This week, we’re looking at four of the best book recommendation sites, based on your nominations(提名). Goodreads Goodreads is more than just a book recommendation site, although it excels (擅长于)at helping you find new books to read based on the ones you enjoy. You can build a virtual “shelf” of books you own or have already read, share your progress with the books you’re currently reading, rate the books you’ve read, leave reviews, and connect with other readers. BookBub While BookBub isn’t strictly a book recommendation site, it does bring you super-low cost books based on your interests every day. The service is free, and when you sign up, you tell BookBub what kinds of books you like to read. From there, you’ll get an email from BookBub every day with book deals for that day. When we say “deal”, we mean it—many of BookBub’s titles are free entirely, $0.99, or just a couple of bucks. LibraryThing LibraryThing has been around for a long time and is still a great user-powered book rating(评价), review, and recommendation site. The service calls itself the world’s largest book club, and that’s a lot like the overall feel. Once you sign up, you’ll be encouraged to start adding books you’ve read and leave reviews for them. Behind its book ratings and reviews though, LibraryThing is a powerful tool to catalog and organize your entire book collection. Olmenta If you’re not interested in registering for accounts, adding your own books, or any of that hassle(麻烦), Olmenta can suggest some solid titles to you based on general popularity and the citations(称赞) of the people behind the site. It’s a simple list of book covers that the service thinks you should read, and a few genres(题材、种类) you can click on if you’re looking for something specific, like business, fiction, theatre, poetry, or nonfiction, among others. 21. Which of the following two book recommendation sites ask you to rate and leave reviews? A. Goodreads and BookBub. B. BookBub and LibraryThing. C. LibraryThing and Olmenta. D. Goodreads and LibraryThing. 22. Which book recommendation site can help you get super-low cost books? A. Goodreads. B. BookBub. C. LibraryThing. D. Olmenta. 23. If you turn to Olmenta, you ______. A. need to pay more B. need to add your own books C. don’t need to sign up D. don’t need to look for something specific B The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. The WHO finds that poor cooking, heating and lighting technologies are killing millions of people each year. Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cookstoves in the home. To help fight the problem, the WHO announced new guidelines(标准) aimed at reducing household pollutants. WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. And they say more than seven million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, the WHO says about 4.3 million people die from household air pollution given off by simple coal cookstoves. WHO officials say indoor pollution leads to early deaths from stroke, heart and lung disease. The main victims are women and girls in developing countries, where they usually stay at home and do the household work. Carlos Dora is Coordinator in the WHO’s Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health. He says people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosene(煤油)fuel indoors. He says opening a window or door to let out the harmful air will not improve the situation. It will only pollute the outdoors. Nigel Bruce is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good cookstoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way. WHO experts note some new, safe and low-cost technologies that could help are already available. In India, you can buy an induction(电磁感应)stove for about $ 8. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1. But, this, the agency says, is just a start. It is urging developing countries to use cleaner fuels and increase access to cleaner and more modern cooking and heating appliances. 24. What does “the problem” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. They are very weak in the developing countries. B. They are more sensitive to the indoor air pollution. C. They are exposed to the indoor air pollution more. D. To promote cleaner and more modern cooking appliances. D. To popularize the traditional cookstoves in the home. 27. What is the best title of the text? A. How to prevent pollution B. How to protect women and girls C. Indoor air pollution kills millions each year D. The importance of health in developing countries C Lately, my 90-year-old mom has been more and more quiet and sleepy. This is very odd and disturbing. At the same time, my 92-year-old father has been suffering his own health problems. It is terrible to see my father struggle to get her to talk, say something, when she doesn’t have the energy. The other day, I recalled how my mother used to visit a woman named Mrs. Demopolis, a Greek immigrant, who made the best baklava(果仁饼)! She gave lessons on baking them to my mother. Also, my mom used to bake baklava often for a time and that was absolute pleasure. As I spoke of this over the phone, my silent mom cheered up and said how much she’d like to have one again. Now, they live in Florida and I live in Wales, UK with my husband and children, so I can’t go and bring her some baklava or even make some in her kitchen. But what I did suggest was that my father or sister should buy some baklava at a Greek Restaurant and I should do the same, and wouldn’t it be fun to eat our baklava at exactly the same time and so, be together sharing the moment and the pleasure? Both parents loved the idea and we decided to do it. It was lovely to hear a little happiness in her voice. Two days later we both had our baklava and shared the experience. It meant a lot to my parents, and to me, to do this. My mother said she wants to do this again, maybe with another food or even baklava again! Why not? And as she only keeps losing weight instead of gaining, it is good for her to find foods that appeal to her appetite. It is becoming harder to find ways to communicate over the phone, but this was at least a very good way to do so. And it was nice, as well, to remind us of pleasant memories of our past. 28. What has mainly worried the author lately? A. Her father is suffering from illness. B. Her mother is becoming less active. C. Her mother refuses to talk with her father. D. She has difficulty helping her sick parents. 