These drivers know too well how bad the traffic can be. “There're too many cars, and you can't move around a lot.” Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What's unique is that we use a lot of data that's currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what's going to happen in front of you when you leave home.” Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahahi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities. “I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.” Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple. 1.Drivers in Los Angeles were mentioned in order to ________. A.show care for them B.introduce their life C.solve traffic problems D.raise the topic 答案:D 推理判断题。 2.What is unique about ClearPath? A.It can use a lot of information all over the world. B.It can ensure that you will never be late for work. C.It helps drivers see clearly what happens on the road. D.It helps drivers know the road conditions ahead of time. 根据第四段“What's unique is that we use a lot of data that's currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what's going to happen in front of you when you leave home.” 3.The underlined word “hits” in the fifth paragraph probably means ________. A.have an accident B.get to C.turn left or right D.collect traffic data 答案:B 词义猜测题。 由此推断,before the driver hits the road意为“在司机上路之前”,hit意为“到达”。故选B项。 4.What's Professor Shahabi's attitude toward his invention? A.Disappointed. B.Proud. C.Optimistic. D.Worried. B Drunken driving—sometimes called America's socially accepted form of murder—has become a national epidemic (传染病). Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250, 000 over the past decade. A drunken driver is usually defined as one with a 0.10 blood content or roughly three beers, glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours. Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American man image and judges were tolerant (宽容的) in most courts, but the drunken slaughter (残杀) has recently caused so many well publicized tragedies, especially involving young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant. Twenty states have raised the legal drinking to 21, reversing a trend in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18 to 20yearold drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21. Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist (抵抗) pressure to drink. Tough new laws have led to increased arrests and tests and, in many areas already, to a marked decline in fatalities (灾祸). Some states are also penalizing (处罚) bars for serving customers too many drinks. A tavern in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously intosxicated (喝醉的)” and later drove off the road, killing a nineyearold boy. As the fatalities continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years of national prohibition (禁止) of alcohol that began in 1919, what President Hover called the “noble experiment”. They forget that legal prohibition didn't stop drinking, but encouraged political corruption (腐败) and organized crime. As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no easy solution. 5.Drunken driving has become a major problem in America because ________. A.most Americans are heavy drinkers B.Americans are now less shocked by road accidents C.accidents attract too much publicity D.drinking is a socially accepted habit in America 答案:D 主旨大意题。文章开头作者即指出,酒后驾驶已经成了美国一种“尚可忍受的谋杀”,又在第二段中说,“Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American man image....” D。 6.Statistics issued in New Jersey suggested that ________. A.many drivers have not reached the legal driving age B.young drivers were often bad drivers C.more people took no drinking in the 1960s D.the legal drinking age should be raised 答案:D 细节理解题。 D。 7.Laws recently introduced in some states have ________. A.reduced the number of convictions B.resulted in fewer serious accidents C.prevented bars from serving drunken customers D.specified the amount drivers can drink 答案:B 细节理解题。文章第五段开头说,“Tough new laws have led to increased arrests and tests and, in many areas already, to a marked decline in fatalities.” B。 8.The problem of drunken driving is difficult to solve because ________. A.alcohol is easily accessible B.drinking is linked to organized crime C.legal prohibiting has already failed D.legislation alone is not sufficient 答案:C 细节理解题。 The benefits of keeping a journal If you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your life.I have been keeping journals for years.Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has been a habit for me.__1__ Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal.
