B As shocking as the idea of baby birds growing up in a cigarette-filled home sounds, a new study suggests that some birds may benefit from putting the stuff from cigarette butts(烟蒂)into their nests. The nicotine(尼古丁)remaining in smoked filters(滤嘴)may serve as a natural insecticide(杀虫剂), driving harmful insects away from the nests and the baby birds living within. Tobacco plants produce nicotine because it defends against insects that would otherwise eat the plants. The butts are undoubtedly smelly. But birds are actually quite fond of smelly chemicals, such as those found in aromatic(芳香的)plants. Some nest-building species regularly fill their nests with fresh aromatics, possibly because the chemicals are good for the immune system or the development of the chicks. Alternatively, the plant chemicals might act as insecticides. In the study, researchers at the Autonomous University of Tlaxcala in Mexico set up heat traps, which attract harmful insects, in 55 nests around Mexico City. Some traps were lined with the stuff in smoked cigarette filters. The others were lined with the stuff from unsmoked cigarette filters, which did not contain nicotine and other smoking by-products. Whether the nest held eggs, chicks or nothing, the unsmoked cigarette traps collected more harmful insects, suggesting that it is the chemicals that drove harmful insects away. In a second experiment, the researchers collected 28 house sparrow nests and 29 house finch(朱雀)nests from Mexico City immediately after the chicks flew out for food. They found that the more smoked filter stuff filled a nest, the fewer harmful insects it had. The missing piece of the puzzle is whether the reduced number of harmful insects in the nests actually provided any benefit to the chicks. It is also unclear if nicotine or another chemical found in cigarettes may have turned the harmful insects out of the nests. If the results hold, then this study is an example of wildlife adaptation to urbanization—or at least evidence that birds are smart and can still follow their noses in urban environments. 59. What may be the function of nicotine in cigarette butts for birds? A. To attract baby birds to stay in the nests. B. To provide building materials for bird nests. C. To protect the plants from being eaten by insects. D. To drive harmful insects away from bird nests. 60. What is the first experiment aimed at? A. Proving that heat traps attract harmful insects in Mexico City. B. Comparing smoked cigarette filters with unsmoked ones. C. Studying what it is that drives harmful insects away. D. Analyzing what is produced from smoked cigarette filters. 61. What can you infer from the passage? A. Some insects are afraid of smelly chemicals in aromatic plants. B. Nicotine is the only chemical that drivers harmful insects away. C. Birds tend to use insecticide to protect the baby birds. D. Unsmoked cigarette traps attract more harmful insects. 62. Where could you possibly see the passage? A. In an urbanization essay B. In a science report C. In a tobacco advertisement D. In an anti-smoking brochure. C Biologists believe that love is fundamentally a biological rather than a cultural construct, because the capacity for love is found in all human cultures and similar behavior is found in some other animals. In humans the purpose of all the desire is to focus attention on the raising of offspring. Children demand an unusual amount of parenting, and two parents are better than one. Love is a signal that both partners are committed, and makes it more likely that this commitment will continue as long as necessary for children to reach independence. But what does science have to say about the notion of love at first sight? In recent years the ability to watch the brain in action has offered a wealth of insight into the mechanics of love. Researchers have shown that when a person falls in love, a dozen different part of brain work together to release chemicals that trigger feelings of euphoria, bonding and excitement. It has also been shown that the unconditional love between a mother and a child is associated with activity in different regions of the brain from those associated with pair-bonding love. Passionate love is rooted in the reward circuitry of the brain—the same area that is active when humans feel a rush from cocaine. In fact, the desire, motivations and withdrawals involved in love have a great deal in common with addiction. Its most intense forms tend to be associated with the early stages of a relationship, which then give way to a calmer attachment form of love one feels with a long term partner. What all this means is that one special person can become chemically rewarding to the brain of another. Love at first sight, then, is only possible if the mechanism for generating long-term attachment can be triggered quickly. There are signs that it can be. One line of evidence is that people are able to decide within a second how attractive they find another person. This decision appears to be related to facial attractiveness, although men may favor women with waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7, no matter what their overall weight is. (This ratio may indicate a woman’s reproductive health.) Another piece of evidence comes from work by a psychologist at Ben-Gurion University, who found in a survey that a small percentage (11%) of people in long-term relationships said that they began with love at first sight. In other words, in some couples the initial favorable impressions of attractiveness triggered love which sustained a lengthy bond. It is also clear that some couples need to form their bonds over a longer period, and popular culture tells many tales of friends who become lovers. One might also assume that if a person is looking for a partner with traits that cannot be qualified instantly, such as compassion, intellect or a good sense of humor, then it would be hard to form a relationship on the basis of love at first sight. Those more concerned with visual appearances, though, might find this easier. So it appears that love at first sight exists, but is not a very common basis for long-term relationships. 