B After watching her father struggle with pain and other health issues for years before he was diagnosed(诊断)with two tick-borne(蜱传播)illnesses,Muriel Metko,a biology graduate in University Of Wisconsin Eau Claire (UWEC), knew she wanted a career in medicine. Metko also knew, with its strong biology program,UWEC would give her the foundation and guidance she needed to pursue her dreams of studying medicine and specializing in infectious disease. As she prepares to graduate, her plans still include medical school, but thanks to a newly discovered passion for research, she also now plans to earn a doctorate along with her medical degree. Thus she can practice medicine and engage in research. During her second year in college, Dr. Phillips, professor of chemistry, asked her to join his research team. She enjoyed it so much that when that first project ended, she joined Dr. Dahl's chemistry lab. As a student researcher, Metko has presented their research at a national conference and is working with Dahl on an academic paper for publication. Last summer,Metko worked in Mayo Clinic, where she watched clinicians and researchers cooperate to develop the best diagnostic tools and treatment plans for patients. Her experience here solidified her future career path. “Prior to going to Mayo Clinic, this was just a career I had read about,” Metko says of physician-researchers. “I'd met medical doctors and Ph.D.s,but never someone who was both. Here were living examples of such people, who practiced medicine and spent time in their lab advancing the field, doing exactly what I want to do.” Bright as her future is, Metko's overcome many challenges like endless health issues, but with a positive attitude to life, she's actively received treatment and got through. “With a major in biology and two minors in chemistry and pre-professional health sciences, all the courses taken at UWEC have given me a solid foundation to pursue graduate studies and earn my M.D.- Ph.D.,"Metko says. 24.What contributed to Metko's initial idea to pursue a medical career? A. Her desire to become the breadwinner of her family. B.Her university's latest education-aid program. C. Her poor living conditions in childhood. D.Her father's sufferings from diseases. 25. How was Metko's love for research inspired? A. Through hands-on engagement in a project. B. Through frequent class interaction activities. C.Through her professor's specific guidance. D. Through her required courses in college. 26. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to?. A. Serving as a clinician. B.Working in Mayo Clinic. C.Acting as a doctor and researcher. D.Developing efficient medicines. 27. Which of the following best describes Metko? A. Ambitious and optimistic. B.Humorous and courageous. C.Generous and sensitive. D. Talented and demanding. C Andean Condors(秃鹰),weighing up to 13 kilograms with a 10-foot wingspan, are one of the world's heaviest and largest flying birds. Spending their days circling the Andes mountains and nearby Pacific coasts in search of food, they manage to stay afloat (悬浮) for hours. Though researchers have long suspected that the massive creatures conserved energy by using rising air currents to surf the skies, nobody had ever documented how infrequently the birds used their wings afloat. Now, a new study has found that the incredibly energy-efficient condors use their wings just 1 percent of their time - mostly during takeoff and landing. The extensive research, conducted in Patagonia from 2013 to 2018, involved attaching high- tech flight recorders to the birds' 'wings. The collected information was too much to send back via the phone or satellite network. Hence, the researchers had to physically take back the devices, which were designed to fall off the birds after a week. While a GPS tracker allowed the scientists to confirm the recorders' exact locations, getting to them was no easy task given Patagonia's rough surface features. After losing seven recorders for every one they took back, the team shifted their focus to younger condors, who tend to fly over gently rolling hills rather than the mountain tops frequented by adults. The 250 hours of collected flight data revealed that the birds flew for an average of three hours but flapped(拍打)their wings for less than two minutes of the time. One efficient pilot managed to cover 172 kilometers over five hours without a single flap! The researchers say the large fliers consume the most energy during takeoff. However, once in the air, they can fly for long periods of time without turning on their “engines". The scientists suppose that adult condors may demonstrate an even more impressive flight record than the younger. 28. What's the new study mainly about? A.Feeding habits of condors. B. Function of condors' wings. C. Frequency of condors flapping wings. D. Ways of condors' drawing on air currents. 29. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3? A. Indicate difficulty of getting recorders back. B. Highlight condors' ability to fly high. C.Present a research outcome. D.Introduce condors' habitats. 30.Where did the researchers usually find the recorders afterwards? A. Mountain peaks. B.Gentle hillsides. C. Wide valley. D.Rough sea. 31. In which column of a website can we read the text? A. Environment. B.Nature. C.Education. D.Geography. D SpaceX's first-ever passenger flight to the International Space Station (ISS) ended successfully on August 2,2020,when Crew Dragon Endeavour landed into the Gulf of Mexico. After a series of safety checks, the recovery teams unlocked the capsule's hatch and moved NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to shore. During their total 64 days in space, they completed 1,024 orbits around Earth and traveled 27,147,284 miles. In a press conference the astronauts described the crucial final minutes of the historic mission when Crew Dragon fired its rocket pusher to slow its descent for re-entry into the outer atmosphere."It came alive,"Behnken told of the 12-minute pusher burn. “It sounds like an animal coming through the atmosphere." Hurley told reporters that following the successful landing, the astronauts had to complete one final task-"making satellite phone calls to whoever we can get a hold of'”。 