However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road. The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea. It was used from about 200 B. C. to about A. D. 1300, when sea travel offered new routes (路线). It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return safe. The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle East and Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China. Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West. Apples traveled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft(嫁接)different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ll still be there for him when he needs you. Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’ t insist he tell you what’ s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ ll clam_up. Instead, let him attempt to solve (解 决) things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’re always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’ s privacy (隐私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations. Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family ’ s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation (节 制). C Have you ever noticed the colour of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in colour? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from the nearby fields. Components of Soil Soil is made up of a number of layers (层) , each having its own distinctive colour and texture. The upper layer is known as the litter. It acts like a blanket, limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus (腐殖质), which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colour. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water. Below the topsoil is the subsoil, a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in colour because of the lack of humus. Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock. Soil forms from the bottom up. Over time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost, and snow. It is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weathering. Plants begin to grow, and rotten materials enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Canada ,for example ,was formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared 12,000 years ago. Water Beneath the Soil Surface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes ,ponds, and rivers. Once in the soil or rock, it is called groundwater. Gravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(渗透). Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table. Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate. As water percolates downward, it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth. Soil pH Soil can be acidic, neutral, or basic. The pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rock from which it was formed, and by the nature of the plants that grow and rot in it. The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soil. By burning fossil fuels such as coal ,oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned, gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain. Acid soil increases the problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile. Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases. ( )63.The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant growth is called________. A. litter B. topsoil C. humus D. subsoil ( )64.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true? A. Soil forms from weathered rock on the earth surface. B. The deeper layer of soil is darker in colour than the surface soil. C. Air pollution is partially responsible for acid soil. D. Groundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth. ( )65.We can infer from the passage that the water table lies________. A. between the topsoil layer and the subsoil layer B. in the subsoil layer above bedrock C. between the subsoil layer and bedrock D. in the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil ( )66.The underlined word “dissolve” is used to express the idea that organic matter and minerals from soil are________. A. rushed away into the river B. cleaned and purified by water C. destroyed and carried away by water D. mixed with water and become part of it D It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in 1997, to support the Red Cross campaign for a total ban on landmines. Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. "I knew the statistics (数据),"she said." But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her." The Princess concluded with a simple message: "We must stop landmines". And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message. But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as "very ill-informed"and a"loose cannon (乱放炮的人). The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms: "This is a distraction (干扰) we do not need. All I'm trying to do is help." Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their Support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon became known that the Princess's trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government's policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government. To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkidnd, claimed that the Princess's views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was "working towards"a worldwide ban. The Defence Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was"a misunderstanding." For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and their problems. ( )67. You are not the only one who seems to try his best but ends up with a failure in exams. Quite a number of students feel the same way as you and they tend to lose their confidence and don’t want to study hard any longer. I’m sure you know that it’s unwise to do so because you might be left far behind. I was once in the same situation as yours. Failure is the mother of success. In face of failure, what we need to do is to calm down and reflect our learning methods and make some possible changes or to ask the teachers for advice. Anyway, Rome is not built in a day. Only by sticking to studying persistently can we make progress step by step till success. I truly hope I can be of some help to you. Yours ever, Li Ming 听力材料 (Text 1) M: Hello, Anne. This is Larry at the office. Is Fred at home? W: No, Larry. He's in class now. He'll be home for lunch, though. (Text 2) M: What do you think of the opera? W: It's very good. The actors and actresses are all very good. Don't you think so? M: Yes. The acting is excellent and so is the music. W: Yes. I like it very much. (Text 3) W: My father has retired recently. He just can't bear staying at home. M: I am most upset to hear it. He can do something. Many old people are living a rich and full life. (Text 4) W: Bob, why are you looking so depressed? M: Mum, I'm not a good boy. I broke father's glass just now. W: Oh, son. Would it be a good idea to tell him the truth? M: Yeah, but I'm afraid he'll scold me. (Text 5) W: I didn't think much of that performance. M: No. It wasn't too hot. What a pity, they're a good group after all. W: I couldn't hear the lead singer at all. M: Me neither. The guitars and drums were too bad. (Text 6) M: What's the matter, Anne? Do you have a problem? W: Yes, I have a chance to get another job and I don't know what to do. M: If it's a better job than your present one, take it. That's my advice. W: It isn't as easy as that. I like the job I have now very much. The people in my office are very nice and my work is very interesting. M: What about the pay? Will you get more money? W: Yes, the pay is better. If I accept the job, I'll get more money right away. M: What about the opera? W: No, never. I don't really like the opera. It is a bit too heavy for me. M: A pop concert? W: Yes. I saw Madonna once. She was fantastic—she is a really great dancer. During the 2007 Qingdao International Sailing Games, around 5,000 people came out to watch the competition every day along the seawall. M: Newspapers say the design received high praise from the International Olympic Committee. The venue will be used for the 2008 Olympic Games. W:Fortunately, I have been there already. It's a pity you're not going to see it. M:Although I know my chances of getting an Olympic sailing ticket are slim, I'll keep trying anyway. Otherwise, I'm sure you'll nag me to death telling me about your experience there. (Text 9) M: Oh, I'm exhausted. W:Why are you so tired? What did you do today? M:There were so many things to do. W:Did you do all those things all yourself? M:Oh, yes. I had to. I had to check the new products. I had to hold the meeting with the department managers. I had to listen to their reports and give my comments. That's my job, you know. W:Well, it sounds like you really had to do all those things. But you shouldn't work too hard. An examiner who witnessed the crash said the woman panicked while trying to park the car and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.查看更多
