It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.‎ Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year. During the previous year Rita had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita would be given the best job.‎ But there was a big surprise. Each child received a normal job. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita felt disappointed. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. Even her father became very angry with the teacher and he encouraged Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. ‎ However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest. Rita started investigating all about her little ant and gave the ant the best food, and it grew quite a bit bigger.‎ One day, a man, who looked very important, came into their classroom and declared, “Your class has been chosen to accompany me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rain forest, where we will investigate all kinds of insects. Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant.”‎ That day the school was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And many children learnt that to be given the most important task you have to know how to be responsible even in what are the smallest tasks.‎ ‎24. What does the underlined sentence mean?‎ A. Each child got an important job.‎ B. Each child got an interesting job.‎ C. The most responsible student got the job of least interest.‎ D. We can infer that the man who made the declaration is a _____.‎ A. hunter B. biologist C. director D. principal ‎27. What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A. Never complain about life.‎ B. Small tasks can lead to fortunes.‎ C. Men are best known by their friends.‎ D. Responsibility and intelligence bring good luck.‎ C Why do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what ‎ effect does your personality have on your longevity? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100. ‎ ‎ The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times. ‎ ‎ Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways. ‎ ‎ Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should fight to be as outgoing as possible. ‎ ‎ Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger. ‎ ‎ Personality isn’t destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health. ‎ ‎28. The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is _____. ‎ A. to see whether people’s personality affects their life span B. to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their health C. to investigate the role of exercise in living a long life D. to examine all the factors contributing to longevity ‎29. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?‎ A. They have a good understanding of evolution. ‎ B. They are better at negotiating an agreement. ‎ C. They are more likely to get over hardship.‎ D. They generally appear more resourceful.‎ ‎30. What does the recent study of Norwegian mothers show?‎ A. People with unhealthy eating habits are likely to die soon.‎ B. Mothers’ influence on children may last longer than fathers’.‎ C. Children’s personality characteristics are invariably determined by their mothers.‎ D. Mothers’ negative personality characteristics may affect their children’s life spans. ‎ ‎31. What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?‎ A. Health is in large part related to one’s lifestyle. ‎ B. Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.‎ C. Longevity results from a combination of mental and physical health.‎ D. Anxiety and depression more often than not cut short one’s life span.‎ D Culture can affect not just language and customs, but also how people experience the world on surprisingly basic levels.‎ Researchers, with the help of brain scans, have uncovered shocking differences in perception(感知)between Westerners and Asians, what they see when they look at a city street, for example, or even how they perceive a simple line in a square, according to findings published in a leading science journal.‎ In western countries, culture makes people think of themselves as highly independent individuals. When looking at scenes, Westerners tend to focus more on ‎ central objects than on their surroundings. East Asian cultures, however, emphasize inter-dependence. When Easterners look at a scene, they tend to focus on surroundings as well as the object. ‎ Using an experiment involving two tasks, Dr Hedden asked subjects to look at a line simply to estimate its length, a task that is played to American strengths. In another, they estimated the line’s length relative to the size of a square, an easier task for the Asians.‎ The level of brain activity, by tracking blood flow, was then measured by Brain Scanners. The experiment found that although there was no difference in performance, and the tasks were very easy, the levels of activity in the subjects’ brains were different. For the Americans, areas linked to attention lit up more, when they worked on the task they tended to find more difficult — estimating the line’s size relative to the square. For the Asians, the attention areas lit up more during the harder task also — estimating the line’s length without comparing it to the square. The findings are a reflection of more than ten years of previous experimental research into East-West differences. ‎ In one study, for instance, researchers offered people a choice among five pens; four red and one green. Easterners were more likely to choose a red pen while Westerners were more likely to choose the green one.‎ Culture is not affecting how you see the world, but how you choose to understand and internalize(使内化)it.‎ But such habits can be changed. Some psychological studies suggest that when an Easterner goes to the West or vice versa, habits of thought and perception also begin to change. Such research gives us clues on how our brain works and is hopeful for us to develop programs to improve our memory, memory techniques and enhance and accelerate our learning skills.‎ ‎32. According to the passage, Chinese people are most likely to _____.‎ A. more emphasize independent thinking ‎ B. focus on the context as well as the object ‎ C. always focus more on their surroundings D. think of Westerners as highly independent units ‎33. We know from the passage that people’s brains will be more active when _____.‎ A. the task is much easier B. the blood flow is tracked C. people begin to choose colors D. the task is more difficult ‎34. What does Dr Hedden's experiment in Paragraph 4-5 indicate?‎ A. People's perception of the world can be changed.‎ B. Americans are better at calculating than the Asians.‎ C. Easterners and Westerners perceive the world differently.‎ D. Culture has a great impact on the way people talk and behave.‎ ‎35. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.‎ A. Easterners prefer collectivism to individualism B. East Asian cultures lay more emphasis on independence C. it took over ten years to find out how to improve our brainpower D. Americans will change their habits of perception when they’re in Britain 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Parents Model Healthy Eating ‎ It should come as no surprise that the more stressed parents are at work, the greater the burden on their family is. ____36____ After all, the more time parents spend working, the less time and energy they have to plan and prepare healthful meals.‎ For years, most studies have focused on the role of working mothers while fathers were ignored. They didn’t look at the family as a whole, ____37____, adds a new wrinkle to the relationship between work stress and family nutrition.‎ Moms’ work related stress is still a central factor in how well families eat because they typically do most of the food shopping and cooking. ____38____ The study found that when mom or dad experience high levels of work related stress, their families are eating one-and-a-half fewer family meals per week, and the parents ‎ themselves report eating fewer fruits and vegetables, more fast food, and are less likely to eat breakfast regularly.‎ It’s worth noting that the study looked mainly at low income families who belonged to ethnic or minority groups. ____39____ But the implications are wide ranging.‎ ‎____40____ Teaching kids, especially teenagers, to help with grocery shopping and to cook actual meals, instead of just putting a frozen pizza in the microwave, could be an important piece of the puzzle in helping families improves their eating habits.‎ A. and at the role of fathers in particular ‎ B. But dad’s work related stress has a large impact, too.‎ C. Yet, the kids’ stress may influence the families’ nutrition, too. ‎ D. So the findings don’t necessarily apply directly to other types of families.‎ E. When it comes to family nutrition, the entire family plays a role even kids.‎ F.
