I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work. I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work. At one time, I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We, together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions(情感) she felt. We knew we could arrange something, so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit. The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is nonclinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor's surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often. It's great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a resolution(解决) for people who come in. It's good to have the team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer. 4.What can we infer about the author? A.He is a retired doctor. B.He is volunteering in a hospital. C.He is a counselor in cancer. D.He has fought against cancer before. 5.Why did the lady feel upset? A.Because she was affected by cancer. B.Because her husband suffered from cancer. C.Because she didn't know how to treat cancer. D.Because she had a poor relation with her husband. 6.What do we know about the volunteers? A.They do well in teamwork. B.They receive medical training. C.They all used to be helped. D.They often meet unusual things. 7.Why does the author write this text? A.To call on readers to do voluntary work. B.To show us how to help those in trouble. C.To share his experiences as a volunteer. D.To teach us how to take care of cancer patients. C [2020·湖南六校联考] Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, it also increases pollution and wastes energy and water. Only 23% of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho. It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either peel off the membrane(薄膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. One problem the scientists have run into is how to ship lots of Ooho bubbles without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have attempted to package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is targeting large outdoor events such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting events, where tons of plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention. The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials needed to produce Ooho; they have recently applied for a patent for their new advancement. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London, San Francisco, Boston, at conferences, festivals, and so on. Ooho is catching many people's attention and has raised over $1 million and gained 1,000 investors in only three days. It is mostly being sold at events at the moment to keep the consumer's interest when the production machine is running. It is quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of the future. 8.How is most plastic dealt with in America? A.It's sold. B.It's recycled. C.It's buried. D.It's wasted. 9.Why did the team invent Ooho? A.To make a profit for a company. B.To protect the environment. C.To make people eat as they drink. D.To reduce the cost of the plastic bottle. 10.What can we infer about Ooho from the text? A.It is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts. B.It has become popular since it began to be sold. C.It might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles. D.It cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology. 11.What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph? A.Ooho is to be a success in the future. B.Ooho is being supported by smart people. C.Ooho is taking the place of plastic bottles now. D.Ooho is being produced to attract more investors. D [2020·山西八校第一次联考] If you're anything like most working Americans, you probably make a beeline for the coffee machine as soon as you wake up in the morning. In fact, over 85 percent of Americans consume caffeine(咖啡因) regularly-and coffee is the preferred medium. As for the perfect time for your Joe? There's a “sweet spot” that could maximize your caffeine kick, and surprisingly enough, it's not the first thing in the morning. Although having your coffee right away may cause you to think quickly in the morning, that feeling quickly crashes just a few hours later. “Definitely limit coffee when you first wake up” , Laura Cipullo, registered dietitian and author of Women's Health Body Clock Diet, told CNBC. To get the most benefit, experts recommend drinking your coffee in the midmorning or early afternoon, instead. Getting caffeine about three to four hours after you get out of bed will do the trick, too. Why? At those times in the day, your body is low on cortisol(皮质醇)-the stress hormone that makes you think quickly-and desperately needs a good pickmeup. Of course, if you can't function without your morning coffee, then by all means, continue drinking! Not everyone agrees with the midmorning theory, anyway. Registered dietitiannutritionist Melanie Dellinges believes when you consume caffeine is not in the least important; it's how much caffeine you consume that matters the most. She recommends limiting your intake to two to four cups a day. Regardless of when you decide to drink your coffee, try to avoid drinking coffee after 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Research shows that caffeine can disturb your sleep up to six hours after you consume it. 12.Which word can best replace the underlined “Joe” in paragraph 1? A.routine B.company C.breakfast D.coffee 13.When does the author suggest drinking coffee? A.Late in the evening. B.3 to 4 hours after getting up. C.Early in the morning. D.2 or 3 hours later after getting up. 14.What does Melanie Dellinges regard as the most important? A.The amount of caffeine intake. B.The time to consume caffeine. C.The way one takes in caffeine. D.The midmorning theory on coffee. 15.What is the best title for this text? A.How much coffee to drink B.Why we ought to drink coffee C.Don't drink coffee in the morning D.The best time to drink coffee 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余选项。 [2020·重庆市七校联考] It is known to us all that thinking is a good thing. I'd barely had time to arrange myself in the passenger seat, my foot already blown up like a balloon when she came out with it, exactly like I knew she would. First, she patted my leg. Then she just couldn't help herself, “Every cloud has a silver lining, you know, sweetheart.” “Mom, I appreciate the thought, but I'm not ready to look on the bright side of this.” We hadn't even left the school parking lot yet. On the farthest side of the field, I could see my teammates doing sprint training, Coach Zito striding back toward them. He'd mercifully helped me to the car in silence. Unlike Mom, he knew when it was best to say nothing. As Mom started the engine, I imagined my teammates cooling down without me while they listened to Coach Zito's pep talk. And next Thursday, they would go to practice without me, and the Thursday after that... When I had fallen and twisted my ankle, I'd cried from the pain, but I was crying out of selfpity in the car. Hours and hours of training, and then this. I told myself there was a glimmer (微光) of hope that everything would turn out okay, and that I'd make it to the track meet next month, but I knew it was just that: a glimmer. The tears fell hot and fast. Mom gave me a weak smile. “It'll be okay, Casey.” I suspected this was another version of the silverlining thing, but I felt so miserable that I let it pass. We finally arrived at the hospital. Doctor Van gently moved my ankle around a bit before carefully lowering it. I nervously asked how long it would be before I could run. “Four weeks maybe, possibly five,” he replied. “And even then, you'll need to take it easy for a while. Is that possible?” he asked with a smile. What a miracle!” My coach Zito looked at me in disbelief. To tell them everything was okay, I kicked, jumped and ran in front of them. Seeing this, they all burst out laughing. Later, I went to practice with them and participated in the track meet. From then on, whenever I encountered difficulties, Mom's encouraging words “Every cloud has a silver lining” always rang in my ears.查看更多
