He was raised in Missouri where he worked in his father's store while attending school. This was his first retailing(零售业)experience and he really enjoyed it. After graduation,he began his own career as a retail merchant. He soon opened his first WalMart store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. WalMart specialized in name brands at low prices and Sam Walton was surprised at the success. Soon a chain of WalMart stores sprang up across rural America. Walton's management style was popular with employees and he fuunded some of the basic concepts of management that are still in use today. After taking the company public in 1970, Walton introduced his“profit sharing plan”. The profit sharing plan was a plan for WalMart employees to improve their income dependent on the profits of the store. Sam Walton believed that“individuals don't win, while teams do”. Employees at WalMart stores were offered stock options(认股选择权)and store discounts. These benefits are commonplace today, but Walton was among the first to implement(实施)them. Walton believed that a happy employee meant happy customers and more sales. He also believed that by giving employees a part of the company and making their success dependent on the company's success, they would care about the company. By the 1980s,WalMart had sales of over one billion dollars and over three hundred stores across North America. WalMart's unique decentralized(分散的)distribution system, also Wahon's idea, created the edge needed to further encourage growth in the 1980s during growing complaints that the“superstore”was stopping smaller and traditional stores from developing.By 1991, WalMart was the largest US retailer with 1,700 stores. Walton remained active in managing the company, as president and CEO until 1988 and chairman until his death. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom shortly before his death. 21.Sam Walton first made a hit in retailing when________. The study suggests our relatives were mostly planteaters before they developed a taste for meaty flesh. The study focused on Australopitheeus bahrelghazali(羚羊河南方古猿), which had a set of teeth. You can see a reconstruction of this human relative here. “We found evidence suggesting that early hominids(类人动物), in central Africa at least, ate a diet mainly consisting of tropical grasses and sedges,”coauthor Julia LeeThorp, a University of Oxford archaeologist, said in a press release. She continued,“No African great apes, including chimpanzees, eat this type of food despite the fact that it grows in abundance in tropical and subtropical regions. The only notable exception is the baboon(狒狒)which still searches for these types of plants today. We were surprised to discover that early hominids appear to have consumed more than even the baboons.” She and her colleagues made the determination after studying the fossilized teeth of three Australopithecus bahrelghazali individuals—the first early human relatives found at two sites in Chad. The researchers analyzed the carbon isotope ratios in the teeth and found the feature of a diet rich in foods derived from C4 plants. This indicates our longgone relatives experienced a shift in their diet relatively early, at least in central Africa. These individuals survived in open landscapes with few trees, so apparently they could exploit not only dense woodland areas but also other environments. Although the area where Australopithecus bahrelghazali lived is now dry and hyperarid, back in the day it featured a network of shallow lakes with nearby floodplains and wooded grasslands. While this ancestor of ours clearly had big, impressive teeth, they would not have been able to eat leaves day after day. The individuals also lacked cowlike guts to break down and digest such food, so the researchers suspect the early hominids probably relied more on the roots and bulbs at the base of the plants. Given the carbon isotope data, there is a very little chance that early hominids ate animals that, in turn, ate the tropical grasses. 28.Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Early Human Ancestors Ate Tropical Grasses and Sedges. B. Africans Prefer to Live on Tropical Grasses. C. Australopithecus Bahrelghazali Was Discovered in Africa. D. Baboons May Be Ancestors of Humans. A 29.How did Julia LeeThorp get her research result? A. By doing many experiments with the baboons. B. By analyzing the teeth of some local Africans. C. By studying the fossilized teeth of Australopithecus bahrelghazali. D. By growing plants rich in carbon isotope. C 30.The underlined word“dense”in Paragraph 6 probably means“________”. A. deserted B. attractive C. thick D. polluted C 31.Which of the following is NOT true? A. The early hominids once relied on the plants. B. Australopithecus bahrelghazali lived in a place with many tropical grasses. C. The early hominids changed their eating habits. D. Australopithecus bahrelghazali enjoyed living in a dry place. (2015·石家庄高中毕业班质量检测) Can't get out of the office?
