The last three of the school’s 22 classrooms switched from seated desks to standing desks. “It’s now the first all-standing school,” Juliet Starrett told TFK. She started the group Stand Up Kids. Her goal is to have every U.S. public school kid using a standing desk within the next10 years. Starrett's daughters—Georgia, 10, and Caroline, 7—attend Vallecito. They are thrilled with their desks. “You feel happier, you're less tired, and you're more active,” Georgia says. Some of the desks have wheels and fidget bars. The bars let kids move in a way that doesn't disturb the class. Wheels allow the desks to be moved easily. The desks also adjust to different heights. Kids take breaks by sitting on the floor or on stools. There is the trend of designing things to make them easy and safe to use. According to Mark Benden, director of the Texas A&M Center, standing workers are more focused and healthier. He says his research shows that kids using standing desks are more engaged and burn more calories . In December, researchers in New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom released similar findings. But not everyone is convinced standing is better than sitting. Some parents and teachers worry that kids will get tired and that standing for long periods of time may be harmful. And standing desks are more expensive. Benden says both sitting and standing desks can cause problems if they are not the proper height. “Our message should not be ‘Sit less, stand more,'” he says, “but ‘Sit less, move more.'” 56. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Why standing desks are used. B. Where standing desks are used. C. How standing desks are used. D. Who use standing desks. 57. Mark Benden's research shows that kids using standing desks _______. A. feel more tired B. are more focused C. get better scores D. tend to eat more 58. Some parents and teachers worry that using standing desks may______ . A. disturb the kids in class B. leave the classroom noisy C. harm the students' health D. increase the teachers' workload B In English the sky is blue, and the grass is green. But in Vietnamese there is just one color category for both sky and grass: xanh. For decades cognitive (认知) scientists have pointed to such examples as evidence that language largely determined how we see color. But new research with four to six month-old babies indicates that long before we learn language, we see up to five basic categories of color --- a finding that suggests a stronger biological element to perceive (感知) color than previously thought. The study, published recently in the Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences USA, tested the color-discrimination abilities of more than 170 British babies. Researchers at the University of Sussex in England measured how long babies spent staring at color swatches(色块), a system known as looking time. First babies were showed one swatch repeatedly until their looking time decreased --- a sign they had grown bored with it. Then the researchers showed them a different sample and noted their reaction. Longer looking times were explained to mean the babies considered the second sample to be a new color. Their increasing responses showed that they distinguished among five colors: red, green, blue, purple, yellow. The finding “suggest you come by nature to make color distinction, but given your culture and language, certain distinctions may or may not be used.” explains lead author Alice Skelton, a doctoral student at Sussex. The study systematically explored babies’ color perception, revealing how we perceive colors before we have the words to describe them, says Angela M. Brown, an experimental psychologist at the Ohio State University’s College of Optometry, who was not involved with the new research, The results add a new challenge to the long nature-versus-nurture debate and the so-called Sapir ---Whorf hypothesis (假设) --- the idea that the way we see the world is shaped by language. In future work, Skelton and her colleagues are interested in testing babies from other cultures. “The way language and culture interact is a really interesting question,” she says. “We don’t yet know the exact systems, but we do know how we start off.” 59. What’s the finding of the new research? A. It clarifies what makes babies perceive colors. B. It proves human color recognition is inborn. C. It finds how many colors babies can perceive. D. It shows the colors culture is shaped by language. 60. According to the new research, we can learn that ________. A. swatches affect babies in memory and attention B. longer looking times are based on the psychology C. researchers determine babies’ color perception D. babies can tell the differences of some colors 61. