Parochial and Private Schools History Session B ‎ I was born in Bunkie, Louisiana in 1951 to a strong woman named Rowena. My mother was very knowledgeable about plants because she was raised on a farm in Mansura, Louisiana. My father was away at work most of the time being a lineman for the county. We knew him as the breadwinner of the family and the one Mom threatened us with if we ever misbehave.‎ ‎ I watched and helped my mother when I was young and learned quite a bit about plants of all types. She shared with me the gifts that some plants Possessed: gifts of healing, pest control and other amazing things they can do. One fond memory is the patch(小块土地) of marigolds(万寿菊) my mother always planted months before she planted her tomatoes. She was told by her mother that marigold roots had a magical way of pulling bad things out of the soil so when you cleared them, roots and all, from that area, the ground would be cleared of bad “dirt bugs(虫子)” and ready for a plentiful tomato harvest. Mother did not know the science behind what she was doing. She simply trusted the age-old wisdom of her ancestors. Needless to say, she produced so many tomatoes, some of which we gave away.‎ ‎ Scientifically, marigolds are an effective crop for trapping microscopic nematodes(线虫) in their roots when planted thickly in the tomato patch before tomato season. The most important step when using marigolds in this way is to completely remove marigolds including their root systems, bag them and throw them away. Don't pile up these plants in the tomato field. Remember the marigold roots have effectively trapped the nematodes or the “dirt bugs”. Over a short period these nematodes will die. This process should allow a great harvest of tomato plants.‎ ‎24. As a kid, the author learned about plants A. from his father B. from his mother ‎ C. by reading books D. through school classes ‎25. What special gift do marigolds have?‎ A. they can kill dirt bugs. B. They can heal up slowly.‎ C. Their roots can trap dirt bugs. D. Their flowers can keep pests away.‎ ‎26. What is the last paragraph mainly about?‎ A. How to plant marigolds. B. The process of growing vegetables.‎ C. How to protect marigolds from pests. ‎ D. The science behind what Rowena was doing.‎ ‎27. Which can be the best title for the text?‎ A. The interest my family shared B. How my mother influenced me C. Why my mother was the breadwinner D. The secret of growing healthy tomatoes C Educating girls and young women is a necessary act for a peaceful and poverty-free world. Until we give them equal access to a good quality education, the world will continue to suffer from the serious consequences of child marriage, disease, and inequalities.‎ Education is linked to the age at which women marry and have children. In sub-Saharan Africa and in South and West Asia, child marriage affects one in eight girls; one in seven gives birth by the age of 17. Education can give these girls a say in their life choices—by giving them the confidence to speak up for their rights, and to demand the opportunity to continue their studies.‎ Studies show that if all girls in sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia had primary education, there would be 14 percent fewer child marriages. If all girls received secondary education, 64 percent fewer girls would be locked into marriage at an age when they should still be in school.‎ Moreover, education is closely linked to health. There is strong evidence that educated girls are far more likely to be able to protect their children from preventable diseases, and to avoid malnutrition(营养不良)in their children’s early years. Malnutrition is not only about food: it starts with poverty, which can be avoided if women receive the education they need to earn a living. When a young woman becomes a wage-earner(挣工资的人) for her family, she has a better likelihood of taking effective action to get rid of poverty. ‎ Providing girls with a quality education also equips them with the confidence to challenge the inequalities that still exist for girls and women worldwide. Consider Mariam Khalique, a teacher in Pakistan who has used education to build her female students’confidence and to encourage them to stand up for their rights. One of her pupils was the young education activist Malala Yousafzai, whose global advocacy work is proof of the transformative power of quality schooling.‎ Educating girls and young women is still one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. However, we must remember that education transforms lives.‎ ‎28.What purpose do the figures in Paragraph 3 serve?‎ A. To encourage more girls to take over their lives.‎ B. To show education can prevent child marriage.‎ C. To describe the unhappiness of child marriage.‎ D. To prove more girls are receiving education.‎ ‎29.What does the author mean by “education is closely linked to health” in Paragraph 4?‎ A. Malnourished kids should receive better education.‎ B. Education lets kids know how to prevent diseases.‎ C. Educated mothers can make their kids healthier.‎ D. Healthy girls are likely to get more education.‎ ‎30.What can we learn about Khalique?‎ A. She was taught by Yousafzai.‎ B. She is a fighter for female rights.‎ C. She has created a new teaching method.‎ D. She offers quality schooling worldwide.‎ ‎31.Which of the following shows the structure of the text?‎ D ‎ It can be truly terrifying to fall through ice on a frozen lake, but if you remain calm, it can save your life. Most people don t realize that you have more time than you think. This is due to the concept of body temperature and how your body deals with the shocking cold that immediately covers the body.‎ As you first hit the freezing water, you will almost immediately breathe quickly. It is important that you remember to get control of your breathing and not to move around. It can help to remember the “1-10-1 principle.” This means that it takes about one minute to gain control of your breathing, and then you have 10 minutes to move before you get too cold. The final one is to remind you that it will take one hour before you become unconscious. Take that first minute and fully focus on your breathing. Slow it down, and then look around to see if you can locate the thickest area of ice. When you locate the ice, stretch your arms over the surface, and then begin to flutter-kick (上下打水) until your body becomes horizontal with the surface. Kick hard and use your arms and hands to climb out of the water. ‎ It is possible that you can live for several hours after passing out if you can get out of the freezing water. This, however, does require some planning. You only have about 10 minutes after falling in before your muscles and nerves become too cold to work. If you feel too weak to get out, place your arms over the surface of the ice and remain still. The point is to encourage your coat to freeze to the ice so that if you lose consciousness, you will keep your head out of ice. Additionally, you will remain visible for rescue, even if you pass out.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph I refer to?‎ A. Keeping calm B. Pushing through ice C. Having enough time D. Dealing with the cold ‎34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?‎ A. How to use the first minute. B. How to locate the thickest ice.‎ C How to control the floating ice. D. How to pull yourself onto the ice.‎ ‎35. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?‎ A. Take off your coat. B. Do some workouts. ‎ C. Keep your head above water. D. Relax your muscles and nerves. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Friendship, do you value?‎ Friendship is a gift of God. But it may be taken for granted in some cases and not valued. 36 Say one has no child even after many years of marriage and the other has many children, more than they can manage. What do you think? Will the couple with many children value the children as much as the couple which has none? Everything is relative in life. We value what we don’t have and give less value to what is freely available to us. 37 ‎ Why should we value friendships? What qualities does a good friend bring to our relationship that makes the friendship so valuable? Let us examine some of these. ‎ Judgment -A good friend is rarely judgmental. We can, be open in our behavior with our good friends because, we know that they will not judge us. 38 With other people our actions and behavior are always calculated and guarded and that takes away lots of pleasure from our life. ‎ Share sorrow and losses -A friend can be depended upon to share all our problems and sorrows. 39 Once I saw the image of a man left alone in a village after an earthquake. The whole village got killed except this man. With whom, will this man share his sorrow? A friend gives us this gift.‎ Hope -During our times of trouble, only a friend comes forward and gives us encouragement and hope. 40 ‎ A. This is no small gift of friendship B. Friendship is one such relationship.‎ C. It is similar to a case of two couples D. Some of us are blessed with good friends.‎ E. We can enjoy this freedom only with friends.‎ F. With that inspiration, we regain confidence in ourselves.‎ G.
