(建议用时:30分钟) 阅读理解 A (2019·武汉部分学校新高三调研测试)KIPP schools work closely with families to create a welcoming school environment where students can succeed. Through phone calls, emails, home visits, and parent-teacher conferences, KIPP schools regularly communicate with families about their child’s academic development to help students from educationally underserved communities develop the knowledge, skills, character, and habits needed to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond. Enroll(注册) at a KIPP school KIPP schools are tuition-free, public schools open to all students. To enroll your child in a KIPP school, please contact the school in your community directly by phone or email. A safe and structured environment Students need physical and emotional safety in order to take risks and learn from their successes and their mistakes. Our schools provide an environment with minimal distractions(使人分心的事) and more time for academic studies, so our students love school and maximize their learning. A three-way partnership By choosing KIPP, students, parents, and teachers make a commitment to excellence. All three parties are in it together. They sign an agreement called the “Commitment to Excellence”, which ensures that each will do whatever it takes to help the student learn. All KIPP schools share a common approach and yet every KIPP school is unique. Tour a school to better understand the culture, schedule, and curriculum. 【解题导语】 本文是一篇应用文,主要介绍了美国KIPP学校,包括家校互通的方式,注册方法以及安全、有条理的教学环境等。 1.Who are allowed to be admitted to KIPP schools? And then came the arguments—not from teachers, but from parents. Some said they would transfer their children to another school. Some said they were finding online sources of homework for their children. They were not convinced of the explanation from Principal Jane Hsu about the negative effects of homework on young children, including lack of time for other activities and family time, and loss of interest in learning. Hsu suggested children should spend their time on activities that had been found to be good for their academic, social and emotional development. As a supporter of Hsu’s approach, I wonder how many of the parental arguments occur not because of what children will miss out on, but because parents themselves no longer feel confident about their ability to help their children develop without highly structured activities to guide them. I’m reminded of a meeting at the school my younger daughter was about to start when she was 6. The head of the school met with parents to say that she was also considering doing away with homework. One mom objected because homework was her “special time” each day with her child when they could sit down together to go through the work. The head of the school appeared surprised at this. She gently suggested that the mother should read to her child, or that they should cook dinner together. It’s been sad already to see that kids, between their structured soccer practices and their homework, have very little time to play. But it’s even sadder to see the parental nervousness about what might happen to a thirdgrader who has more time to create, think, read, interact with others, or imagine. What might happen, I believe, must be more happiness, more energy and better physical fitness. 【解题导语】 曼哈顿的一位校长通知家长她的学校将不再给学生布置家庭作业,此举在家长中引发了激烈的讨论。作者本人对这位校长的方法表示支持,并持乐观的态度。 4.From the passage, we know .