The scientists said the fun attempt had a serious purpose- to ensure that future crews could use the emergency phone to contact mission control in case the spacecraft landed in an unexpected part of the ocean. Crew Dragon Endeavour was launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on May 30, 2020. After19 hours, the spacecraft autonomously pulled up at the forward port of ISS. Hurley and Behnken spent their 62 days aboard the station conducting scientific experiments alongside Expedition 63's crew and participating in numerous public engagements. Behnken also accompanied ISS Commander Chris Cassidy on four spacewalks to upgrade two power channels. The journey marked the first time astronauts have been launched to orbit aboard a privately- built spacecraft. It was also the first crewed orbital piloted launch from American soil since the US Space Shuttle program ended in July 2011. With the final test flight complete, NASA will spend the next few weeks analyzing all performance data. If everything is satisfactory,SpaceX will become the first private company to be certified to transport astronauts to the ISS. In anticipation of the approval, Space-X is already preparing for its first two operational missions. 32. What does the underlined word “descent” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Crash. B. Launch. C. Falling. D. Burning. 33. Which of the following best describes Behnken' s mission? A. Orbit Earth, experiment, issue certificates. B.Experiment, improve channels, make calls. C.Spacewalk, repair, analyze data. D.Interpret, spacewalk, interview. 34.What is Space-X most looking forward to? A.Obtaining public recognition. B.Completing the final test flight. C.Getting licensed for crewed flights to the ISS. D.Releasing their latest news about space technology. 35.What's the best title for the text? A.Crew Dragon Endeavour:A Private Spacecraft. B.First-ever Manned Space Flight Ends in Success C.NASA Astronauts: Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley D.SpaceX's Spacecraft Returns NASA Astronauts to Earth 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 Using an ice pack on a sports injury is a common practice to reduce pain and swelling(肿 胀) to the injured soft tissues.36 Here are principles you must master to avoid these mistakes. Leaving ice on an injury for too long can cause more harm than good because ice can reduce the blood flow to the injured area and slow the healing(治愈)process. The ideal time to ice an injury is immediately after the injury, and then only for about 10 minutes at a time. 37 Ice should not be needed after the first 24 hours unless your doctor recommends it to reduce active swelling. Reducing swelling is an important part of the healing process, and this requires lifting the injury above the heart to increase blood circulation(流通)while icing the injured area.38 While exposure to cold can ease pain and swelling, ice may cause frostbite and damage to the delicate tissues of the skin if done incorrectly.39 For instance, you can put a cloth towel between your skin and a cold pack. 40 Therefore, even if you follow the recommendations for safe icing of an injury, you must also rest the injured joint immediately after the injury occurs. It is recommended not to bear weight on an injured joint for the first 24 hours.Continuing the play sports with an injury may prolong the healing process, so check with your doctor regarding when to return to sports. A.Icing alone is not a cure-all. B.For this reason, always use a barrier. C.But many people make errors when using it. D.Too much rest and not enough movement can slow healing. E.Thus, icing aches and pains is the ideal injury treatment option. F.Otherwise, you're simply reducing pain but the swelling won't go away. G.It's vital to allow the tissues to “warm up" again before returning ice to the injury. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的 最佳选项。 My busy parents and I lived in a small house in Brighton, to which we moved on my third birthday. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool. The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out? Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified,I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more. So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?" “The thought hadn't crossed my mind." " Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class.” Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me-You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it. Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies. Work started soon. A well- intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary. Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool,I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 "Something must have gone wrong with him,"I thought to myself. Having the boy on the floor,I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. 2020-2021 学年度第一学期期中考试 高三英语参考答案 第一部分 听力 1—5 CCBCA 6—10 ABCAB 11—15 ABABC 16—20 BACCB 第二部分 阅读 21—23 DAD 24—27 DACA 28—31 CABB 32—35 CBCD 36—40 CGFBA 第三部分 语言运用 41—45 CACDB 46—50 ABDBC 51—55 CDBDA 56. the 57. meant 58. getting 59. awareness 60. are 61. for 62. when 63. was held 64. strongly 65. effective 第四部分 写作 第一节 (One possible version) Dear Peter, Knowing that you’d like to select a Chinese gift for your mother before returning to England soon, I’m happy to recommend you a silk dress as a gift. As is known, Chinese silk industry has the longest history with the famous Silk Road as an indication. Besides, with strong Chinese cultural characteristics, Chinese silk dresses are comfortable and elegant to wear. They are a favorite choice for ladies of your mother’s age. I’m sure your mother will definitely like one. Best wishes to your family. