They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters (仓鼠) to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary Water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water. Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience ( 神 经 系 统 科 学 ) at Ohio Stale University. He says animals that slept in blue and while light appeared to be the most depressed “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they dill show depressive sign while if they were in the dim red light, they did not.” Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive (感光的) cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep—wake cycle. He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and while light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness. 24. Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because, ________. A. they are easy to observe and study B. they are similar to humans in dealing with colors C. they are sensitive to colors like human beings D. they are active at night and sleep during the day 25. C Several years ago 1 was undergoing chemotherapy ( 化 疗 ) for breast cancer. On my off-chemo weeks I would go out for a walk around my neighborhood, with a cap on to protect my chemo-bald head from the sun. One afternoon I was walking past a house several doors down from mine: the family who lived there were people with whom I had a “Hi, how are you doing?” kind of acquaintance. But we never really introduced ourselves to each other. This day the man was out working in his yard and as I walked by, he came out to the street and stopped me, saying “I want you to know that my wife and I understand .hat you are going through some kind of illness and that we are praying for you.” I was so touched, and tears came to my eyes, I thanked him for his kind words and then introduced myself. His name was Melvin and his wife was Michelle. A few days later, they stopped by my house and gave me a little basket of inspirational books along with some tea. Again I thanked them for their kindness. Melvin then said that if there was anything they could do to help me, please let them know. I timidly said, “Well, I’d like someone to cut the back of my yard. It’s got quite overgrown and I’m not able to do anything with it right now.” He said that he would be happy to do so. It was a Friday and he came down with his riding mower (割草机) and cut not only the back part, but the front as well and even the edging (边缘) too! One of his neighbor, also came along to help! When I went out to thank him, he said that whenever he cut his own yard, he would be sure to come down and cut mine too. True to his word, he did so every 2-3 weeks until I was done with the chemo and had got back enough strength to start doing it myself again. What a gift they were during this difficult time in my life, and how grateful I am for their constant kindness. 28. Why did Melvin stop the author? A. To offer the author some books and tea. B. To pray for the author. C. To inform the author about the illness. D. To express care and comfort to the author. 29. What made the author make a self-introduction? A. The author’s illness. B. Melvin’s kindness. C. Michelle’s prayer. D. Their living near. 30. What can we learn about Melvin? A. He knew the author quite well. B. He thought highly of the author. C. He cut the whole yard for the author. D. He helped cut the yard all the time. 31. What’s the best title for the text? A. Help from an Unexpected Source B. A Small Gift of Together C. Sharing More Than We Can Offer D. Following Melvin to Act in Kindness D People in possession of a dog were less likely to have or die from cardiovascular (心血管的) disease during the 12 years covered by the study, according to the study published in Scientific Reports. “The impact was greatest for single people,” said Mubanga, an author of the paper from the university’s Department of Medical Sciences and the Science for Life Laboratory. “Dog ownership was especially significant as a protective factor in persons living alone, which is a group previously reported to be at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and death.” said Mubanga. “Perhaps a dog may stand in as an important family member in the single households.” The researchers examined seven national databases in Sweden, including two that track dog ownership, and focused on people aged 40 to 80. Single dog-owning adults who lived alone wire Ⅱ percent less likely to develop heart disease afterwards and 33 percent less likely to die than non-dug owners, the analysis found. “It’s not clear exactly how the dogs helped prevent heart disease, or whether getting one directly led to better health,” warned Tove Fall, the senior author of the paper and associate professor in epidemiology at Uppsala University. “It’s possible that clog owners are healthier and more active before they get a dog companion,” she said. “We know that dog owners in general have a higher level of physical activity, which could be one explanation for the observed results,” said Fall. “Other explanations include an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome (细胞微生物)in the owner.” 32. What’s the effect of having a dog companion according to the study? A. It may put single people at higher risk of cardiovascular disease. B. It may reduce the risk of people developing cardiovascular disease. C. It completely changes the physical and menial condition of the dog owners. D. It makes no difference to the health of those who live with their family. 33. What can we learn from paragraph 3? A. Tracking dog ownership is necessary to cure heart disease. B. People aged 40 to 80 are most likely to catch a heart disease. C. Single dog-owning adults may die earlier without their dogs. D. Dog ownership can prevent single dog-owning adults from heart disease. 34. We can infer from the text that Tove Fall ________. A. knows the way dogs help prevent heart disease B. believes a dog companion will surely contribute to better health C. thinks bacterial microbiome will greatly benefit dog owners D. agrees owning a dog may increase the level of physical activity. 35.What’s the text mainly about? As we know, language learning is never an easy task, but needs painstaking efforts and patience. Personally, I think you’d better pay close attention to the formal use of Chinese words and expressions, which really count. Meanwhile, you may as well watch more Chinese materials as much as you can afford. More importantly you should learn from the mistakes that you have made. Anyhow, you’ve already made great progress in your learning of Chinese. A good luck next time. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
