All his friends were going to come over that evening. His little sister Samantha had made him the brightest, friendship-birthday bracelet. He had heard his dad whispering to his mom the day before about “picking up the little puppy”, and had a feeling that one of his presents might be a little dog that he had been wishing for ever since he was five. So what was wrong? Oscar was sad because there was one very, very, hugely important person who was missing today-his beloved Grandma Rose. Last year she fell ill and then one day she just wasn’t there. “Grandma’s gone, but she still loves you very much,” mom explained. “I miss Grandma Rose,” Oscar said. “Well, Grandma has a present for you!” A present from Grandma? How? Mom pressed play on the CD player, and Oscar heard his grandmother’s voice! “My dear Oscar,” the recording began. “I’m sorry I can’t be there with you today to celebrate such an exciting day, but I’m with you in spirit. I’m with you all the time. As for your birthday present, I’d like to tell you about the day you were born, which was the very first day I met you. That was exactly eight years ago. What a tiny little thing you were back then! The doctor hardly had time to pick you up before you started to make sounds! Every doctor waits for the baby to cry, to make sure the baby is healthy, but you, Oscar, you changed the rules on them. Your mother doesn’t remember this because she was so tired, but I will never forget it. You opened your mouth, and you gave a little laugh! That’s right, you laughed! And only then did you open your mouth wider to start crying like all the rest of the babies in the hospital. I hope you remember this story for the rest of your life, young man,” Grandma Rose continued. “This is the beginning of your oral history! My present to you!” Oscar couldn’t believe his ears. His own Grandma Rose was telling him a story he had never heard before. A big smile grew across Oscar’s face. What a special birthday this had turned out to be! 26. To Grandma Rose, why was Oscar so special when he was born? A. He didn’t make a sound. B. He didn’t laugh but cried. C. He laughed before he started to cry. D. A. he had forgotten Grandma Rose B. he had got so many expensive gifts on his birthday C. the recording had told him a special story of his mother D. the recording had brought Grandma’s love back to him 30. What is the best title of the story? A. A sad little boy B. A boring birthday party C. The history of Oscar D. An unforgettable present (B) Unable to stand, and suffering from a number of serious diseases in his advanced age, the world’s last male northern white rhino (犀牛) was euthanized by a rescue team in Kenya on 19th March, 2018. Only two of the northern white rhinos remain on Earth- his daughter, Najin, and granddaughter, Fatu. “We are all saddened by Sudan’s death. He was an amazing rhino, and will be remembered for the work he did to raise attention of the sad situation facing not only rhinos, but also the many thousands of other endangered animals,” Ol Pejeta Conservancy chief executive said. Sudan was born in 1972, in what is now South Sudan, when there were still about 1,000 northern white rhinos living in the wild. But their home was then destroyed by human. As The Washington Post’s Kevin wrote in a report of Sudan in 2015: “When wars broke out, the rhinos were largely killed for their meat or their horns (角), or sometimes exchanged for money or guns.” Rhino horn being highly prized is another reason for the killing of this kind of animal. The horn is considered to have medicinal qualities and is sold at very high prices. Even a recent drop in the price of rhino horn did not come soon enough to save the northern white rhino from near-certain disappearing in the world. But Sudan was saved from the horrible situation by people from a zoo in the Czech Republic when he was 3 years old. After the death of Suni in 2014, the second-to-last male, Sudan became the only male northern white rhino in the world. He spent the last years of his life under 24-hour protection. His horn had been cut off just in order to stop people from killing him for it, though it had begun to grow back. But the effort to save the northern white rhino seems to have come too late for a real turnaround. Sudan’s death is a cruel symbol of human not caring about nature and it saddened everyone who knew him. Hopefully it will call on human beings to save the endangered animals in the world. 31. What does he underlined word “euthanized” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Killed. B. Hurt. C. Saved. D. Found. 32. What will Sudan be remembered for? A. His big family. B. His unusual long life. C. His work to encourage animal protection. D. His courage of fighting against serious illnesses. 33. In what order did the following events take place? a. Sudan died in Kenya. b. Sudan was rescued by people. c. Sudan was reported by The Washington Post. d. Sudan became the last male northern white rhino. e. Sudan lived with about 1,000 northern white rhinos in the wild. A. e, b, d, c, a B. b, a, c, d, e C. b, c, a, e, d D. e, b, c, d, a 34. What made the northern white rhino almost disappear in the world? A. People didn’t cut off their horns. B. Human beings destroyed their homes. C. The price of the rhino horn dropped rapidly. D. There was no female northern white rhino left on Earth. 35. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage? A. To introduce the northern white rhino. B. To do a research on the northern white rhino. C. To raise people’s attention to save endangered animals. D. To find out the reasons why the northern white rhino was dying out. (C) SpaceX made history two months ago by launching the world’s most powerful rocket to Mars. Falcon Heavy, the 230ft rocket, successfully launched from Cape Canaveral- the same station where NASA sent man to the moon almost 50 years ago. There were no humans on the Falcon Heavy – but it’s not without a passenger. Founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk, sent one of his Tesla Car along for the ride with a human shape model called “Starman” sitting on the driver’s seat. For now, the world is very excited by the successful launch of the rocket. Elon Musk suggested the space trip could just become the greatest firework show ever seen. If it went wrong, the rocket actually managed to lift off. Why is there all this excitement? Watching live streams of an electric car floating in space, while the extra engines that carried it there softly land themselves back on Earth, it’s hard not to feel that we’re living in the future. Where is all this leading? Falcon Heavy is a great piece of work, by the researchers at SpaceX. It’s not the most powerful rocket ever made, and NASA’s Space Launch System will beat it when it finally launches. But it runs very cheaply, for a rocket; the fact that it can be re-used, at relatively little expense, could launch an exciting future of much more regular space launches. The set of Mr. Musk’s own car in the rocket is a sign of the real reason. This launch is such a big deal: it is being done by a man with talent, and the strong wish to make people talk about him and what he’s doing. There’s no reason for the car to be going to space except for a talking point- indeed, the rocket could carry some important scientific instruments instead- but when viewed as a show for a private space company which hopes to be the future of personal space travel, everything becomes more reasonable. The idea behind that plan is that it makes such space trip much cheaper, since private companies can develop and build the rockets. The companies can then increase the money they may earn with other private satellite launches and other work, cutting down the cost of space travel. 36. What did the rocket carry to space? A. A car with nothing. B. A car with a human driver. C. A car with a model. D. A car with a human passenger. 37. What is people’s opinion about this space trip to Mars? A. They are excited about it. B. Few of them know about the space trip. C. They don’t like the idea of the space trip. D. They are worried about the high price of the space trip. 38. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 8 refer to? A. NASA. B. Falcon Heavy. C. SpaceX company. D. Mr Musk’s own car. 39. According to the passage, Elon Musk sent a car to the space in order to __________. A. test his new car B. help carry important scientific tools C. raise the price of the private space trip D. let more people know about him and his work 40. The passage can be best described as a(n) __________. A. science research B. news report C. adventure story D. book review (D) Eating out Are you looking for somewhere special to go this weekend?
