Now for over a year, the girls have been working after school and over the winter and spring breaks to complete their project. “They have this amazing drive that I've never seen before, ” said Violet Mardirosian, a math teacher at San Fernando High. “I thought at the beginning that maybe some of them would give up, saying 'I didn't expect this much work,' but they don't. They're just working hard and they're not giving up.”‎ Living in a low-income community (社区), the girls have seen the problem of homelessness ‎ first-hand, which is why they chose that population to create a product for. Many of them are also from immigrant families and hope the solar-powered shelter might help refugees(难民). Seventeen-year-old Maggie Mejia said that while she had no engineering experience, the girls figured out as a team how to create the prototype (雏形), using how-to videos and books that taught them how to code. But the most important lesson she's learned over the course of the project isn't technical. “I've learned a lot about helping others, helping the community and showing a better world to other people,” she said.‎ The girls have been invited to MIT to show their invention. Mardirosian says all the participating students have expressed interest in going into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields and that students from lower grades are already expressing interest in being involved next year. She says, “Many of them didn't think about engineering before. They thought maybe they're not made out to be an engineer. But working together, now they realize they're all needed in this field. Everyone has found their importance in this picture.”‎ ‎24.Why did Mardirosian think some girls would quit the subject?‎ A. It was not practical in real life.‎ B. It demanded a lot of time and energy.‎ C. It was not supported by their math teacher.‎ D. It required a lot of money and expert knowledge.‎ ‎25.Why did the girls decide to create a solar-powered shelter?‎ A. To save energy. B. To win a scholarship.‎ C. To help the homeless. D. To be admitted to MIT.‎ ‎26.According to Maggie, what is the most valuable lesson she has learned from the project?‎ A. How to code. B. The power of teamwork.‎ C. The way to teach herself. D. How to make the world a better place.‎ ‎27.What does Mardirosian think of the project?‎ A. It taught girls to be independent. B. It should be continued next year.‎ C. It inspired girls' interest in STEM. D. It showed the importance of engineering.‎ C Google’s new artificial intelligence can defeat both humans and other AIs. Fortunately, the only war zone where it fights and wins is the ancient board game Go(围棋).‎ AlphaGo Zero, developed by Google—owned DeepMind, is the latest AI program. The original AlphaGo defeated Go master Lee Sedol last year, and Alphago Master, an updated version, went on to win 60 games against top human players. What’s different about AlphaGo Zero is that it became potentially the world’s best Go player with any help from humans.‎ The program AlphaGo Zero started off knowing only the basic rules and then played millions of games against itself in just a few days. After almost five million games played against itself, AlphaGo Zero could outplay humans and the original AlphaGo. After 40 days, it was capable of beating AlphaGo Master.‎ The program learned the strategies humans accumulated over thousands of years in a matter of weeks and also developed nontraditional strategies and moves that beat the techniques of the human masters, leaving them astonished. “At each stage of the game, it seems to gain a bit here and lose a bit there, but somehow it ends up slightly ahead, as if by magic,” said Andrew Jackson of the American Go Association.‎ DeepMind says it has plans for the technology behind AlphaGo Zero beyond just defeating all over an ancient game board. “In the end, we want to apply these breakthroughs to helping solve all sorts of pressing real world problems like designing new materials,” said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, in a statement.‎ That sounds great, but just as a precaution, let’s take the advice of Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking and keep any super—fast learning AI away from the nuclear launch codes for now.‎ ‎28.Which was probably the earliest Al program to play Go according to the text’?‎ A. DeepMind. B. AlphaGo Zero. C. AlphaGo Master. D. AlphaGo.‎ ‎29.What makes AlphaGo Zero different from its other versions?‎ A. It beats AlphaGo Master.‎ B. It teaches itself.‎ C. It knows the basic rules of Go.‎ D. It plays against itself for a long time.‎ ‎30.What’s DeepMind’s plan for the AI technology?‎ A. To design a new version.‎ B. To win all the ancient board games.‎ C. To inspire the world with solutions to global issues.