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 (One possible version) “Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, his head hanging down, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water. Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell he had no heartbeat and wasn’t breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I’m happy I didn’t take the easy way out. 听力录音材料: Text 1 W: In order to get up this hill, you’ll need to go fast. At the top, you need to slow down your speed. M: How will I know when to stop? W: When I raise my hand, I want you to stop your bike. Text 2 M: How do you like bringing your laptop to school? I bet it saves you room in your bag. W: Having this laptop has changed my life. I used to carry many books to my classes. Now, it has really cured my back problems. Text 3 M: Thanks for taking me out on your boat, Christine. I’ve never been on one before. W: You’re welcome. But before you put one foot on this boat, I need you to wear one of these. I don’t want you to be in danger. Text 4 M: I thought today was going to be tough, but I found a quick way to get everything out of the apartment. I got all the chairs downstairs and into the truck in less than an hour. W: Great. I’ll drive the truck over in a while. Text 5 W: Well, if you don’t want to go see the jazz band, what do you want to do? It’s already too late to get a ticket for the museum. M: Why don’t we just go see a movie instead? It’s much cheaper than the other two choices. Text 6 W: I honestly think John would move across the country for our company if they asked him. M: I think he would. I would never do that, though. I think they take advantage of him. He deserves to be paid much better, because he has contributed a lot to our company. I would be annoyed to be here for as long as he has without getting more money. W: How long has he been working here? M: He’s been here since the beginning. Text 7 M: Welcome to Sherry Farms. We have a large range of fresh produce available for purchase over there at the market stand. If you need any help, please let me know. I will be tending the animals nearby. W: I’m actually here for some advice, if that’s OK. I heard that you sometimes give lessons on how to take care of plants, is this true? I am looking to start growing some things at my house. M: That’s great. I am glad you are inspired to grow your own food. We do give lessons once a week, on Saturday afternoons. W: Fantastic. How much does the lesson cost? M: The lesson is free. In exchange, the students will be doing three hours of farm work related to the class. W: That’s perfect. I learn better by working with my hands. Text 8 W: Before our last break, we were talking with John Phillips and his new movie Earthquake. What was the most difficult aspect of the filming process? M: The action scenes. We wanted them to look as real as possible, so we built all these fake buildings and structures and then destroyed them. W: Wow! You did this to make the movie appear more real? M: Yes. Most movies these days are made in front of a “green screen”. It makes it harder for my actors to do their job. So, I wanted to make one that had as few special effects as possible. W: An earthquake movie with no special effects? M: Ha-ha. Well, I didn’t say there wouldn’t be “any”. W: When will it come out? M: The first showing is on Saturday, June 22nd, but that is just for the actors. It comes out the following weekend in North America and in Hong Kong, China on July 10th. W: Well, I wish you luck with the movie and thank you for coming on the show. M: It was my pleasure. Text 9 M: Hi, Lucy. W: Hi, Tony. M: You look really well! Have you been on vacation? W: Sure. I was in China. M: Nice. How was it? W: I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from work. M: Where did you go? W: Hainan Island and Qingdao. M: How did you like Hainan Island? W: Well, it’s cleaner than I thought it would be, and there are lots of trees, so I liked it better than I thought I would. But it’s huge! And it’s really hard to get around. The ship service is terrible, and of course, they don’t have a subway system. We had to rent a car. M: And was the weather good? W: Oh, yes. It was nice and warm in Hainan Island. M: What about Qingdao? W: The weather? It was cooler than Hainan Island. M: Cool in Qingdao? That’s surprising. W: Yeah. And it was a problem because we didn’t take any sweaters or anything, but they say it’s always like that in December. Anyway, I loved it. It’s probably the most beautiful city in China. M: You’re lucky! Text 10 I will be collecting everyone’s cellphone before the exam. Please come to the front of the room and put your devices into the basket. Personally, I don’t think anyone of you will use your phones to cheat. However, I must take them because this state exam requires me to do it. I know this test is extremely important to most of you, so I do not believe you would let your phones interrupt you anyway. Now I am going to pass out some tape for you to write your name on your phone so that none will be mixed up. I cannot give you the test paper until I have received a phone or you have proved you do not have one with you. While you write down your names, I will go over some details about the test. There are 10 questions on each page and 10 pages in total, each page has a front and back side. Before you hand it in, make sure to fill out both. I would not return your test paper once I have received it. I know this test seems scary, but you have all covered this material before. In my mind, there is no doubt that everyone here will do very well. If you are unsure of a question, skip it and then return to it later. Good luck, everyone.
