We’re doomed! Doomed! Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, it’s become clear that while we may or may not be doomed, the robots are taking over. The latest example is the government’s new guidelines for self-driving cars. Tesla, Google and Uber are already testing driverless cars in cities across America. Uber chief executive Travis Kalanick is among those predicting that by 2021, self-driving cars will play a big part in urban settings. Nearly 40,000 people died last year in this nation in automobile-related accidents, and we believe driverless cars can save tens of thousands of lives annually. It makes sense. Robot drivers are less likely to get drunk, drive without a license, text while driving or feel agitated at the scene of a traffic jam. On the other hand, I wonder how these highly sensitive cars will react with walkers constantly dashing into the street. Will they jam on the brakes every 10 seconds? But there’s a bigger picture. Not only are robots replacing humans behind the wheel, but behind the work desk, in warehouses, senior homes, you name it. Robots aren’t just taking over in the workplace. The question is, where can’t a robot function better than a human? How about writing songs? A robot can go through every combination of notes in record time and come up with a pleasing melody. The lyrics might be a different story. Is a Grammy-winning song co-written by Hank Human and R-3071 in our future? Finally, it’s only a matter of time until we have robot politicians and presidential candidates. Why not? They can be programmed to be experts in world and domestic affairs and come up with the best solutions without corruption and bad humors. Actually, it’s too bad such technology isn’t available in 2018. Pretty sure the robot would win in a landslide. 24. What does the underlined word “agitated” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Exhausted. B. Embarrassed. C. Disappointed. D. Anxious. 25. What doubt does the writer have about self-driving cars? A. How passengers behave in it. B. How robot drivers get the license. C. How they respond to walkers on a busy street. D. How they avoid crashing into other cars. 26. The last question asked in Paragraph 6 reflects the writer’s . A. eagerness to listen to songs written by robots B. doubt about robots’ ability to write songs C. confidence in robots’ winning Grammy Awards D. curiosity about the future Grammy songs 27. What might be the most suitable title for the text? A. Robots will control the world in every field. B. Robots can drive cars and write music. C. Robots are being used in our daily life. D. Robots are coming but not soon enough. D 25. C 26. C 27. Robot drivers are less likely to get drunk, drive without a license, text while driving or feel agitated at the scene of a traffic jam. On the other hand, I wonder how these highly sensitive cars will react with walkers constantly dashing into the street. A robot can go through every combination of notes in record time and come up with a pleasing melody. Actually, it’s too bad such technology isn’t available in 2018. In the rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which says foods are safe to eat if you pick them up within 5 seconds after dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds is all it takes for foods to become polluted with enough bacteria to make you sick. Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If you eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, you can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Salmonella is often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods thoroughly. But how long does it take these bacteria to pollute food? A team of scientists in South Carolina did an experiment. First, they placed an amount of Salmonella on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They placed a piece of bread and a piece of sausage on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and the sausage picked up enough bacteria to make you sick. So, forget the 5-second rule. If your toast drops on the floor, throw it away and get another piece of clean toast. And next time, be careful not to drop it! 28. After dropping a piece of toast, a person who follows the “5-second rule” will_____. A. get another piece of clean toast quickly and eat it B. eat the toast within 5 seconds and feel pleased C. pick up the toast as quickly as possible and eat it D. throw away dirty toast immediately and go away 29. What can be inferred from the experiment done by the scientists? A. Food can pick up enough bacteria to make people sick after just 5 seconds. B. Bread and sausages are more easily polluted than other food. C. People cannot eat bread and sausages placed on wood, tile, and carpet. D. People can eat food dropped on the floor within 30 seconds. 30. What can we learn after reading the passage? A. We shouldn’t throw food away because they are precious. B. We’d better not eat the food dropped on the floor. C. Follow the 5-second rule, and our life can be better. D. The 5-second rule is not fit for everyone. 31. In which part of a newspaper can you most probably find this passage? A. Culture. B. Technology. C. Advertisement. D. Health. C 29. A 30. B 31. If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which says foods are safe to eat if you pick them up within 5 seconds after dropping them. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and the sausage picked up enough bacteria to make you sick. If your toast drops on the floor, throw it away and get another piece of clean toast. And next time, be careful not to drop it! Tang Dynasty poets sang for about three centuries in different tones. There were many famous poets living in the Tang period such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and Li Shangyin. Poems of the Tang Dynasty edited in the Qing Dynasty is a collection of about 48,900 poems that were written by over 2,200 poets. But it didn’t cover all the poems of the Tang Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty, poems were recited when lovers walked under the moonlight. Poems were also recited when soldiers fought on the battlefield. People recited them in the open air or at temple fairs. In the Tang Dynasty scholars had to be poets. Their readers were not only people of high social position but also common people. Poets recited poems; women singers sang poems and other ranks of people, including old women and children, read Tang poems. This atmosphere affected foreigners who visited the country at that time. As a result, Tang poetry was introduced to some adjacent countries, like Japan and Vietnam. Tang poetry is a most brilliant page in the history of ancient Chinese literature. It’s a miracle in the cultural history of mankind. The Tang Dynasty was a powerful empire with a vast territory. It inherited Chinese civilization that went back to ancient times, and was combined with the best of other cultures and adopted the benefits of other nations in the world. Tang poetry wasn’t the only spiritual wealth created by the Tang Dynasty people. Philosophy and religion, handwriting and painting and music and dance all gained new peaks of development. In the Tang Dynasty all scholars were poets. B. Tang Dynasty poems were quite popular. C. Many foreigners came to our country during the Tang Dynasty. D. Some other kinds of spiritual wealth in the Tang Dynasty. C. The significance and influence of the Tang Dynasty. D. The editors of Poems of the Tang Dynasty. A 33. A 34. B 35. Poems of the Tang Dynasty edited in the Qing Dynasty is a collection of about 48,900 poems that were written by over 2,200 poets.
