After drawing a challenge card, players must arrange pieces and fill in holes on the game board to allow the right number of marbles to run through the channels and into each box at the bottom of the board. Because it requires more patience and abstract, special thinking skills than some other kinds of logic puzzles, Marble Circuit is recommended for the over-8 crowd. (MindWare, $ 24. 95) Botzees Kids can follow directions or use their imaginations to build a robot out of the 130 blocks, and then command it to dance, sing, drum, and light up with the companion app on a smart device (设备) or tablet. Though the robot-building appealed to younger testers, kids aged 5 and up enjoyed the toy’s advanced features. (Pai Technology, $ 99. 99) How to Code a Rollercoaster Just as coding can be used to tell stories, this is a story about coding. This picture book does a good job of introducing and explaining what code is, how computers understand it, and introducing common coding terms — variables, loops, if-then. The volume is part of the popular “Girls Who Code” series but intended for the younger reader. (Penguin Random House, $ 17. 99) Code Like a Girl Miriam Peskowitz features women in the computer science field in this how-to book. It shows how people are working to make tech a more inclusive place to code. Written with a cookbook-like feel, the book provides encouraging, step-by-step tips and tricks for learning the Python computer language, and more. (Penguin Random House, $ 21. 99) 21. B For several months, Cara has been working up the courage to approach her mom about what she saw on Instagram. Not long ago, the 11-year-old girl discovered that her mom had been posting her photos for much of her life. “I’ve wanted to bring it up. It’s strange to see myself up there, and sometimes there are pictures I don’t like of myself,” she said. Like most other modern kids, Cara grew up under the influence of social media. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were all founded before she was born. Instagram has been around since she was a toddler. While many kids may not yet have accounts themselves, their parents, schools, sports teams have been organizing an online presence for them since birth. It is a shock to know that details about their lives have been shared online without their permission or knowledge. And this has become a common experience for many teenagers. Recently a parenting blogger said that despite her 14-year-old daughter’s horror at discovering that her mother had shared years of highly personal stories and information about her online, she simply could not stop doing it. But it’s not just crazy mommy bloggers who share their children’s information on social media. Plenty of average parents do the same. There’s even a special word for it: sharenting (晒 娃).Almost a quarter of children begin their digital lives when parents upload their prenatal sonogram scans (产前超声波扫描) to the Internet to a study conducted by the Internet-security firm AVG. The study also found that 92 percent of kids under the age of 2 already have their own unique digital identity. 24.What does the underlined word “toddler” in the second paragraph probably mean? A. Teenage girl. B. School student. C. Daughter. D. Very young child. 唐山一中 2020-2021 学年高三年级期中考试 英语试卷 第 5 页 (共 15页) 25.What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. AVG is the name of an Internet company. B. 25% of children begin their digital lives before they are born. C. Fathers don’t like to share their kids’ information on social media. D. The word “sharenting” has been appearing on the Internet recently. 26.What can be a suitable title for the article? A. Growing up on the Internet B. A New Term Born C. Parents Addicted to Blogging D. The Children’s Horror C In the late 1960s, the anthropologist ( 人 类 学 家 ) Edmund Carpenter arrived in New Guinea armed with mirrors, videos and Polaroid cameras, and a mission: to disrupt (扰乱) the minds of members of the Biami tribe, who had never seen full images of themselves. “After their first astonished response — covering their mouths and ducking their heads — they stood frozen, staring at their images.” Carpenter’s devices disturb that inner image, causing discomfort. But not for long. Within days, the villagers groomed (打扮) themselves openly before mirrors and began taking Polaroid shots of each other. It’s unclear if the People of Biami were really as unfamiliar with mirrors as Carpenter thought. But in any case, what’s striking isn’t how strange their reaction seems, but how related. Do you know how it feels when you make a pleasant remark in a lift, but nobody responds? Or when two people greeting each other misjudge whether to go for a handshake, a hug or a social kiss? That’s the same awkwardness: “self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty”, as Dahl defines it. Suddenly, I see I’m viewed not as a friendly conversationalist, but as a strange person who talks