Neighbors Day Aotearoa(NDA) on the 23-24 March will give all Kiwis a great opportunity to connect with others in their immediate neighborhood. This year organizers predict it will be bigger than ever. Over the weekend, thousands of neighbors all around the country will gather together to get to know each other, and make connections and support systems that will continue to enrich their lives long after the weekend has ended. A shining example of neighborly spirit inspired by NDA is Victoria Dawson-Wheeler,a 32 year-old from Arch Hill,Auckland, won the Neighbours Day Aotearoa story competition last year. Victoria organized a big breakfast for her entire neighborhood, asking local businesses to participate by donating enough coffee, muffins, and bacon for everyone who came along. She also created a gift-swap exercise called “Love thy neighbor” where each participant interacted with at least two other households in the neighborhood. It was a huge success.“I was blown away by the generosity and thoughtfulness of everyone involved,” she says.“It’s so hard to meet people.Nobody wants to be the first to say ‘hi’,but once you’re past that stage it’s great!” Since Neighbors Day,Arch Hill has become known for its community-mindedness.When babies are born, people drop by with food and clothes for the new parents. When a neighbor is in trouble, people are now much more likely to lend a hand. “These small but important changes in neighborhoods are what Neighbors Day Aotearoa is all about.More and more of this happening right around the country will mean neighborliness is increasing in every community. We’re already starting to see this movement grow,” says John McCarthy, one of the organizers. The Neighbors Day website features NDA success stories to help inspire New Zealanders to participate in Neighbors Day.Participants who sign up through the website will be sent a resource pack with lots of great ideas to organize an NDA celebration that works for their neighborhood. 1.What do we learn about NDA from the text? A.It will be held in Arch Hill this year. B.It is aimed at building neighborly spirit. C.It is mainly organized by Victoria Dawson-Wheeler. D.It gives people a chance to share their success stories. 2.The underlined word “that stage” probably refers to the stage when . A.Victoria was discouraged by some locals B.there is a distance between people’s hearts C.Victoria began to create “Love thy neighbor” D.more people get involved in neighborly activities 答案B 解析词义猜测题。 本句中的“It’s so hard to meet people.Nobody wants to be the first to say ‘hi’”的意思是:与他人相见很难,而且没有人愿意首先说‘你好’。 3.Which of the following is a change taking place in Arch Hill? A.Most communities in the area take part in NDA. B.Local people in difficulty like to ask NDA for help. C.The relationships among local people become closer. D.More people donate food and clothes to poor children. 4.How does McCarthy feel about the latest development of NDA? A.Shocked. B.Disappointed. C.Worried. D.Pleased. 由倒数第二段中的“More and more of...this movement grow”可知,McCarthy已经看到了邻居日运动得到了发展,那么他应该对此感到很高兴。 六、语篇填空 (语言能力 学习能力) I was on my way to the Taiyetos Mountains. The sun was setting when my car 1 (break) down near a remote and poor village.Because of the misfortune,I was wondering where I was going to spend the night when I realized that the villagers who had gathered around me were arguing as to 2 (whom) should have the honour of receiving me 3 a guest in their house. Finally,I accepted the offer of an old woman who lived alone in a little house. While she was getting me 4 (settle) into a tiny but clean room, the head of the village was tying up his horse to my car to pull it to 5 small town some 20 kilometres away 6 there was a garage.
