In the morning, when everyone was enjoying holidays, earthquake happened. It was about 7.5 on the Richter scale. “There is nothing left between the sky and the earth any more. Everyone fell down.” said one of the villagers alive. “There is no water, no food and no one came to rescue.” Nobody died in Pakistan, a country next to India. The city of Lahore was lucky. In Lahore American School, all of the students were safe. They were on the field, so most children didn’t feel anything. The teachers in the second floor felt the earthquake. Although Mrs. Young was also on the second floor, she didn't feel anything. She didn't know what happened until a teacher told her about it. Those teachers on the other floors had different feelings. Mr. Emond, the maths teacher from Australia, said that when the earthquake started he thought there was something wrong with him. But then another teacher said that it was an earthquake. After those words Mr. Emond felt better. Mrs. David and Frost didn’t feel anything, either. My mother didn’t feel anything. She didn’t even know that it was an earthquake till she saw a shaking light. My father saw the computer shaking and then he looked out of the window and saw many people going out. 21. We learnt that ________from the sentence “There is nothing left between the sky and the earth any more”. A. India is a large country B. Indian had nothing after the earthquake C. there is no tall building in India D. the earthquake in India was serious 23. The city of Lahore is in ________. A. India B. America C. Australia D. Pakistan 24. Which of the following is true? A. I was with my parents when the earthquake happened. B. The earthquake in Lahore wasn't serious. C. The teachers in Lahore American School all felt the earthquake. D. My parents didn't know the earthquake happened. B China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide. Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied(陪伴) my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck. I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive. 25.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today? A.Because they are traditional and safe. B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive. C.Because they are colorful and available. D.Because they are fast and environment friendly. 26.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended _______. A.to ride it for fun B.to use it for transport C.to experience local culture D.to improve his riding skills 27.How did the author feel about his street crossing? A.It was boring. B.It was difficult C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful. 28.Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience? A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills. B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding. C.The author was praised by the other bikers. D.The author took great pleasure in biking. C Reading makes you a smarter, better leader. But if you’ve been following the latest science, you’ll also know that studies have shown regularly picking up a book might increase your empathy (共鸣) and protect you from feeling lonely, hopeless or suffering from dementia (痴呆) in later life. But obviously, that’s not the end of the list. New research has discovered yet another benefit of being a reader who focuses one’s mind on reading. After following those surveyed based on more than 3,500 adults over age 50 for 12 years, the team from Yale University behind the research found that those who read books for 3.5 hours a week were 23 percent less likely to die. Reading for less than 3.5 hours a week lowered participants’ (参加者) risk of death by 17 percent. Put another way, picking up an interesting book could earn you about an extra two years. It’s worth noticing that the researchers were looking exactly at time spent in reading books, rather than newspapers, magazines, or online media, and that this difference is important for the observed advantages of reading. “We found that reading books provided a greater advantage than reading newspapers or magazines,” said Avni Bavishi of the Yale School of Public Health. “This effect is likely because books attract the readers’ mind more — providing more cognitive (认知的) advantages, and therefore increasing the lifespan (寿命). In short, deep slow reading rather than reading quickly and carelessly is best.” So how long should you be reading for, and what sort of titles should you pick up? While more reading seems to be better, the researchers suggest that anything more than 30 minutes a day will be likely to do good to you. As for what exactly to read, the researchers can’t yet offer much advice beyond making time for actual books, though they pointed out this was a promising way to future research. 29.What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the first paragraph? A.To tell the importance of modern science. B.To explain the reasons for forming good habits. C.To show the benefits of reading. D.To list some painful sufferings. 30.What is the finding of the research of Yale University? A.Reading can build one’s confidence. B.Reading might make one feel safe. C.Reading should be done regularly. D.Reading could help one live longer. 31.Why is it better to read books instead of newspapers or magazines? A.It improves the readers’ abilities to know about things. B.It helps the readers to get more interested in the stories. C.It makes the readers think of their own past experiences. D.It offers the readers different practical skills of reading. 32.What will the future research focus on? A.Reading methods. B. Reading materials. C. Reading abilities. D. Reading purposes. D According to researchers, money can buy happiness, but only if you spend it on someone else. Spending as little as $5 a day on someone else could significantly bring you happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School found. Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably (适度地) happier when they spent money on others--even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier. “We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn,” said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia. They asked their 600 volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to charity. “Regardless of how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not,” Dunn said in a statement. Dunn’s team also surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit-sharing bonus of between $3,000 and $8,000. “Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro-social (有益社会的) spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science. They gave their volunteers $5 or $20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it. “These findings suggest that very minor alterations in spending allocations (分配) --as little as $5--may be enough to produce real gains in happiness on a given day,” Dunn said. 33.The 16 employees mentioned in the passage _________. A. were given clear instructions on how to spend the bonus B. had more happiness than the size of the bonus itself C. experienced greater happiness after receiving their bonus D. felt happier after they contributed much of the bonus to charities 34.Dunn’s statement suggested that ________. A. those who spent money on others felt happier no matter how much they earned B. those who spent more money on themselves felt happier C. people thought spending money could make themselves happier D. the money spent was as important as the money earned 35.The best title of this passage is ________. A. Experiment on Money Spending B. Devoting Your Money to Charities C. Spending Money on Others Makes One Happier D. Bonus and Pro-social Spending 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Five steps to better handwriting Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? 