I was once invited to visit a witch doctor (巫医) in Zimbabwe. The friend who took me to visit the witch doctor was called Pleasure. When I asked Pleasure why he was going to the witch doctor,  he rubbed his stomach and said,  "I have been sick for three weeks."     Pleasure had already visited the clinic 60 kilometers away to see the "modern" doctors,  but he was still feeling ill and now seeking a traditional treatment. Knowing that foreigners liked to experience tribal customs,  Pleasure had thoughtfully invited me to visit the witch doctor with him.     Eventually we arrived and were led into a tiny hut where the dread﹣locked (有发辫的) witch doctor awaited us,  wearing a smart shirt,  a pink scarf,  a blue blanket and a strange smile. He sat down on the dirt floor,  back and legs straight,  ankles crossed. The smell of smoke filled the air,  and dust lay on an array of bottles and jars behind him. Then the consultation began. The witch doctor and Pleasure talked to each other in Shona with low,  urgent voices,  while I watched and listened,  but understood nothing. Then the witch doctor carefully unwrapped a paper parcel and took out some small bones. He cupped them in his hands,  shook them and dropped them deliberately. And then he shook his head and mumbled (咕哝) softly to himself.     Our meeting ended abruptly as the witch doctor waved goodbye. I was curious about what treatment the witch doctor had given to Pleasure. So I asked Pleasure. For Shona people,  it's rude to look someone straight in the eye but,  if Pleasure had not been Zimbabwean,  I'm sure he would have looked right at me as he showed the witch doctor's advice,  "He told me to keep taking the pills they gave me at the clinic." ‎ ‎(1)Why did the author visit the witch doctor with Pleasure?________‎ A.He was interested in local customs.‎ B.He had an upset stomach himself.‎ C.He had to support Pleasure on the trip..‎ D.He had been admiring the witch doctor.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(2)What did the author think about the witch doctor?________‎ A. Friendly. B. Greedy. C. Mysterious.. D. Humorous. ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)What can we learn from the text?________‎ A.The author learned a lot from the experience.‎ B.The author could understand the local culture.‎ C.It was useful to go to the witch doctor.‎ D.They might be fooled by the witch doctor.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎2.     Protecting wildlife and sensitive natural areas is hard enough as it is,  and it's not helping that every tourist wants to post a selfie (自拍) with a koala bear or dolphin. Now Instagram is making it harder to find such content. If you search for hashtags (主题标签) associated with pictures that could harm wildlife or the environment,  it will post a warning before letting you continue.     Now,  if you enter an associated word,  the app will throw a flag saying "Protect Wildlife on Instagram",  adding that "you are searching for a hashtag that may be associated with posts that encourage harmful behavior to animals or the environment". Only then can you see posts,  learn more or cancel the operation. The warning will appear for hundreds of hashtags,  both in English and the languages of Thailand,  Indonesia and other nations where wildlife tourism is getting worse. Instagram isn't saying which words will start the flags,  though,  as it wants users to discover them on their own.     The decision followed an investigation (调查)by National Geographic and World Animal Protection into wildlife tourism. The investigators discovered that animals were being captured (捕捉) illegally from rain forests and kept in cages,  then brought out for selfies with tourists not knowing their bad situation. World Animal Protection's Cassandra Koenen points out that the animals people most want to pet or hold,  like koalas,  really don't like being handled. And the problem is made worse because tourists are terrible at determining which attractions treat animals poorly.     Though Instagram's gesture doesn't seem like it'll be of great help,  Koenen believes that it will stop people that don't mean harm and just don't know better. "If someone's behavior is interrupted,  hopefully they'll think maybe they shouldn't just automatically like something or post something if Instagram is saying there's a problem with this photo, " she said. ‎ ‎(1)Which will most probably be interrupted on Instagram?________‎ A.Looking for posts about tourism.‎ B.Posting selfies on the website.‎ C.Entering words "photos of ‘pandas and me'"..‎ D.Searching for knowledge of animals.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(2)What can we conclude from Paragraph 3?________‎ A.It is dangerous to take photos with animals.‎ B.Wildlife tourism can make animals suffer.