Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. The center studies human-computer interaction, or HCI, especially communications involving wireless devices. We spoke to Mr Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn’t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they had put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of “garbage in 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 2 garbage out”. Mr Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with many GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it’s going to the wrong place.” Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people’s cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.” Barry Brown: “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you’re doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong.” 2. What is the implication of the underlined part? A. GPS is just a garbage device. B. GPS will not correct human errors. 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 3 C. GPS adjusts your wrong destination. D. We all do it,we can't get by without it and by the time we reach old age, most of us have spent 20 years sleeping: Yet,nobody knows why we do it. Most scientists think that by resting our bodies,we allow time for essential maintenance(维 护)work to be done‘Any damage that there is can be put right more quickly if energy isn't being used up doing other things‘Injured animals certainly spend more time asleep than usual while their wounds are healing(愈合).And quite a few illnesses make us feel sleepy so our body can get on with curing us. Sleep is controlled by certain chemicals. They build up during the day, eventually reaching levels that make us tired. We can control the effects of these chemicals to some extent. For example, caffeine helps to keep us awake while alcohol and some medicines make us sleepy. By using electrodes, scientists are able to study what goes on in people's heads while they are sleeping. They have discovered that when we first drop off everything slows down. The heart beats more slowly and our breathing becomes shallow. After about 90 minutes our eyes start to twitch and we go into what is called REM sleep.REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and it's a sign that we've started to dream. You have dreams every night, even if you don't remember them. There are all sorts of theories about why we dream. One is that it gives the brain a chance to sort out 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 6 the day's activities, filling everything away in the right place. Another is that the brain gets bored while we're asleep and organizes its own entertainment-a sort of late-night cinema! A lot of people say they have to have eight hours’sleep every night while others seem to manage on a lot less. One thing is for sure,we all need some sleep and going without it can have some very strange effects. An American DJ,who stayed awake for 200 hours to raise money for charity, thought things were bursting into flames all around him after 120 hours without sleep. He survived the strange horrible period of time but was depressed for three months afterwards. Humans are unusual in the way they sleep. Most animals have a sleep during the day and tests have shown that a siesta can be beneficial for us too. It's even been recommended that airline pilots should have a nap during long flight s so that they are more alert (警觉的)for the tricky business of landing. So next time you nod off after Sunday lunch in front of the TV,don't feel embarrassed about it.Science, after all,is on your side. 63.The passage is probably from a A. lab report B. research paper C. science story D. drug instruction 64. Outdoor adventure is often just a few stops on the train - or a short drive- away from the annoying crowds. Here are a few favorites to get you going: Mount Hollywood Trail, Los Angeles It's not a skyscraper or a Ferris wheel, and there's no expensive restaurant up top. But if you want an absolutely unforgettable, no-admission-charged, 360-degree view of the entire Los Angeles region, it's yours. All you have to do is walk a little. One of the preferred exercise routes, the Mount Hollywood Trail, is easily accessed from the parking lot of the famous Griffith Observatory; you see what you get at the end of this steep 1.5-mile trail, which winds its way through the Griffith Park wilds up to the mountain's 1,640-foot peak. Southern Islands, Singapore Believe it or not, tightly packed Singapore does have plenty of open space left. There are actual trails right in the middle of everything, if you know where to look. But to really get away from it all, the Southern Islands, a small group of little green dots just off the city-state's southern shoreline, are just the thing. Lee Valley, London This East London river valley changed last summer, when anyone near a television got an eyeful of Olympic Park, built directly in the middle of the valley. Inside the park, beautifully landscaped sections quickly became a favorite relaxation spot for games goers. At present, you'll find miles of walking paths worth exploring. Most students still need that one-on-one, teacher-student relation-ship to learn and to succeed. Teenagers need instruction in English, math and history, but they also want personal advice and encouragement. Kids talk with me about their families, their weekend plans, their favorite TV shows and their relationship problems. This personal connection is the necessary link between teachers and students that no amount of technology can improve upon or replace. A few years ago, I had a student who was struggling with my class and with school in general. Although he was a humorous young man who liked to joke around, I knew his family life was far from ideal (理想的). Whenever I approached him about missing 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 12 homework or low test grades, he always had the same reply, “It doesn’t matter because I’m quitting school anyway.” Even though he always said this in a half joking way, I knew he needed to hear my different opinion and my value of a high school education” lecture. He needed to hear this speech from me. After he left my class, he struggled through the next two years of school. But, he did finally graduate because we kept telling him to hang in there (坚持下去). We’d cared about his finishing school. Recently, I saw this former student working at a local Italian restaurant. I told him again how proud I was of him. He said that he was hoping to go back to school to become a certified electrician I encouraged him to get that training.