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Rainbow in the Baby’s World B. A Journey to the World of Colors C. A New Challenge: Language vs. Culture D. Different Babies, Different Color Perception C Competition is an ideology(意识形态)that spreads all over our society and misleads our thinking. But it means no profits for anybody, no meaningful differentiation, and a struggle for survival. We advocate competition, see it as necessary, and set its laws; and as a result, we trap ourselves within it---the more we compete, the less we gain. Our educational system both drive and reflects our craze for competition. Grads alone are precise measurement of each student’s competitiveness; pupils with the highest marks receive status and credits. And it gets worse as students rise to higher levels of the tournament. Higher education is the place where people who had big plans in high school get stuck in fierce competition with equally smart peers over conventional(传统的)careers like management consulting and investment banking. For the privilege of being turning into conformists(顺从者), students(or their families)pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in rapidly rising tuition.. Why are we doing this to ourselves? I wish I had asked myself when I was younger. My path was so tracked that in my 8th-grade yearbook, one of my friends predicted—accurately—that four years later I would enter Stanford. And I enrolled at Stanford Law School, where I competed even harder for the standard badges(徽章)of success. The highest prize in a law student’s world in unambiguous(不清楚): the Supreme Court clerkship. I was so close to winning this last competition. If only I got the clerkship, I thought, I would be set for life. But I didn’t. At the time, I was frustrated. In 2004, after I had built and sold PayPal, I ran into an old friend who had helped me prepare my failed clerkship applications. We hadn’t spoken in nearly a decade. His first words to me were not “Hi Peter” or “How are you doing?” But rather, “So, aren’t you glad you didn’t get that clerkship?” Because if I hadn’t lost that last competition, we both knew that I never would have left the track laid down since middle school. Had I actually clerked on the Supreme Court, I probably would have spent my entire career taking depositions(证词)or drafting other people’s business deals instead of creating anything new. It’s hard to say how much would be different, but the opportunity costs were enormous. Looking back at my ambition to become a lawyer, it looks less like a plan for the future and more like an excuse for the present. It was a way to explain to anyone who would ask –to my parents, to my peers, and most of all to myself—that there was no need to worry. I was perfectly on track. But it turned out that my biggest problem was taking the track without thinking really hard about where it was going. 62. Students compete at school because______. A. they are assessed by grades B. they are under peer pressure C. they want to find a secure job D. the tuition increases quickly 63. We can learn from paragraph 3 that the writer______. A. didn’t have a clear plan for future B. did badly in study in the 8th grade C. wasn’t a capable students in college D. didn’t want to obtain the clerkship 64. The underlined sentence “the opportunity costs were enormous” (in paragraph 4)shows the writer_____. A. is unsure whether his choice is correct B. regrets failing clerkship applications C. is happy about not getting the clerkship D. thinks he could have had a better career 65. The writer shares his life story mainly to argue that______. A. people shouldn’t support competition B. grades cannot reflect students ability C. failure can be a good thing something D. we shouldn’t following other people blindly D There is no doubt that the United States has entered a brand new age, because Donald Trump, the country’s 45th president, is very different from any president before him. Unlike Hillary Clinton, his opponent, and most former US presidents, who entered the election after years of being politicians, Trump, 70, was a New York real estate businessman. And he was not a presidential candidate who worked hard to keep a perfect public image of a man who was always caring, fair and wise. Instead, Trump is famous for being bad-tempered, arrogant(傲慢的) and hateful toward disagree(意见不同的人). He also hates immigrants, both from Latin America and the Middle East. This has caused a dangerous division in the country—a country made up of many various races. But to his supporters, the fact that Trump is not a typical politician is actually one of his advantages. His habit of never hiding his opinions is also considered by many to be a sign that he is not a hypocrite like many politicians are. “We have seen our country take a downturn in the eyes of the world. We need to go in a different direction, ” Binyamin Weiss, 39, a man from Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune. “Trump’s not a politician... I like that he is not always politically correct and speaks his mind. It gives me the feeling that what you see is what you get. You may not like it, but you know what it is.” But interestingly, many who elected Trump actually followed the “lesser of two evils” principle—one that people use when faced with picking from two unpleasant options—simply because they didn’t think Clinton was a better choice. “He’s the candidate I disagree less with, ” Jack, 20, a student at Norwestern University, told the Chicago Tribune. “I don’t think I’d say Donald Trump is going to be the best president ever, but I did think he’d be better than Hillary Clinton.” It’s true that the US is entering a new age. It’s just not clear yet what kind of age it’s going to be. 66. Trump is not like most typical politicians for the following reasons except