‎ C.Tourists treat animals from rain forests badly..‎ D.Wild animals dislike being touched at all.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)Why does Instagram make this gesture according to the last paragraph?________‎ A.To educate people on animal protection.‎ B.To stop people posting selfies online.‎ C.To solve people's problems when they post selfies.‎ D.To give people more knowledge about animals.‎ 第13页 共14页 ◎ 第14页 共14页 ‎ ‎ ‎3.     "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" ﹣ that is one of Elton John's most popular songs. But not every public figure seems to find it so tough to say that powerful five﹣ letter word.     In recent days public figures,  from politicians to stars,  have all publicly expressed ________. But with so much remorse,  how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression of remorse?      Specifically,  saying sorry should be a realization that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to make amends (弥补). "People want the response to be personal to them. They want to feel that they're being listened to and taken seriously, " says Martin Stone.     Firstly,  it is important to show that you understand. It is vital that any group or person making an apology understand the focus ﹣ is it sorry for the way it's acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do?      Watch out for the speed of response. The quicker the apology comes,  the better it indicates that the person making it has felt an immediate sense of guilt.     If sincere,  the person making the apology will be looking for clues (线索) to see ifhe or she is being understood,  such as eye contact and facial expressions. Performed apologies always have a sense of being "acted out",  and are often accompanied by too many unnatural gestures.     For a sincere apology,  it is also important to avoid promises that can't be kept. Don't say that you'll make sure that this will not happen again if you're not confident that it won't. It could come back to bite you. And do remember that the use of "but" can hugely change the tone(语气) of an apology. As Stone points out,  "I'm sorry but …" sounds like you are making excuses and aren't actually taking any form ofresponsibility. ‎ ‎(1)What is the purpose of the text?________‎ A.To discuss how to give a formal apology.‎ B.To explain what a good apology is.‎ C.To teach us how to tell if an apology is sincere..‎ D.To show why we should apologize in life.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(2)What does the underlined word "remorse" probably mean?________‎ A. Worry. B. Pain. C. Doubt.. D. Regret.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)Which of the following indicates it's a "performed" apology?________‎ A.Avoiding eye contact with the listener.‎ B.Swearing it won't happen again.‎ C.Paying attention to the listener's reaction..‎ D.Showing you understand his/her feelings.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(4)What is stressed in the last paragraph?________‎ A. The tone of voice. B. The attitude. C. The choice of language. D. The body language. ‎ 第二节 (满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Many of us can't sleep at night, watching the clock tick and panicking about tomorrow's tiredness. Here are several truths you should know. Controlled naps (小睡) help you get back your strength and energy again. If napping makes you more tired, you're not doing it right. (1)_______ A power nap of 5 to 20 minutes unloads the brain and can make you feel more recharged. (2)_______ Staying in bed longer than usual at the weekend can't make up for the losing sleep. Try to wake up at the same time every day, even at the weekend. This trains your body to use the time it has to sleep most efficiently. Don't ignore the effects of losing just one hour's sleep a night. Many people don't get the recommended six to nine hours' sleep a night. If you miss some sleep one night, you can catch up the next night with no problem. (3)_______ Exercise close to bedtime makes you relax. Research shows that exercise before bedtime doesn't cause sleep problems. (4)_______Indeed, people who exercise for at least 30 minutes before bedtime are the least likely to take sleep medicine. And time spent in the deeper stages of sleep increases after exercise. Gene determines your sleep. Sleep is like height, which is genetically determined.(5)_______You could be among the lucky few genuine short﹣sleepers, if you wake up without an alarm clock at the same time every day with only 4﹣5 hours' sleep. A.Wake up at the same time every day. B.Some sleep problems arise due to stress. C.It might even be beneficial in some cases. D.The more you sleep, the healthier you will become. E.So if your mum or dad is short sleepers, you may be too. F.However, you're in sleep debt after several nights of not sleeping enough.
