She can make nice cakes for special occasions, such as weddings. I spent a week last summer helping her in the shop. Making a nice cake is harder than I thought it would be. I practised for hours in Aunt Cindy's shop. I made little colored dots (圆点) on a ‎ piece of wax paper (蜡纸). Unluckily, I could not get the dots to be the same shape or size. I decided to take a break from making the dots, so I helped move cakes. However, that was not easy for me, either. I dropped a cake when trying to take it out of the freezer (冰箱) by myself. Luckily one of Aunt Cindy's assistants (助手) was there. He saved the cake from hitting the floor. It takes a whole team to make a huge cake. That's one of the most important things I learned. Each person on the team has to be great at his or her job. Aunt Cindy designs the cakes on paper, Larry does the mixing and baking, and assistants carve and put frosting on the cakes. Aunt Cindy and Larry do most of the decorating while the assistants help make small parts like flowers and figures. Building a big cake is like playing a team sport. If one person doesn't do his or her job well, the whole team pays for that. Even though I was not much help to my aunt, I'm glad I spent the week in Aunt Cindy’s shop. Designing cakes takes more than just baking skills. It takes art and painting skills too. Now when I see a really nice cake, I don't think of eating it first. Instead, I look at it and wonder how many hours it took to make. 21. What does the underlined word "occasions" mean in this passage? A. events B. needs C. months D. ideas 22.Why did the writer take a break from putting colored dots on wax paper? A. Because she practised for hours and became bored. B. Because she could not make the dots good enough for a cake.‎ C. Because Aunt Cindy did not want her to make any more dots.‎ D. Because Aunt Cindy wanted her to help somewhere else.‎ ‎23. Who designs the cakes on paper? A. Aunt Cindy. B. Larry. C. Assistants D. The writer. 24. What was the main reason the writer was glad to have spent a week in her aunt's shop? A. She got to practise making coloured dots.‎ B. She learned the importance of teamwork.‎ C. She got to take a cake out of the freezer.‎ D. She learned art and painting skills.‎ B Just now, my little sister told me that they had a discussion about life now and then in class. She thought life was a lot better. When she asked me for my opinion, I didn't know what to say. It's true that life is easier today than in the past. We can do many more things people couldn't do in the past. Now we can just sit in the car and drive somewhere fantastic. In the past, people travelled either on foot or on horseback. Now we can buy almost everything we want in stores and supermarkets. In the past, people would feel happy as long as they had enough food and water. Now people live longer and healthier. In the past, few people knew how to deal with ordinary diseases. And now we can travel the world. In the past, travelling to other continents was impossible for ordinary people. Some people even didn't know the existence of other continents. ‎ ‎ However, life today is difficult at the same time. We want to look good. We try to be perfect. We want to know what others think of us. And the pace of modern life is so fast that we are becoming busier and busier! We are busy making money. And we are busy spending money. However, we never feel that life is good enough. We are so busy that we don't have time for our family members and friends, not to mention our hobbies. Is life today better or worse? It's hard to say, isn't it?‎ ‎25. What does the writer's little sister probably do? ‎ A. A pilot. B. A doctor. C. A student. D. A manager.‎ ‎26. What was probably the topic for the discussion? ‎ A. Is life today better or worse?‎ B. Are people as busy as before? ‎ C. Do people work as hard as before?‎ D. Is life today easier or more difficult? 27. What's the main idea of the second paragraph? ‎ A. Life is easier today. ‎ B. Transport is easier today.‎ C. Travel is easier today.‎ D. People live longer today. ‎ ‎28. From the third paragraph, we can infer that the writer thinks it's________for us to slow down. ‎ A silly B. difficult C.easy D. important C ‎2016 Calendar Kids Art Contest ‎ We’ll select 13 gifted artists and print their winning artwork in our 2017 calendar (日历). Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send orders to machines.‎ Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, showed a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.‎ In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.‎ ‎“Our brain has billions of nerve cells(神经细胞). These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outside world and also to control devices.”‎ The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This cap picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and gives orders to the wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to orders from the brain.‎ Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple orders. “The practical ‎ possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”‎ He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.‎ ‎32. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory?‎ A. By controlling his muscles. B. By talking to the machine.‎ C. By moving his hand. D. By using his mind.‎ ‎33. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5?‎ A. Scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair. B. Computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair.‎ C. Scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair. D. Cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair.‎ ‎34. The team will test with real patients to__________ .‎ A. make profits from them B. prove the technology useful to them C. make them live longer D. learn about their physical condition ‎35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?‎ A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center B. New Findings About How the Human Brain Works C. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled D. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries 第二节 根据对话内容,从对话后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项多余选项。(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ Bullies(欺凌) come in all shapes and sizes.