in the lift. As awkwardness feels unpleasant, it’s natural to want to overcome it. Dahl’s initial motivation for writing her book Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness, was to get over her own awkwardness. But after a journey through various awkward experiences, she makes a persuasive case for celebrating it. We live in an era with more opportunities than ever to do so. But awkwardness breaks that false appearance, exposing the imperfect life behind it. It creates a strange kind of social bond―how much in common we have when seeing that behind the disguise —we’re all just trying our best to seem faultless. The awkward you, then, are the real you, the one without the defensive performance. Dahl even indicates that taking a friendlier attitude toward awkwardness might help us make connections with people holding different ideas. 27. How did the people of Biami feel when they first saw themselves in the mirror? A. Shocked at their reflections. B. Satisfied with their images. C. Curious about their looks. D. Ashamed of their appearance. 唐山一中 2020-2021 学年高三年级期中考试 英语试卷 第 6 页 (共 15页) 28. Which of the following awkwardness is “self-consciousness tinged with uncertainty”? A. You slip over just to the face of your girl in dream. B. You are caught cheating but get nothing in an exam. C. You are found standing in pubic with your trousers zip open. D. You’re refused when offering your seat to a seemingly pregnant woman. 29. What causes you to feel embarrassed from time to time? A. Not knowing anything novel. B. Seeking perfection. C. Avoiding pressure from others. D. Lacking courage to face some problems. 30. What can be inferred to solve our awkwardness? A. Treat others in a friendly way. B. Connect with your friends regularly. C. Express yourself honestly with no defensive cover. D. Get ready to guard against any threat from others. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 Being independent is an important skill for people who want to take control of their lives. Here are some tips on how to be independent. Believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, then who else will? 31 No one can speak the words on your lips and not everyone is going to agree with what you say. 32 If you don’t have faith in yourself, you will always doubt yourself and turn to others for help every time you have to make a decision. Try to move away from that. 33 Our parents care for us so much that they do everything in their power to raise us in a fair and just environment. But the real world does not follow the same principle. You might be treated badly for all sorts of unfair things: your skin color, your height, your weight, how much money you have, and just about everything else that makes you who you are. 34 Stop caring about what other people think. This is the most important thing about being independent. Stop worrying about other people’s opinions about your life, whether they are thinking about your clothes, your choice of career, or your choice of significant other. 35 If you always have the worrying thought, “But what will other people think if…” in the back of your head, then you will always be holding yourself back from doing your own thing. A. Be your own hero. B. Accept that life is not fair. C. These are your decisions, and not anyone else’s. D. As long as you have made a decision — just do it! E. We are all different and have something unique to say. F. So please remember: you have to be happy in spite of that. G. Believing in yourself will make you trust your own decisions. A new family moved in next door and I got to meet the mother of the family, Lydia. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year. Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited. I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest. A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added. “I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.” This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Mrs. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine. The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Soon, it was my turn to talk. _________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ 唐山一中 2020-2021 学年高三年级期中考试 英语试卷 第 11 页 (共 15页) Finally, results were announced after the contest. ________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ 唐山一中 2020—2021 学年度第一学期期中考试答案 第一部分 听力 1-5 CACBA 6-10 CACBB 11-15 BACCA 16-20 ACAAB 第二部分 阅读理解 21-23 ABB 24-26 DBA 27-30 ADBC 31-35 EGBFC 第三部分 完形填空 36-40 BCDCA 41-45 DCAAC 46-50 BBBDD 51-55 CABDA 第四部分 单句填空 56. is distributed 57.applicants 58.voluntary 59. acknowledgement 60. to undertake 61. narrowness 62. reflected 63. theoretical 64. annually 65. occurring 66. racially 67.preparations 68. occupying 69.indicated 70. has struck 第五部分 写作 第一节 One possible version: Dear John, I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from TikTok addiction. Actually, it is commonly seen that more and more teenagers get crazy about TikTok and spend a lot of time watching and sharing videos online, which makes them unable to focus on study. Therefore, immediate measures should be taken to stop it. You should start some other hobbies, such as reading, listening to music or playing chess. Besides, you had better make more friends through face to face communication. I sincerely hope that these ideas can help you with the problem.