36 Here are five steps that really work! Get a great grasp Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 37 Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers. Let the lines be your guide Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡). 38 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one. Slow down If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters. Lower the pressure (压力) 39 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly. 40 Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better. A. Ask for more advice B. Play games C. So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”. D. You’ve been writing since you were a little kid. E. Some kids press down really hard when they write. F. The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb. G. I hope everything will be fine with you in the future. Yours, Li Hua 听力原文: Text 1 W: Ann looks rather upset these days. Do you know what happened to her? M: Yeah, she failed math, and she must be worried about the results of her other exams, too. Text 2 M: You’ve been doing well with your diet, Diane. I’m proud of you. You never eat junk food anymore. W: I decided to follow your advice. I used to order delivery like most people in the office, but you inspired me to eat healthier meals. Text 3 M: It’s very cold in here. I’m going to turn the heater on to warm this place up a little. W: Why do you think I’m drinking hot chocolate? Here, take this blanket. The heater isn’t working right now. Text 4 W: Are you still thinking of going into journalism right away, or are you going to do some traveling instead? M: I’m getting started on my degree in the fall. I want to continue my education right after we finish high school. Text 5 W: You see this painting? It looks like a five-year-old painted it. M: It’s not very complex, I agree. It could use a little more color, too. Text 6 M: Wow! Nice place! I’ve never been to this part of town before. W: Thanks. This area’s called the East End. It isn’t very central, but I chose it because I could afford more space here. M: Yeah, you have a whole extra room! W: I know! I use it for work. M: I thought you worked in an office downtown. W: My company lets me work one day a week from home. M: Lucky! You’ve got a great boss and a great apartment. I’m so happy for you! Let’s celebrate! Let me take you to dinner. Text 7 W: Jason just emailed me. He’s going to be a little late for the teachers’ meeting this afternoon. That shouldn’t be a problem, though. At least you and I will be there on time, right? George? Hey, George, what’s wrong? M: Sorry. I’m just really concerned about my brother. He was supposed to come over to my house for dinner last night, but he never showed up. W: How often do you see each other? M: Once a week. We always have dinner on Wednesdays. He hasn’t missed one in over a year. W: Did you try calling him? M: Yes, and I left him a voicemail. He doesn’t have a cell phone, so I can’t send him a text. W: I’m sure he’s fine. Sometimes things come up at the last minute. Your brother sounds like a very responsible person, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about. M: OK, you’re probably right. Thanks. Text 8 M: I’ve noticed that you have been having trouble in one of your classes. Is there anything I can do to help? W: Well, Mr. Hobart, I’m struggling to keep up with my math homework. I’m also studying history and chemistry for my other midterms, and math just doesn’t come easy for me. M: That’s normal. I wasn’t the greatest math student when I was young. You do have some choices, though. W: Like what? M: One of them is to take an afterschool class with Mr. Jennings. He’s in charge of the math department. W: I’ve heard of that. The problem is that I have volleyball practice on Tuesdays and Fridays. It’s really important to me. M: I see. The other choice is to find a tutor. We have a number of students from our Gifted Program who tutor various subjects for extra credit. It’s during the lunch hour. W: That would be great. When can I do that? M: Every Monday and Thursday. Go see Mrs. Lee, and she’ll sign you up. Text 9 M: I saw you on the news! You’re a hero! Come on, tell me all the details. W: Well, I was watching the pool from my chair, like I always do. There was a group of kids taking diving lessons in the deep end. M: Go on… W: I guess one of the students hit their head on the diving board, because I saw that someone was sinking to the bottom of the pool. M: So, what did you do next? W: I jumped in the pool after their instructor jumped in and brought the kid back to the surface. It was a young girl, and she had swallowed a lot of water. M: Wow. Did you give her mouth-to-mouth? W: Of course. Then I told one of the kids to call for an ambulance. M: Quick thinking! W: The girl coughed the water up almost immediately, and just like that, it was over. We cleaned the wound and bandaged it up, and the emergency services arrived twenty minutes later. M: How was she? W: She had no memory of the past ten minutes. She wanted to go back in the pool. She didn’t even know why her parents were crying. M: She must have been in shock. Text 10 Hi, students! This is Ashley Jacobs, your student government president. I have some important information for everyone about activities on campus this year. I promise that there will be something fun for everyone to do. Do you like sports? I know everyone is a fan of our football team. And now there are two new teams at school this year. We have added a baseball team and a swim team. Or do you enjoy creative activities? Student government created an art club and a music club for people with artistic abilities. Both of these groups have events all year long. The art club hosts painting nights and trips to the local museum, and the music club goes to see shows at the concert hall. And don’t forget about the school newspaper for all the writers out there! We pass out the paper every week for free on campus. Read it to keep up with all of the school news and activities that I announced. I strongly recommend that you join a student organization. It is an easy way to make good friends and have fun. Please consider joining one of these groups today. 查看更多