that_____ A. he was elected because his supporters voted for him B. he didn’t try to keep a perfect public image as a candidate. C. he gained popularity by his bad attitudes towards dissidents. D. he is not always politically correct and speaks his mind. 67. The underlined words “a hypocrite” is closely related in meaning to _____. A. a shy person B. a handsome person C. a dishonest person D. a caring person 68. Where can we put the following paragraph? “But no matter how people feel about him, Trump is going to take office as the US president on Jan 20, 2017.” A. Between paragraph 3 and paragraph 4. B. Between paragraph 4 and paragraph 5. C. Between paragraph 6 and paragraph 7 D. Between paragraph 8 and paragraph 9 69. According to the passage, many Americans elected Trump because_____. A. they considered Trump to be a successful businessman B. they expected a change and hoped US would become better C. they thought that Trump’s personality was suitable for it D. they thought that Trump was more caring than Hillary Clinton. 70. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. It reports on people’s different views on Trump’s victory. B. It explores the character of the newly-elected president Trump. C. It predicts what changes Trump will bring to the US. D. It analyzes the reasons for Trump’s victory in the election. 第二卷(两部分,共35分) 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be so successful in life? Everything flows just right for them, the great job, great salary, perfect love, and ideal life. One reason for success is the ability to make correct choices and decisions that lead to positive outcomes. It’s based on power of understanding things immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning or study. This ability is intuition(直觉)and highly successful people enjoy a higher degree of intuition than the average person. Successful people combine all they have learned together with what they sense with their intuition. Everybody is intuitive, but not everybody trust their intuition when it comes to making decisions. Most people don’t even believe they have intuition, so, it doesn’t even cross their minds to use it for problem solving. Even today, there are those who are afraid of their clairvoyant(有透视力的)abilities. They have many misconceptions about it, thinking it’s taboo. Others believe they have it, have had experiences with it, but never knew it could be a valuable toll for problem solving. Intuition is actually a skill that can be developed and applied effectively for improving all areas of life. It is not a “gift” that only a few have. In fact, everyone has some degree of intuition. Your intuition has probably been a guiding force for you all of your life by having provided you with information that help you reach positive outcomes. This type of information tends to come from hunches, inspirational thoughts, dreams, or visions. It can, coincidentally, come from others or from your inner voice. Often, it’s a very strong feeling deep in the pit(凹处)of your stomach, or your heart. No matter how the information comes to you, when applied, the outcome is usually positive. Intuition is like reading. It’s a skill that can be developed through time. No one is born knowing how to read; yet almost everyone has the potential of learning how to read. As time went by, the more we read the more skillful we became at reading. With intuition, the more you understand, and use your intuition, the better it develops. Some people seem to have more intuition than others. It’s probably because they had positive experiences with it as they were growing up, and are now more comfortable with using it. The Value of Intuition What is the (71)_____between intuition and success? Intuition is an ability to know something quickly without needing to(72)___about it or learn it by using reason. (73)____of one’s learned knowledge with what one gets from intuition leads to success. How much do people know about intuition? Not all people will use their intuition to(74)____a choice or judgment. Most people are not (75)_____of their intuition. It is misunderstood as something that we should (76)____using. Some people fail to see its(77)____to them when dealing with a problem. How does intuition function? It(78)____you with needed information from somewhere inside your body. Once the information is put into(79)_____, a wonderful effect may be produced. It becomes(80)______on condition that you understand it better and use it more. 第五部分单词拼写(共10小题;每小题0.5分,满分5分) 81. Formal dress is not required at this party----you may come in c________ clothes. 82. Just outside the door, some people are eagerly watching her, hoping to make friends with her. This picture reminds me of many young people who are computer addicts. They lose themselves in the virtual world and if it continues, they will eventually be cut off from reality. There is no doubt that the virtual world can be exciting, but that’s not the reason for us to go too far. Too much time and energy devoted to the Internet can lead to a disaster, mentally and physically. The real world that we live in is what counts. As for myself, I’ll devote myself to worthwhile things in real life, from making friends to my studies. Only in this way can I make my life full and valuable.查看更多