63. When a person falls in love, _____________. A. he feels as if he were addicted to cocaine. B. he will be committed to the beloved as long as necessary. C. he will experience complex feelings brought on by different regions of his brain. D. he will experience a calmer attachment form of love before he feels the extreme love. 64. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. pair-bonding love comes from a long stable friendship. B. the mechanism for creating long-term attachment ensures love at first sight C. it is impossible for those ordinary-looking people to fall in love at first sight. D. men may be attracted by a girl whose figure suggests her admirable reproductive capacity. 65. The underlined word “traits” in the last paragraph probably means ______. A. characteristics B. something typical in your temper C. particular qualities in your personality D. attitudes that show your moral standards 66.Which of the following may be the best title of the passage? A. The stages of passionate love B. The science of love at first sight C. The biological construct of pair-bonding D. The mechanism for generating long-term love D Dad and I loved baseball and hated sleep. One midsummer dawn when I was nine, we drove to the local park with our baseballs, gloves, and Yankees caps. “If you thought night baseball was a thrill, just wait,” Dad told me. “Morning air carries the ball like you’ve never seen.” He was right. Our fastballs charged faster and landed more lightly. The echoes of our catches popped as the sun rose over the dew-sprinkled fields. The park was all ours for about two hours. Then a young mother pushed her stroller toward us. When she neared, Dad politely leaned over the stroller, waved, and gave the baby his best smile. The mother stared at him for a second, and then rushed away. Dad covered his mouth with his hand and walked to the car. “Let’s go, bud,” he said. “I’m not feeling well.” A month earlier, Bell’s palsy (贝尔氏神经麻痹) had struck Dad, paralyzing the right side of his face. It left him slurring words and with a droopy eyelid. He could hardly drink from a cup without spilling onto his shirt. And his smile, which once eased the pain of playground cuts and burst forth at the mention of Mick Jagger, Woody Allen, or his very own Yankees, was gone. As I slumped in the car, I began suspecting that our sunrise park visit wasn’t about watching daylight lift around us. This was his effort to avoid stares. It was a solemn drive home. After that day, Dad spent more time indoors. He left the shopping, driving, and Little League games to Mom. A freelance editor, he turned our dining room into his office and buried himself in manuscripts. He no longer wanted to play catch. At physical therapy, Dad obeyed the doctor: “Now smile as wide as you can. Now lift your right cheek with your hand. Now try to whistle.” Only the sound of blowing air came out. My earliest memories were of Dad whistling to Frank Sinatra or Bobby McFerrin. He always whistled. He had taught me to whistle too. Of the roughly 40,000 Americans suffering Bell’s palsy every year, most recover in several weeks. Other cases take a few months to heal. But after nine weeks of therapy, the doctor confessed she couldn’t help Dad. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” she told him after his final session. Then she handed him the bill. Dad coped through humor. He occasionally grabbed erasable markers and drew an even-sided wide smile across his face. Other times, he practiced his Elvis impersonation, joking that his curled lips allowed him to perfect his performance of “Hound Dog”. By the time I entered fourth grade that September, Dad could blink his right eye and speak clearly again. But his smile still hadn’t returned. So I made a secret vow: I would abstain from smiles of any kind. Nothing about fourth grade made this easy. Classmates were both old enough to laugh about pop culture and young enough to appreciate fart jokes. Kids called me Frowny the Dwarf. (I was three foot ten.) Teachers accompanied me into hallways, asking what was wrong. Breaking the promise I had made myself was tempting, but I couldn’t let Dad not smile alone. When I asked my PE coach, “What’s so great about smiling?” he made me do push-ups while the rest of the class played Wiffle ball. Then he called Dad. I never learned what they discussed. But when I got off the school bus that afternoon, I saw Dad waiting for me, holding our gloves and ball. For the first time in months, we got in the family car and went to the park for a catch. “It’s been too long,” he said. Roughly a half-dozen fathers and sons lined the field with gloved arms in the air. Dad couldn’t smile, but he beamed, and so did I. Sundown came quickly. The field’s white lights glowed, and everyone else left. But Dad and I threw everything from curve balls to folly floaters into the night. We had catching up to do. 67. Why did Father choose to play baseballs one summer dawn? A. They could perform better in the morning. B. He tried to escape others’ attention to his face. C. Morning air was more suitable for playing baseball. D. The park was empty and they could enjoy themselves. 