Below are four that you can enjoy during your trip to Britain. Cotswolds The Cotswolds are a range of hills measuring about 2,000 square kilometers, designated as an area of outstanding beauty and shared by countries of Somerset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Sometimes known as “The Heart of England”, the hills are small but perfectly formed and dotted with pleasant towns and well-preserved old villages inhabited mainly by well-preserved old English folk. Bath Bath is a historic Roman and Georgian spa city. It is a World Heritage (遗产) site, situated in 100 miles west of London and 15miles southeast of the nearest big city, Bristol. A unique city, Bath is famous for its hot springs, Roman period baths, medieval heritage and stately Georgain architecture. The famous English writer Jane Austen spent some time there, and her novel is a satire of the social life of the city at the time. Many of the sites she mentioned are still able to be visited in the city today. Much Wenlock The Shropshire town of Much Wenlock is a characteristically English town, off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. Not only is Much Wenlock a stunning beautiful medieval town, but it also played a part in the birth of the modern Olympic Games. Much Wenlock is the birthplace of William Penny Brookes, the inspiration for the modern Olympic Movement and founder of the Wenlock Olympian society. In recognition of its sporting heritage, the 2012 London Olympic Games named one of their mascots Wenlock. Castle Combe Nestled in a wooded Cotswold valley, with the ambling Bybrook River flowing through its heart, Castle Combe is a truly delightful example of the traditional English village. Architecturally, little has changed since the 15th century. There are no street lights or TV aerials and you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and you will understand why it has won the “Prettiest Village in England” award so many times. Castle Combe is also a favored location for Hollywood film and television companies. 21. In which place can we have a hot bath? A. Castle Combe. B. Costwolds. C. Bath. D. Much Wenlock. 22. According to the passage, we find the four places ______. A. charming and ancient B. ancient and crowded C. large and lonely D. green and modern 23. What is the purpose of the author’s writing this passage? A. To call on people to protect old places. B. To introduce some places worth a visit. C. To make the four places world-known. D. To promote tourism in the four places. B The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteer don’t expect any kind of pay. At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story. “I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I also wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends, I flew to Caltutta for a few weeks.” “I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets and passed out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.” 24. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who_______. A. is willing to help those in need without pay B. can afford to travel to different places C. has a strong wish to be successful D. has made a big fortune in life 25. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer? A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa. B. She had already had some experience. C. She was asked by Mother Teresa. D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example. 26. What is Tracy’s “new idea” (in paragraph 2) of being a volunteer? A. Going abroad to help the sick. B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home. C. Doing simple things to help the poor. D. Improving oneself through helping others. 27. What is the best title for the passage? A. How to Be a Volunteer. B. Voluntary Life in India. C. A Different Meaning of Volunteer. D. Inspiration from Mother Teresa. C I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore. For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only 1 percent of Australian’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45 percent of the world’s reefs are considered healthy. This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco-system has led me to take action. I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’ s species will all have a safe place forever. Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be a part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species. 28. From the underlined sentence in Para.1, we can learn the author_______. A. seldom went surfing at the sea B. forgot his experiences about the ocean C. never went back to his hometown D. had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay 29. According to the second paragraph, Australian marine life ______. A. is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually B. depends on reefs for living greatly C. may be faced with danger D. is protected better than that in other oceans 30. The Protect Our Coral Sea activity is intended to ______. A. contribute to a complete eco-system B. prevent more marine species being endangered C. set up a large nature reserve for reefs D. raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness 31. Angus and the author created a little video to______. A. urge more people to take action to protect the marine species B. inspire more people to explore the secret of the ocean C. share their childhood experiences about the ocean D. bring back to people their memories of ocean species D When pups are between 2 and 3months old, their mothers will abandon them for any number of reasons. With no mother to watch out for them, infant(婴儿)mortality of pups under one year skyrockets(飞涨)to around 90%. So, only about 10% of motherless, homeless pups survive. Without mothers, how are these abandoned pups supposed to survive? For the study, researchers Clive Wynne at Arizona State, Nadine Chersini at Utecht University, and Nathan Hal at Texas Tech University brought in 51 college students and asked them to rate the attractiveness of headshots(头部特写)of puppies at different ages. The pups peaked at different ages, but they were all ranked likable between six to eight weeks, since newly abandoned pups are competing with each other for human heartstrings(怜悯), evolution says they should be most likable around 6 and 11 weeks. This is around the time they are weaned (断奶) and let go of by their mothers. There are a few characteristics that humans find particularly adorable across species: big, forward-facing eyes, floppy and unstable limbs (肢), and a soft, rounded body shape. We’re also keen to scream when animals have large heads in comparison to their bodies, and this reaction goes back to evolution. Called kinderschema (婴儿萌),these qualities are also apparent in human babies and necessary for their survival. The characteristics activate the decision-making part of the brain to encourage you to protect and nurture the baby. At the same time, the brain’s pleasure center releases dopamine (多巴胺). With these two reactions, your brain makes you want to protect the baby and rewards you for doing so. With your protection, the baby can survive. 32. What does the underlined word "mortality" in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Birth rate. B. Injury. C. Growth. D. Death rate. 33. Why are the pups between 6 and 1l weeks the cutest? A. To get their mothers' love. B. To draw their mothers' attention. C. To get human's love and protection. D. To get food and milk. 34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Some characteristics of humans B. Comparison between animals and humans C. Some characteristics of being adorable. D. Description of some species 35. What can be inferred about human babies from the last paragraph? A. They can encourage you to make a decision. B. They have some qualities in common with pups. C. They can't survive without mothers' protection. D. They have similar brains as pups. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Top Healthy Homework Habits Your homework habits might be affecting your grades.
