paint to rooftops—at least those not already covered in solar panels. While L.A. is a pioneer of reflective streets, other cities, like New York, are already experimenting with reflective roofs or, like Melbourne, lowering the temperature by planting trees. L.A. is hardly alone in its effort to stay cool. “This is an urgent challenge, and it's much bigger than one person,”said Mayor Garcetti in a recent statement.“Climate change is a fact of life that people in Los Angeles and cities around the world live with every day.” 28.Which of the following contributes to the urban heat island effect? A.Planting more trees in the streets. B.Covering the streets with gray paint. C.Applying reflective paint to rooftops. D.Furnishing every house with air conditioners. 29.What should the city officials emphasize during hot summer? A.How to make the city cooler. B.Where to wear a white shirt. C.Why to coat the roads with black paint. D.When to cut off the electricity supply. 根据第二段最后一句“To protect public health, city officials are going to make the city cooler.” 30.What benefit can people gain from the use of CoolSeal? 20 A.Increasing the indoor activities. B.Promoting the sale of air conditioners. C.Making life easier and more comfortable. D.Reducing the number of cold days. 根据第三段,尤其是该段第二、三句“It will help Angelinos save money during the summer, when air conditioning sends power bills soaring. And it will save lives by lowering temperatures and improving air quality.” 31.What's the main idea of the passage? A.L.A.adopted many approaches to fight against the heat. B.L.A.calls on people to fight against global warming. C.More and more countries begin to plant trees in the streets. D.L.A.is painting its streets gray to keep the city cool. D Scientists have discovered thirteen kinds of vitamins. They say vitamins help to carry out chemical changes within cells. If we do not get enough of the vitamins we need in our food, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. Which foods should be eaten to keep us healthy? Let us look at some important vitamins. Vitamin A helps prevent skin and other tissues from becoming dry. People who do not get enough vitamin A cannot see well in darkness. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil and the yellow part of eggs. Vitamin B1 is also called thiamine. Thiamine changes starchy(含淀粉的) foods into energy. Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in beans and peas, nuts, and meat and fish. Vitamin B12 is needed so folic acid can do its work. Together, they help produce red blood cells. Folic acid has been shown to prevent physical problems in babies when taken by their mothers during pregnancy. Vitamin B12 is found naturally in foods like eggs, meat, fish and milk products. Vitamin B12 is found in green leafy 20 vegetables and other foods, like legumes and citrus fruits Vitamin C is needed for strong bones and teeth. The body stores little vitamin C.So we must get it every day in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked cabbage. Vitamin D prevents the children's bone disease rickets (佝偻病). Ultraviolet light from the sun changes a substance in the skin into vitamin D.Fish liver oil also contains vitamin D. Vitamin K is needed for healthy blood. Below are some ways to create better habits for yourself! Think. What's holding you back? Before you begin adjusting your habits, you should break down the reasons why you're hesitating(犹豫). Could the habits be inconvenient? Could they make you feel worried? These reasons don't mean you're sure to fail. 36 Once you know each reason specifically, you can develop a solution. 37 It doesn't have to be absolutely perfect, but you should be relatively stressfree when you begin a habit change. When you're stressed or upset about something, it'll cause disorder in your daily life and make it harder to keep up with your good habit. Pick just one. 38 Developing habits is like overloading yourself with coursework. The more you try to pile, the more likely you are to fail. In order to make a habit automatic, it takes a lot of conditioning. Start small. We often have dreams where we change our lives in one day. 39 As human beings, we get overmotivated (动机过强的) and pile tasks. Instead of doing that, build yourself up gradually. For example, if you want to exercise and start out at 30 minutes per workout, increase it to 35 minutes next time. Have a role model. Sometimes the actions of others are enough to convince us to leave the couch(长沙发). Think of a role model in your life—it can be a musician, athlete, educator, or anyone you admire. 40 They got off their couch and changed their life, so that means you can, too! A.Set your goals. B.Be sure your life is in order. 20 C.Chances are, they'll probably enjoy it too! D.These people are wellknown for a reason. E.You just need to deal with them one by one. F.Make sure you focus on picking up one habit. G.The bad news is that that's pretty much impossible. 36.解析:选E 本句的关键词是“them”,指的是上文提到的“These reasons”且“deal with them one by one”与后文的“know each reason specifically”相照应。 37.解析:选B 本句总结了本段的主要意思,即在改变习惯时要保证自己的生活井然有序,不慌张,可以从“stressfree, stressed or upset, cause disorder in your daily life”等判断出。 38. One small mistake changed Sonia's life. However, the others hold the opposite view because we have benefited a lot from space exploration, such as using satellites for communication and the weather forecast. Also, space research will enable us to find new resources to solve the problem of energy shortage on the earth. Personally, I am in favour of space exploration. We may solve the population problem by moving to other planets one day.