68. The underlined phrase “abstain from” in Paragraph 16 is closest in meaning to ______. A. seek for B. recover from C. give up D. break into 69. Why did the father accompany his son to the park for a catch that night? A. He had made a complete recovery. B. He thought night baseball was a thrill. C. He intended his son to return to normal. D. He was instructed by the PE coach to do so. 70. What is the best title for the passage? A. Losing my father’s smile B. Making a hidden secret C. Playing baseball in the morning D. Recovering from a face illness 第II卷(客观题,共35分) 第一节:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分) 请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。 China is the top country of origin for international students in the USA, with more than 274,000 Chinese students reportedly accounting for 31 percent of all international students at USA universities. Many Chinese parents save up a lot of money for their children to purse an overseas education. Is it worth spending big to study abroad? You’re welcome to leave your views. Futsanglung (UK) Sadly too many Chinese parents think a foreign education is best for their kids and expense is no problem. I often feel this is a mistake as the education a Chinese child gets in a foreign country is very different to what they are used to and they often struggle. Hopefully this will change. Chinese universities will improve and more bright kids will study in their home land in the future. Arsa (Russia) I went to study abroad when I was 17. I went to UK from Russia. First year was a total waste. I was away from parental control for the first time and as it happens I met plenty of Russian students in my college and we spent most of our time shopping, hanging out at cafes and clubbing. We studied sometimes but it wasn’t until two years later that I realized that my English hadn’t improved. I had trouble understanding my lecturers and my assignments kept coming back with poor scores. I changed my mindset entirely and started studying hard. I stayed in UK for 10 years. It opened a lot of doors and introduced me to great people, so I’m all for studying abroad. But Chinese students do tend to stick together which does nothing for their English, or network building ─ biggest reason why you’d want to go abroad in the first place, besides getting a fancy certificate. Chuck14 (Canada) Here in Canada I work with Chinese students who come here to go to high school. My wife and I find homestays for these students and watch over them and their homestay families for the entire time they are here. The student is not prepared properly to go into a stranger’s home and struggle with language and cultural barriers. We work to make it as easy for the student and their family as much as we can. One thing we emphasize to each student is the enormous opportunity they have to be immersed into a native English speaker’s home. Many times the student will feel lost for a while and stay shut in their room usually qqing or skyping back home to their friends. We see this as normal behavior for a while at least. Some students have planned out their futures with education and experience from abroad to take back to China. Others do not, I’m afraid, and obviously the experience will do them no good for their future. Although it is natural for all Chinese students to hang out together, so many of them miss out on the English opportunity in their homestay. We also encourage our homestay families that they seize an opportunity to experience China through their student. The experience alone is valuable for any teenager growing up and so I think it should continue. Truth (US) There is a perception (or misconception) that American education is the best in the world. Chinese parents, who highly value education, therefore push their kids to American colleges. Increasingly, they are also sending their children overseas earlier, at junior or high school level. American education teaches critical thinking and creativity. Chinese education is based too much on memorization. This style of thinking, however popular, is not correct. The non-quantifiable forms of learning come from a student’s innate interest and appetite for the subject. Many great entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs never finished college. So much for the vaunted higher education. It was so crowded with people that it felt like the air conditioner wasn’t working. I was standing there looking around. Then, I saw an old lady get on the subway with a 7-year-old child who seemed to be her grandson. A warm-hearted gentleman generously offered his seat to the old lady. Instead of sitting down herself, however, the old lady called her grandson over and told him to sit. Sooner or later, children mature and step into the complicated world. Love is necessary in the early development of children, yet, to the disappointment of many, too much love definitely prevents children from learning the rules of the real world. Teaching the child about the rules of society within the family helps the child to achieve success later. It’s common in our country that parents or grandparents often spoil the kids. For example, parents or grandparents will buy shoes of famous brands to satisfy their needs, no matter how expensive they are. What’s worse, they provide kids with whatever they want and ask them to do nothing in return. When these spoiled children grow up, many of them may greatly disappoint their parents. Kids should go through hardships and do what they can to help their parents or other people. Only by doing so can they be independent and responsible.查看更多
