John was good with tools and soon became an inventor. He first invented a model of a sawmill. Later, he invented an alarm clock that would cause the sleeping person to be tipped out of bed when the timer sounded. Muir left home at an early age. He took a 1,000-mile walk south to the Gulf of Mexico in 1867 and 1868. Then he sailed for San Francisco. The city was too noisy and crowded for Muir, so he headed inland for the Sierra Nevadas. When Muir discovered the Yosemite Valley in the Sierra Nevadas, it was as if he had come home. He loved the mountains, the wildlife, and the trees. He climbed the mountains and even climbed trees during thunderstorms in order to get closer to the wind. He put forth the theory in the late 1860s that the Yosemite Valley had been formed through the action of glaciers (冰川). People ridiculed him. Not until 1930 was Muir’s theory proven correct. Muir began to write articles about the Yosemite Valley to tell readers about its beauty. His writing also warned people that Yosemite was in danger from timber mining and sheep ranching interests. In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became president of the United States. He was interested in conservation. Muir took the president through Yosemite, and Roosevelt helped get laws passed to create Yosemite National Park in 1906. Although Muir won many conservation battles, he lost a major one. He fought to save the Hetch Hetchy Valley, which people wanted to dam in order to provide water for San Francisco. In late 1913, a bill was signed to dam the valley. Muir died in 1914. Some people say losing the fight to protect the valley killed Muir. 25. When did Muir invent a unique form of alarm clock? A. While the family still lived in Scotland. B. It is a software virus that blocks your computer system until you pay money. The viruses have scary names, like Crypto locker or Crypto wall. The first ransom ware viruses appeared in 2013 but they have become more dangerous recently. The viruses can sweep across the internet in a short period of time and infect millions of computers overnight. Ransom ware viruses spread via links, unauthorized downloads as well as email attachments. They hit your computer without you knowing it. In many cases the virus stops your hard drive from working or encrypts documents and photos, which then become useless. Hackers demand money, ranging from a few to a thousand dollars, for letting you control your computer again. Not only PCs are reported to be affected by ransom ware, tablets and mobile phones have also caught the virus. Virus developers are always looking for new ways to make money. Last year ransom ware attacks went up by 100%. Currently, there are about 30, 000 infections around the world every day. Although anti-virus firms are working hard to produce patches to protect such attacks, they are not always fast enough to provide security from every virus. However, there are some things you can do to protect yourself. Do not download suspicious files from the internet and be careful when you open email attachments. Finally, allow your operating system to update regularly and make sure your anti-virus databases are also up-to-date. 29. What is Ransom ware like? A. Spreading fast, it is very destructive. B. Lacking the right to vote and absent from the seats of power, women were not considered an important force in history. During these centuries, women remained invisible in history books. Throughout the nineteenth century, this lack of visibility continued, despite the efforts of female authors writing about women. These writers, like most of their male counterparts, were amateur (业余的) historians. Their writings were celebratory in nature, and they were uncritical in their selection and use of sources. During the nineteenth century, however, certain feminists showed a keen sense of history by keeping records of activities in which women were engaged. National, regional, and local women’s organizations compiled accounts of their doings. Personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, and souvenirs were saved and stored. These sources form the core of the two greatest collections of women’s history in the United States—one at the Elizabeth and Arthur Schlesinger Library at Radeliffe College, and the other the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College. Such sources have provided valuable materials for later generations of historians. Despite the gathering of more information about ordinary women during the nineteenth century, most of the writing about women adjusted to the “great women” theory of history, just as much of mainstream American history concentrated on “great men”. To demonstrate that women were making significant contributions to American life, female authors singled out women leaders and wrote biographies, or else important women produced their autobiographies. Most of these leaders were involved in public life as reformers, activists working for women’s right to vote, or authors, and were not representative at all of the great mass of ordinary women. The lives of ordinary people continued, generally, to be untold in the American histories being published. 32. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The role of literature in early American histories. B. The place of American women in written histories. C. The keen sense of history shown by American women. D. The “great women” approach to history used by American historians. 33. The word “they” in Paragraph 2 refers to . A. efforts B. sources C. writings D. authors 34. In the second paragraph, what weakness in nineteenth-century histories does the author point out? A. They put too much emphasis on daily activities. B. They left out discussion of the influence on money or politics. C. The sources of the information they were based on were not necessarily accurate. D. They were printed on poor quality paper. 35. What use was made of the nineteenth-century women’s history materials in the Schlesinger Library and the Sophia Smith Collection? A. They were combined and published in a multivolume encyclopedia (多卷百科全书) about women. B. They formed the basis of college courses in the nineteenth-century. C. They provided valuable information for twentieth-century historical researchers. D. They were shared among women’s colleges throughout the United States. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Here’s some information to help you avoid suffering too much Indian culture shock when you arrive. • Cows in India Similar to how some people wonder if kangaroos can be found in cities in Australia, they also wonder if cows really roam (漫步) the streets in India.