(94words) Best wishes! Yours, Li Hua One possible version: Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke in an expressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, my eyes filled with tears. 唐山一中 2020-2021 学年高三年级期中考试 英语试卷 第 12 页 (共 15页) Finally, results were announced after the contest. I did not win any prizes---not even a consolation one. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I now regretted being so arrogant. I had learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the two sayings, “Pride goes before a fall.” and “Practice makes perfect.” (154words) 听力原文 Text 1 W: How about seeing the new film at the theater tomorrow? M: Sorry. I have a GRE class every Friday, and the next day I always have to look over my notes at home. Text 2 M: Hey, Katherine. Do you know any special ways to listen to lectures better? W: Well, I like to take notes. But if the topic is difficult, I often record the whole thing. That way, I can listen to the lecture all over again and take really good notes. Text 3 W: Hi, Thomas. This is Katie. I found your notebook in the library. Please come to get it back in the classroom. Or I just leave it in the teachers’ office in Room 201, if you don’t have time now. M: Oh. That’s great, Katie! I have been looking for it all day long. I’ll go to get it tomorrow morning. Text 4 M: I find there are plenty of classical music CDs on the Internet. You can buy them very cheaply if you like them. W: Great. I know you very often listen to them. You can try some rock music, which can make you energetic and powerful. And jazz music also makes people feel relaxed. M: Mm… I sometimes listen to them. Text 5 M: You really have a lot of hobbies, Sarah. How do you find time to keep up with all of them? 唐山一中 2020-2021 学年高三年级期中考试 英语试卷 第 13 页 (共 15页) W: That’s the nice thing about being retired. I have always had a desire to do more in the field of art, and now that I have time, I really enjoy taking art classes at the community college. Text 6 M: I’m terribly sorry, Tina. I’ve broken your glasses. I was looking for the dictionary you borrowed from me yesterday on the desk while you were out for a break. W: Well, it doesn’t matter. It’s my fault. I forgot to return it to you on time after I used it to look up some words in it. I should say sorry to you first. M: I need it badly now, so I began to search for it on your desk. I should have been careful. I’ll pay for it. W: No, there is no need to pay. You treat me an ice cream after class. That’s enough. Text 7 W: Good morning. Harwich Hospital. How may I help you? M: Hello, I made an appointment with Dr. Martin, but I have to make a change now. W: Oh, who’s calling, please? M: It’s Adam Welsh. W: Ah yes, Mr. Welsh. Your appointment is at 11:00 am on Wednesday. Is there a problem? M: Well, unfortunately I won’t be able to come tomorrow as I live out of town and I’ve been cut off by last night’s sudden snowstorm. Could I possibly have another appointment for the same time the day after tomorrow when the weather will hopefully be better? W: Wait a moment, please. I’ll just check. Yes, that’ll be fine. M: Thank you very much. W: You’re welcome. I’ll inform Dr. Martin of the change. Thank you for calling. Text 8 M: Let’s plan a trip for the summer break. W: All right. I heard there are some little villages with beautiful scenery and interesting shops. M: Oh no. We don’t have that much money to do some shopping. W: You’re right. Anyway, I’d like to have a look. I just heard there are some really nice arts in the villages. The best place to find a good variety of local artworks such as paintings and handmade jewelry is Richmond. The only trouble is that there aren’t any places to eat. Luckily, there are some great restaurants and cafés in Rosemount 15 minutes by bike away from it. Nice to meet you, too. W: So, you’ve applied to do a teaching course here. M: Yes, that’s right. W: I’d like you to tell me, first of all, why you want to be a teacher. M: OK. Well, I’ve always loved explaining things and helping people. I’m not looking for an easy job—I like a challenge! I also want to work with young people. W: And why have you decided to become a PE teacher? M: OK, playing sports is my favorite. I really believe it’s important for young people to do sports at school. W: Oh, mine is watching sports. Well, why is it so important, do you think? M: OK. Well, first of all, we all know it’s important for our health to keep physically fit. Secondly, physical exercise is good for our mental well-being.