‎ D. To beat human beings all over the world.‎ ‎31.How does the author feel about AI?‎ A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Encouraging.‎ D These days I am on my very best behavior whenever I leave the house. If I am wearing pantyhose (连裤袜), I double-check to ensure there is no hole on it. I drive thoughtfully as if I’m being tested for a license. I won’t even allow myself to frown when another driver is blocking my path.‎ My kids have noticed my fear in public. “Why are you looking all around Mum?’’ they asked.‎ ‎“You can’t be too careful,” I said. “Every single person around us is hiding one of cellphone cameras. They are glad to catch somebody doing something stupid or embarrassing. Then they’ll put it on YouTube and a million people will see. I’m not taking any chances.”‎ ‎“But I don’t think anyone is interested in filming you putting on your lipstick for a YouTube video,” answered one kid.‎ ‎“Oh, really? Don’t count me out so quickly,” I said.‎ Actually, in some cases, I am all for public shaming. For example, I admire the cleverness of the man who put up a website where he posts photos of cars and license numbers of people who occupy two parking spots. And I take secret pleasure in photos of politicians with their fingers in their noses. Throwing light on bad behavior can rouse the sleepy conscience (良知).‎ But what about the poor guy who has already had a bad day at work and then loses his temper at a rude store clerk? What about the woman whose only crime is a terrible judgment error at the hairdresser? Do they deserve to have their images uploaded onto the Internet for all the world to see?‎ None of this is new, of course. Allen Funt pioneered the art of catching people during unguarded moments back in the 1940s with “Candid Camera”. But there’s a difference. On “Candid Camera”, people are set up in staged situations, such as riding in an elevator that goes sideways. And they must give permission before they enjoy their fifteen minutes of fame. Now we are a nation of Allen Funts. This can’t be a good thing.‎ ‎32.What is the author like?‎ A. She is poor at driving.‎ B. She is a very fashionable dresser.‎ C. She is very cautious about her behavior.‎ D. She is sick to death of others' rudeness.‎ ‎33.What is the author truly afraid of?‎ A. Making mistakes before her kids.‎ B. Being filmed while doing something stupid.‎ C. Getting involved in a quarrel with others.‎ D. Watching videos on YouTube.‎ ‎34.From the text, the author thinks it good .‎ A. to keep the poor’s mistakes secret.‎ B. to download images from the Internet.‎ C. to take pleasure in making funny videos.‎ D. to make the public aware of bad behavior.‎ ‎35.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?‎ A. People can be easily caught in embarrassing moments.‎ B. We are permitted to upload images onto the Internet.‎ C. It was once a fashion to film people in unguarded moments.‎ D. Cellphones make it convenient to catch illegal behavior.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项 ‎ Competition is all around us and it makes the strong stronger and the weak weaker. It can also teach us how to survive in a fast-paced and stressful world. 36. How many of us have seen young boys weeping because their teams didn’t win inter-school tournament? How many of us have seen young teenagers cheat just to win? 37. So it’s important to develop healthy competition among children.‎ When it comes to encouraging healthy competition among children, the first thing to do is set goals for them to stick to. 38.‎ Since children may be easily affected by wrong ideas from popular media and the Internet, it’s up to you to develop the right kind of spirit in them. Team spirit will help them grow into human ‎ beings who aren’t easily annoyed by small losses or too excited by victories. 39. So give them examples where family members refused to cheat to win.‎ ‎40. When they take an exam, don’t ask about how much they expect to score; instead, ask what they wrote about. If your son played a cricket match at school, don’t ask him whether his team won or lost; ask him how many runs he scored and encourage him to score higher next time instead. When you let your children know that you’re more interested in how they performed rather than whether they lost or won, they will surely try to better themselves.‎ A. However, you mustn’t push them too hard and burden them with too high a goal B. We should also encourage healthy competition among children C. These are the effects of unhealthy competition D. In addition, they may also not want to adopt just any method to win, like cheating or lying E. Care more about children’s performance rather than the results in a sports match F. However, children can be hit by competition G.
