A Away with words The telegraph, an online news service, has teamed up with Saga, which provides products and services only for the over 50s, to hold a new competition to find the best travel writer. Three lucky winners will win a master class with two top Telegraph travel writers before travelling the world with Saga on one of three holidays of great comfort and pleasure. To enter, all you need to do is tell us something mysterious and wonderful about the world of travel—a favorite memory, a humorous tale, an unforgettable occasion or a sight worth writing about. What we are looking for You must be able to read not only those signs that help you find your way around but the ones that tell you how the locals tick. You must, in the words of Paul Theroux, an American travel writer, “descibe exactly what you see and give it life with your imgaination”. In this competition, you can do that in anything from 150 words to 500, but they should be your words, and fresh ones. We do expect you not to hide the truth or the facts about your experience. Beyond that, you can make the most of the freedom travel writing gives you. You’ll be editor as well as writer, so ensure those eyes are equally fresh when you check and recheck what you’ve written. We will make allowances for the occasional mistake, such as you have “fell” into a river. But we won’t put up with mistakes every few lines. Terms & conditions Competitors must be aged 50 years or older. The judging process is divided into two stages: entries will be hosted on the website for one month. The top 20 articles will then be selected by public vote. The top three winners will be chosen by three judges. The closing date for entries is August 15. 11 1.What does the prize for winners include? A. a chance to learn from excellent writers. B. the publication of their works. C. three wonderful holidays. You consider this question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand. It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland. Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin, about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along. There’s an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It’s what this place offers, and it’s free of charge. The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea. It’s early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here. There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue sea. There’s no street noise. The only sounds are the murmurs of nature. For now you just count your blessings (福祉), listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾). You don’t have to worry about being late for work. You don’t have to do anything. The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线), slowly narrowing to nothingness only to re-emerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath you. Sand to your left and sand to your right; it’s unbroken, endless. No start, no end, just sand, sun, and peace. Step off it, and you re-enter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry. Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you’re on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world. “How could it take me so long to find it?” you wonder. 1. When the author first went to Huaplee Beach, ______. A. he found it unworthwhile B. he failed to sort himself out C. he became sensitive to smell D. he had difficulty in finding it 2. What is special about the food service at Huaplee Beach? A. No menu. B. Free food. C. Self service. D. Quick delivery. 3. In the author’s opinion, a tourist can enjoy Huaplee Beach most when he ______. 11 A. sits in a beach chair B. forgets his daily routine C. plans a detailed schedule D. draws pictures in the sand 4. What does the author imply by his question at the end of the passage? A. He shouldn’t have counted his blessings. B. He should have understood the wonder of nature. C. He shouldn’t have spent so much time on the trip. D. He should have come to the place earlier. It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and nonjoggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die.The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as nonjoggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉).Over time, this can cause serious injuries. Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy.Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.” The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as t’ai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and longdistance running and cycling.According to Jacob Louis Marott, another 11 researcher involved in the study, “You don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much.” 1.The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “________”. A.hard B.regular C.practical D.flexible 2. The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to________. A.suggest giving up jogging B.show risks of doing sports C.provide supportive evidence D.introduce the research process 3.According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful? A.It may injure the heart and arteries. B.It can make the body tired out. C.It will bring much pressure. D.It consumes too much energy. 4.What can be inferred from the text? A.No exercise at all is the best choice. B.More exercise means a healthier life. C.Marathon runners are least likely to die. D.Proper exercise contributes to good health. 11 1.解析:选A。 regular“定时的”;practical“实用的”;flexible“灵活的”。 2. 3.解析:选A。 根据第二段的最后两句“The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes... serious injuries.” E It is good to get in touch with your inner child from time to time, and obviously some people are willing to pay big money for the chance to do so in a proper environment.A Brooklynbased adult preschool is charging customers between $333 and $999 for the chance to act like a kid again.
