Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?‎ Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.‎ ‎4.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A. The author believes the lives of the poorest will get better.‎ B. Much more progress will be made in the near future.‎ C. The work on health is the most valuable experience.‎ D. People’s efforts have been materially rewarded.‎ ‎【答案】‎ ‎4.B ‎5.C ‎6.B ‎7.A ‎【解析】‎ ‎【分析】‎ 试题分析:本文以虚拟语气的问句形式开头,鼓励人们奉献自己的一些时间和精力去帮助别人,最穷人的生活将会变得更好。 Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world. 故选A。 It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead. 故选A。 A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.‎ First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.‎ Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.‎ In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institutions should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.‎ One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.‎ To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.‎ ‎8.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this article?‎ A. To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem.‎ B. To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people.‎ C. To point out the need for government support for old people.‎ D. To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.‎ ‎9.What does the underlined word “viable” most probably mean?‎ A. Impossible. B. Practical. C. Useful. D. Successful.‎ ‎10.According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?‎ A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.‎ B. Increase savings levels of people during their working years.‎ C. Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old.‎ D. Make available pensions for those who have retired.‎ ‎11.What can be concluded from the passage?‎ A. Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.‎ B. Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.‎ C. Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people.‎ D. There is no single solution to the problems of the old.‎ ‎【答案】‎ ‎8.A ‎9.B ‎10.D ‎11.D ‎【解析】‎ ‎【分析】‎ 这篇文章主要讨论解决老年人的问题的办法,主要包括,雇主应该对退休的老人有责任,政府应该更多的照顾老人,还有一个解决方法就是政府和组织机构应该给老年人提供工作的地方,但是这些方法有利有弊。‎ ‎8. 故选A。‎ ‎9. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations说明上述的方法都有优缺点,所以单独一种方法并不能奏效,采用结合起来的方法会更好。 Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer.(不幸的是,我们国家目前的状况表明,这不是一种真正可实行的解决方法。) ‎ Plastic-Eating Worms Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of ‎ some hungry worms.‎ Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste(糊状物) and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass — apparently broken down by enzymes (酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.‎ Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food — beeswax — also allows them to break down plastic. "Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well, "she explains, "The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond. "‎ Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)?‎ Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process — not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic."‎ ‎12.What can we learn about the worms in the study?‎ A. They take plastics as their everyday food.‎ B. They are newly evolved creatures.‎ C. They can consume plastics.‎ D. They wind up in landfills.‎ ‎13.According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to .‎ A. identify other means of the breakdown B. find out the source of the enzyme C. confirm the research findings D. increase the breakdown speed ‎14.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might .‎ A. help to raise worms B. help make plastic bags C. be used to clean the oceans D. be produced in factories in future ‎15.What is the main purpose of the passage?‎ A. To explain a study method on worms.‎ B. To introduce the diet of a special worm.‎ C. To present a way to break down plastics.‎ D. To propose new means to keep eco-balance.‎ ‎【答案】‎ ‎12.C ‎13.C ‎14.D ‎15.A ‎【解析】‎ ‎【分析】‎ 本文为说明文。 Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food — beeswax — also allows them to break down plastic. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)? But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process — not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic." So far there is no effective way to get rid of it,‎ ‎ but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process — not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic." 2) to persuade readers(说服读者接受某种观点),常见于广告类的文章。 My mother is a diligent and kind woman.
