Intelligence is a born ability while goodness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they're given after all. Choices can be hard. ‎ I got the idea to start Amazon many years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I'd been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn't work since most startups don't and I wasn't sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young ‎ 7‎ boy, I'd been a garage inventor. I'd always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion. ‎ I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me for a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn't already have a good job. ” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision not to try at all. ‎ After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I'm proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice. ‎ ‎1.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?‎ A.His dream of being an inventor. ‎ B.The support of his wife. ‎ C.The greatly increasing usage of the Internet. ‎ D.Millions of exciting titles. 根据第二段中的“I got the idea...the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I'd never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast”可知,因特网使用率的迅速增长激发了作者创建网上书店的想法。故选C。‎ ‎2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?‎ A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him. ‎ B.He would be very excited if he tried it out. ‎ C.He would be always having a doubt if he didn't try. ‎ D.The decision not to try the online bookstore would terrify him. 根据第三段的倒数第二句“I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. ”可知,作者不会后悔去尝试或者失败,但是有了想法却从未尝试过会让他不能释怀。haunt意为“萦绕于脑际,长期不断地缠扰(某人)”。故选A。‎ ‎3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?‎ A.Cleverness and Kindness 7‎ B.The Starting of Amazon C.Following My Passion D.We Are What We Choose 解析:选D 标题归纳题。根据第一段的最后一句“Choices can be hard. ”以及最后一段的末句“For all of us, in the end, we are our choice. ”可知,作者以自己的亲身经历强调了坚持自己的选择对人生的意义。‎ ‎4.We can know from the passage that________. ‎ A.the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author B.the author wanted someone else to try the idea C.the author might not regret if he failed the idea D.the author might go back to his boss if he failed 解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing. ”并结合文章主旨可知,作者即使失败也不后悔自己的选择。‎ B ‎(2019·全国卷Ⅲ)‎ Before the 1830s, most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in America, usually $8 to $10 a year. Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that. ‎ The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper”—a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street. ‎ This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible (but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer's office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny—usually two or three cents was charged—and some of the older wellknown papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny paper” caught the public's ‎ 7‎ fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny. ‎ This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not begin well. Some of the early ventures (企业) were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling. ‎ ‎5.Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?‎ A.Academic. B.Unattractive. ‎ C.Inexpensive. D.Confidential. 根据第一段中的第四句和第五句“In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. ”可知,当时的报纸并不吸引人。unattractive与文中的“dull and visually forbidding”意义相近。‎ ‎6.What did street sales mean to newspapers?‎ A.They would be priced higher. ‎ B.They would disappear from cities. ‎ C.They could have more readers. ‎ D.They could regain public trust. 而从“within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities”进一步印证了street sales(街头销售)的出现使得报纸有了更多的读者。‎ ‎7.Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at?‎ A.Local politicians. B.Common people. ‎ C.Young publishers. D.Rich businessmen. 根据第一段中的“...at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. ”和第三段中的“street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities”以及“But the phrase ‘penny paper’ caught the public's fancy”可知,新趋势下,报纸的目标读者是普通大众。‎ ‎8.What can we say about the birth of the penny paper?‎ A.It was a difficult process. ‎ 7‎ B.It was a temporary success. ‎ C.It was a robbery of the poor. ‎ D.It was a disaster for printers. Alain Robert, known as the French Spiderman, was afraid of heights as a child.
