I wonder how he would react if I were to read my newspaper out loud on the train, I have never had the courage to do it, though. Pak50 57 minutes ago Why not give it a try? Perhaps you should take lessons on a musical instrument. The late musician Dennis Brian is said to have asked a fellow train passenger to turn off his radio. When his request was refused, he took out his French horn(号) and started to practice. Angie O’ Edema 42 minutes ago I don’t see how musical instruments can help improve manners in public. Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t like to be done to yourself. Once, a passenger next to me talked out loud on his mobile phone. I left my seat quietly, giving him some privacy to finish his conversation. He realized this and apologised to me. When his phone rang again later, he left his seat to answer it. You see, a bit of respect and cooperation can do the job better. Taodas 29 minutes ago I did read my newspaper out loud on a train, and it turned out well. The guy took it in good part, and we chatted happily all the way to Edinbergh. Sophie 76 13minutes ago I have not tried reading my newspaper out loud on a train, but, several years ago, I read some chapters from Harry Porter to my bored and noisy children. Several passengers seemed to appreciate what I did. 21. The passenger made an apology to Angie O’ Edema because _________. A. he ignored Angie’s request B. he refused to talk with Angie C. he spoke very loudly on his phone D. he offered his seat to someone else 22. Who once read a newspaper out loud on a train? A. Taodas B. Angie O’ Edema C. Pak50 D. Sophie76 23. What is the discussion mainly about? A. How to make a phone call. B. How to kill time on a train. C. How to chat with strangers. D. How to react to bad behavior. 24. Where is the passage most probably taken from? A. A newspaper. B. A webpage. C. A novel. D. A report. B Dear Alfred, I want to tell you how important your help is to my life. Growing up, I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with an IQ of 150 at 17, I’m anything but stupid. The fact was that I was found to have ADIID(注意力缺陷多动障碍). Anxious all the time, I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time. However, when something did interest me, I could become absorbed. In high school, I became curious about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover, I completed the senior course of Computer Basics, plus five relevant pre-college courses. While I was exploring my curiosity, my disease got worse. I wanted to go to college after high school, but couldn’t. So, I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center. Since then, I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics. Currently, I’m learning your Probability course. I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in self-written notes from your video. This has given me a purpose. Last year, I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public, I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to. Luckily, I discovered the job—Data Analyst—this month and have been going full steam ahead. I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to college, and be just as good as, if not better than, my competitors. Thank you. You’ve given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time, I feel good about myself because I’m doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good. I feel whole. This is why you’re saving my life. Yours, Tanis 25. Why didn’t Tanis go to college after high school? A. She had learned enough about computer science. B. She was too slow to learn. C. She preferred taking online courses. D. She had more difficulty keeping focused. 26. As for the working environment, Tanis prefers____. A. dealing with the public B. working by herself C. competing against others D. staying with ADHD students 27. Tanis wrote this letter in order to_____. A. show how grateful she was to the center B. describe the courses she had taken so far C. explain why she was interested in the computer D. share the ideas she had for her profession C Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored (监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories. “ The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.” Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication---e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations---found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others. Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused (激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, " Contagious: Why Things Catch On." 28. What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to? A. Private e-mails B. News reports C. Research papers D. Daily conversations 29. What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer? A. They’re socially inactive. B. They’re good at telling stories. C. They’re careful with their words. D. They’re inconsiderate of others. 30. Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr. Berger’s research? A. Financial reviews B. Personal accounts C. Science articles D. Sports news 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks. B. Online News Attracts More People. C. Reading Habits Change with the Times D. Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide. D Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding. We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it is either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first. Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical (按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works. Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can---then let the unconscious take over. When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable. One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep. An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing. Human beings, I believe must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired. 32. People with start-up fatigue are most likely to _________. A. delay tasks B. work hard C. seek help D. accept failure 33. What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue? A. Writing essays in strict order. B. Dealing with the hardest task first. C. Leaving out the toughest ideas. D. Building up physical strength. 34. On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue? A. Before starting a difficult task. B. After finding a way out. C. If the job is rather boring. D. When all the solutions fail. 35. What does the underlined word “relieved” mean in the passage? A. worried B. regretful C. comforted D. desperate 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Boosting Your Brain Power Who hasn’t wished that they were just a little smarter?
