Teachers at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, did just that this September, when they pulled individual students out of classes to tell them just how much they appreciated them. The students' reactions, which were captured (捕捉) on video and shared on YouTube, a now viral video website, ranged from shy thanks to hugs and tears. “I have been challenged to find a student who makes me want to come to school every day,” said one teacher in the video, “and that's you.” Jamie McSparin, a teacher in charge of the school's academy program for atrisk sophomores (二年级学生) and juniors, posed the challenge, writes ABC News. “Initially when we pulled the kids out, they all thought they were in trouble,” McSparin told ABC News. “Any teacherstudent interaction always seems to be negative (消极的), and that was something that bothered me too. No matter if they're good kids or troublemakers or anything, they always thought they were in trouble,” she said. McSparin said she got the idea for the project after attending a professional development workshop this summer called “the power of positivity”. “I like the idea of letting students know they are appreciated, because we do appreciate them. I just don't think we say it enough,” she told local news outlet WDAFTV. It's safe to say the challenge was effective. “I feel special,” said one of the boys in the video. “You should,” said his teacher. “You are special.” 4.What does the underlined word “posed” in Paragraph 5 mean? While the event may start with some calculations, it is more than likely to conclude with a slice or two of delicious pie. The holiday is held every March 14, because “π” is widely recognized as 3.14. The tradition of honoring “π” began at San Francisco's Exploratorium museum. On March 14, 1988, physicist Larry Shaw convinced his colleagues to mark the day by marching around one of the museum's circular spaces and consuming fruit pies. The celebration was made official in 2009 when the U. S. House of Representatives set aside March 14 as Pi Day. Today, Pi Day is observed in many creative ways. Students at the California Institute of Technology in Los Angeles host a pieeating event, which begins at 1:59 a. m. and features 26 pies, each of five different flavors. Though that might seem random, the date (3.14), time (159), number of pies (26), and number of varieties (5) recreate the first nine digits of “π”:3.14159265! Students applying for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge eagerly wait for the day every year to find out if they have been accepted. However, instead of sending out the offers at 3:14 p. m., the institution waits till 6:28 p. m. 6.28 is referred to as “tau”, which is “π” multiplied by 2. The number is believed to be much more reliable than “π” by some experts and even has its own celebration on June 28. Since 2017, MIT has also used Pi Day as a fundraiser to support its students, departments and programs. This day is also Albert Einstein's birthday, so the town of Princeton, New Jersey, where Einstein lived until his death in 1955, celebrates the occasion with multiday festivities that end on March 14. Visitors can participate in concerts, shows, as well as pieeating, pirecitation, and Einsteinlookalike contests. 8.Where was Pi Day originally celebrated? They are ranging from geometric patterns to drawings of different animals and stylized humanlike forms. The ancient lines can only be truly taken in from high in the air, leaving generations puzzled as to how these precise works could have been completed long before the documented invention of human flight. The Lines were first spotted when commercial airlines began flying across the Peruvian Desert in the 1920's. Who built them and what was their purpose? Are they roads, star pointers, maybe even a gigantic map? If the people who lived there 2,000 years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures? Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle. The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding groups of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, the United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological (考古学的) group. The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode (侵蚀) it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lightercolored subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal. 12.What do we know about the Nazca Lines? A.They were built as a big map. B.They were formed by nature. C.They are ancient lines in caves. D.They are huge markings in a desert. 根据第一段中的“The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs ... stylized humanlike forms”可知,纳斯卡线条是沙漠里的巨型图案。 13.How many factors make the Nazca Lines the most impressive? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. 根据第三段中的“But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological (考古学的) group”可知,是四个因素使得纳斯卡线条给人们留下最深刻的印象。 14.Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved? A.Because of their great artistic value. B.Because of the existence of soft soil. C.Because of the climate and geography. D.Because of the wind at ground level. 根据第四段中的“due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand ... stay drawn”可知,纳斯卡地区地表平坦,气候干燥,没有雨水和风的侵蚀,这使得纳斯卡线条得以良好保存。 15.What does the underlined word “eternal” probably mean? A.Nonstop. B.Everlasting. C.Realworld. D.Highend. Ⅱ.阅读七选五 (2019·陕西质检二)Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”.