29. What did the author suggest to please her mother? A. Mrs Demopolis should buy some baklava for her mother. B. Her mother should make some baklava in her kitchen. C. Her family should get together to comfort her mother. D. Her family should eat the same food at the same time separately. 30. What do we know about the author’s mother? A. She is getting thinner. B. She is still unconscious. C. She will only eat baklava. D. She has found her favourite foods. 31. What can be inferred from the text? A. The author’s father has lost ability to talk to his wife. B. The author’s mother learned to make baklava from a Greek immigrant. C. The author’s author and her parents live separately in different counties in the UK. D. The author’s mother had little excitement when hearing the suggestion. D Middle school graduation style may be a bit more casual than formal high school or college ceremonies, but the move from junior to senior high school is still an important occasion that can be celebrated in many ways. The decision whether students will wear caps and gowns(礼服)for middle school graduation is usually up to the individual school. Some feel that this is the perfect way to commemorate the special occasion, while others feel the cap and gown is unnecessary for a junior high ceremony. For those schools that choose not to use caps and gowns, it is typically suggested that students wear dress clothes for the occasion. Students may also be encouraged to dress for graduation in a uniform manner, such as white shirts and black pants or skirts, or educators may suggest dressing in the school colors. Schools that choose to have students wear academic regalia(制服)for the ceremony may choose to purchase gowns in a variety of sizes from a store such as Graduate Affairs, and then let students borrow them, and re-use them each year. Caps may be purchased by a Parent-Teacher Organization or by the individual graduates. Parents may choose to host open house or party when their child graduates from middle school. This is typically an informal affair, such as a barbeque or pool party, or simply appetizers or cake to honor the graduate. Simple backyard games such as volleyball, bocce ball, and Frisbee(飞盘) are a fun way to entertain young teens, tweens, and well-wishers. Other party games and a band might also be considerations for a large or more complicated gathering. Whether simple or complex, there are many ways to remember a graduation from middle school and make this time a special and wonderful one. Graduation events are perfect for highlighting(强调、突出) a student’s achievements during middle school and preparing for his or her future success. 32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “commemorate” in Paragraph 2? A. Pass. B. Celebrate. C. Ease. D. Avoid. 33. How do students often get the gowns for middle school graduation? A. They get them from the school. B. They purchase them from stores. C. They make them by themselves. D. They borrow them from the Graduate Affairs. 34. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs? A. Sports games will be free for students. B. Parents are less interested in the celebration. C. Students will exchange gifts at the celebration. D. There are various ways to honor the graduation. 35. What’s the author’s attitude to the celebration of middle school graduation? A. Doubtful. B. Ambiguous(不明确的). C. Supportive. D. Sympathetic 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What to Do When Someone Doesn’t Like Yon When someone tells me “I don’t care if people like me”, they are showing me the emotional wall they use to block the hurt of rejection. As humans are social animals, all of us care if people like us. Based on the need for social connection, your reactions to rejection and negative judgment can range from minor hurt to outbreaks of depression. 36 The first step to handle a negative situation is to recognize your reaction. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling?” 37 Any betrayal(背叛) or embarrassment in your heart? Identify what feeling has shown up in your body, so you can choose what to do next. 38 When you sense yourself shutting down or feeling defensive, ask yourself what the person actually meant to do to you. Did they truly mean to offend you, or make fun of you? Your brain works very hard to keep you safe, so it will judge a situation as threatening if there is any possibility of social harm. When our brains sense a possible threat, we react as if we were personally attacked. Take a breath to relieve the stress. 39 Finally, if you believe the person doesn’t like you, ask yourself if this matters. 40 If not, what can you do to release your need to be liked by this person? And, what can you do to stay neutral (中立的)and not return the dislike? The more you can come to accept others as who they are, the more you can move forward with your goals regardless of if someone likes you or not. A. If you can, look the person in his eyes. B. Do you feel any fear or anger in your head? C. Ask yourself what is true about the situation. D. Often people do not realize the impact of their words. E. Will the person’s judgment of you impact your work or life? F. The ability to let a show of dislike roll off your back is a learned skill. G. This will ground you in the present and take you out of your trembling mind. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 How would your childhood have been if you didn’t have a mom?
