So was Alice. That's where the similarities ended. I was tall and she - 27 - was small. My thick, black hair had been recently cut short. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was awkward and shy. She wasn't. I couldn't stand her. I considered her my enemy. She liked me. She wanted to be friends. One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to answer any other way. No one had invited me over to play. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school. I got very surprised when she led me into an apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she'd outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in closet, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That's when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and we both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon. Our jaws ached from smiling so much. She showed me her wardrobe, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it used her as a model sometimes for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange. Alice had the whole neighborhood charmed. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's houses, and spent every free moment together. My dark hair grew out and I learned to love being tall. Alice my first real friend since childhood, taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: that your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend. 4. What made the similarities end? A. Leaving the author's old school. B. Being admitted to their new classes. C. Their differences in appearance and personalities. D. Their different demands of friendship and fashion. 5. What did the author think of the Barbies? A. Alice was too mature for them. B. Alice must have made them by herself. C. They should have been kept well. D. They brought her back to her childhood. - 27 - 6. We can infer from the passage that Alice ________. A. helped the author see her own strengths B. was good with the people around her C. helped to bring out the best in the author D. inspired the authors love for fashion 7. Which of the following best describes Alice as a friend? A. Humorous. B. Ambitious. C. Caring. D. Friendly. 4. C 5. A 6. B 7. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea. Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea. In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers. This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants. Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design-his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get - 27 - a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding. 8. What has happened during the past five years? A. Fabric has become much stronger. B. Plastic pollution has been less serious. C. Many plastic bottles have been reused. D. Microfibers have been greatly improved. 9. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes? A. It is adding microfibers to the clothes. B. It is worsening environmental problems. C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer. D. It is doing great damage to washing machines. 10. What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project? A. It has achieved great success. B. It hasn’t got anything done. C. It is known to very few people. D. It is facing some difficulties. 11. What’s the best title for the text? A. It’s important to learn to recycle B. It’s never easy to solve pollution problems C. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution? D. Are human beings moving forward or backward? C 9. B 10. D 11. 由第一段“During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. ”可知,在过去的五年里,很多制衣公司,企业和环境组织已经开始把塑料转换成纤维来解决环境污染问题。结合上文,企业是用可回收塑料瓶转换成纤维。由此,在这五年会有很多塑料瓶被再次利用,结合选项,故选C。 【9题详解】 - 27 - 细节理解题。由第三段“He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.” Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. 由最后一段“When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design-his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. ”可知,在Browne要求世界知名制衣公司支持把对人类和环境有危害的衣服撤出市场的研究项目时,Browne并没有得到一个令人满意的答案。由此可推知,他的研究项目Benign by Design遇到了难题,结合选项,故选D。 【11题详解】 标题判断题。由第一段“ During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution.”( 在过去的五年里,大量的服装公司、企业和环保组织已经开始将塑料变成织物来处理塑料污染)和第一段“Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.”( 研究显示,微纤维是海洋塑料的最大来源。) 故C项(Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution?) C。 D One in five women and one in eight men are becoming more tired and less productive, according to a new Australian study on mobile phone use. Led by the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, researchers surveyed 709 mobile phone users across the country aged 18 to 83 and asked them a series of questions based on a similar study 13 years ago. Identifying a phenomenon "technoference (科技干扰)", researchers discovered a significant increase in people blaming their devices for losing sleep, becoming less productive and even getting more aches and pains". According to the study's lead author Dr Oscar, the issue is so bad that 24 percent of women and 15 percent of men are now considered to be " problematic mobile phone users". "When we talk about - 27 - technoference, we're referring to the everyday intrusions (侵入)and interruptions that people experience due to mobile phones and their usage," he said. "Our survey found technoference had increased among men and women. For example, self-reports relating to the loss of sleep and productivity showed that these negative outcomes had significantly increased during the last 13 years. This finding suggests that mobile phones are potentially increasingly affecting aspects of daytime functioning due to lack of sleep. " Compared to a 2005 study, "technoference" issues for 18 to 24-year-old experienced a surprising 40. 9 percent rise, while those aged 25 to 29 also recorded a dramatic increase of 23. 5 percent. Oscar said that with the number of smartphone users around the world expected to surpass 2. 5 billion before the end of this year, the problem of "technoference" could get even worse. "The speed and depth of smartphone take-up makes our population particularly vulnerable to some of the negative consequences of high mobile phone use." he said. "Rapid technological innovations have led to dramatic changes in today's mobile phone technology, which can improve the quality of life for phone users but also result in some negative outcomes. " 12. How are people affected by technoference according to the text? A. It makes people addicted to communicating online. B. It pushes people to work at a fast pace. C. It causes people to sleep less at night. D. It brings negative outcomes to people of all ages. 13. Which group are most influenced by smartphones? A. Young women. B. Young man C. Children. D.
