Many U. S. schools are most concerned about students performing well on required math and science tests. Because of this, administrators and teachers might rarely see the value of art-related museum trips. Jay Greene is a professor of education policy at the University of Arkansas. He and his research team are studying how attending cultural events help a student's - 24 - education, and he told the reporter, "We found that students who visited an art museum were more tolerant, more empathetic, and also learned a lot of content about the art they saw and developed stronger critical thinking skills about art.” Greene's researchers also examined how going to a live theater performance can affect students. Greene said that students who saw a live performance "experienced improvement in tolerance and empathy”, while those who watched a movie version of the same play did not experience the same results. The students who saw the live performance learned the story and related vocabulary better than those who watched the movie version, he said. "Our most surprising result is that we saw improvements in math and reading test score performance for students in Atlanta after they went on multiple enriching field trips." Greene says that the fact they did welt on the tests “suggests that motivation is a very important part of success in school”. This is true for students of all ages. Students' behavior in school also improved. Greene thinks part of that may be because they were doing something fun in school. “Because if the school doesn't do it for kids from more disadvantaged backgrounds, then it’s possible these kids won't get much exposure to the arts at all.” And that, he says, may hurt their future. Melissa Reyes is with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. She said that, in addition to their usual arts field trips, the museum also offers “STEM-based tours”. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math — areas of great concern to many schools. Reyes explained that these tours look at connections “between art and science, art and math, and art and architecture”. She said, “These experiences complement learning goals in both the arts and the STEM categories.” 4. From the first paragraph we know . A art-related museum trips are encouraged in the United States B. administrators and teachers care more about required math and science tests C. many children get their education in museum - 24 - D. administrators and teachers realize the impact of art on students 5. According to Jay Greene, visiting an art museum will benefit the students a lot except that . A. they may become more considerate B. they could know many about the art they saw C. they could develop skills about thinking and art D. they could have more empathy with people 6. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Going to a live theater performance can lead to a better learning than watching the movie version. B. Being fun was the reason why students’ behavior in school improved after museum activity. 7. What is the best title for the passage? A. Museums and Education B. Live Performance or Movie Version C. According to Statista, a German online portal for statistics; global tea production reached approximately 5.8 million tons in 2018. It has become the most consumed beverage in the world — after water, of course. In order to celebrate the popular drink, the United Nations General Assembly has designated May 21 as International Tea Day. According to the UN, tea is much more than just a hot drink. It's a big part of many cultures around the world. You probably know that people in China use top-grade tea to show respect when receiving important guests. Meanwhile, the British tradition of afternoon tea is an important part of that country's identity. Making Malaysia's pulled tea has become a sort of art form, where drinkers take pride in its entertainment aspects. As an - 24 - expression of Moroccan hospitality and tradition, mint tea — a mix of green tea, spearmint leaves and sugar — is served during gatherings and negotiations. Apart from its cultural significance, tea is also a medicine, used from ancient times to modem day. “Tea is cold and lowers the fire,” Chinese Ming Dynasty herbalist Li Shizhen once said. The health benefits of tea are still being discovered today: preventing heart disease, obesity and cancer have all been linked to drinking green tea, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the US. The mania for healthy tea products continues into a new decade as it's used in moisturizers, lip balms and other beauty products. Hot or cold, bagged or loose-leaf, tea is more than a drink — it's a social custom and also a magic medicine, a link to the past and a way of life. 8. Why did the author mention the two quotations in the first paragraph? A. For they are famous. B. To show the significance of tea. C. For enriching the readers’ knowledge. D. Tea has a long history in China. B. Tea has many health benefits. C. Tea is a big part of many cultures around the world. D. May 21 is celebrated as International Tea Day. B 9. C 10. D 11. 文章开篇点题,引用这两句话“Where there is tea, there's hope.”(有茶的地方就有希望)和“Firewood, rice, cooking oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are the seven necessities to begin a day.”(柴、米、食用油、盐、酱料、醋和茶是开始一天的七大必需品。) 根据第二段这句话“It has become the most consumed beverage in the world - after water, of course.”(茶已经成为世界上消耗最多的饮料,当然除了水以外)可知水是世界上消耗最大的。 根据画线词所在这一句 “it’s used in moisturizers, lip balms and other beauty products.” D Polar bears have captivated(迷住) humans since the beginning of recorded time. Writings dating back to 57 C. E. in ancient Rome describe flooded amphitheatres where polar bears and seals competed against each other ( not much of a fight, as it turns out). Kings of ancient Egypt and early Norway were the first to keep polar bears captive, and the fascination with them has held through the centuries. Ad campaigns all over the world feature polar bears to sell everything from bottled water to transportation systems to soda. A Coca-Cola ad campaign in the 1990s added "adorable" to the polar bear's image. The ads featured a clumsy, animated cub that bridged the natural wariness between polar bears and penguins to share a nice, cold bottle of Coke. Polar bears don't - 24 - actually have a natural affinity for penguins, as the two don't live in any of the same regions and never see each other. But still, cute is cute. Polar bears' shocking whiteness, ferocity and sheer size make them icons of purity and power. Males can grow up to 10 feet tall (3 meters) and weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms). A single bear can take on a 2,500-pound walrus, and hang on to the massive catch with 2-inch claws (5 centimeters). They walk hundreds of miles across ice sheets every winter, following their prey. In the Arctic, polar bears are at the top of the food chain, and it’s not just because of their size. They're so well-adapted to their environment that they experience no change in body temperature at minus 34 degrees Fahrenheit ( minus 37 Celsius). However, the incredible survival mechanisms that let them thrive in frigid winters may prove to be their undoing. Because of global warming, winters are getting less cold and polar bears are dying. Some scientists project that if climate trends continue, 30 percent of the current polar bear population will be wiped out by 2050. What’s life like for an animal that needs such extreme cold to survive? Let's head to the Arctic and see how polar bears live on the ice. 12. What does the underlined word in the first paragraph refer to? A. A place for fighting. B. A place for entertainment. C. A place for eating. D. A place for jogging. 13. Which of the followings about polar bears is NOT true? A. They have a close relationship with penguins. B. They are favored by ad campaigns. C They will walk hundreds of miles to follow their prey. D. They may be dying out due to warm weather. 14. Polar bears are at the top of the food chain in the Arctic mainly because their . A. large size B. adorable image C. good adaptability D. shocking whiteness 15. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph? - 24 - A. The current polar bear population will be wiped out by 2050. B. Polar bears can only live in frigid winters. C. Warm weather makes no sense to polar bears. D. Polar bears’ mechanism makes them live in any environment. 12. A 13. A 14. C 15. Over the past few weeks, we ___41___ (witness) the emergence of a previously unknown virus. Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with ___42___ (weak) health systems, ___43___ are ill-prepared to deal with it. We would have seen many more cases outside China by now — and probably deaths — ___46___ it were not for the government's efforts, and the progress ___47___ (make) to protect their own people and the people of the world. I also offer my profound respect and thanks to the thousands of brave health professionals and all frontline responders, who in the midst of the Spring Festival, are working 24/7 to treat ___48___ sick, save lives and bring this outbreak under control. Thanks to their efforts, the number of cases in the rest of the world so far has - 24 - remained ___49___ (relative) small. Now let's all act together ___50___ (limit) further spread. 41. have witnessed 42. weaker 43. which 44. measures 45. on 46. if 47. made 48. the 49. relatively 50. to limit 【解析】 【分析】 本文是篇发言稿,主要向中国政府以及奋斗在疫情一线的勇敢的医务人员和急救人员表达了感谢,同时也号召大家立刻行动起来控制病毒的传播. 由时间状语“over the past few weeks”可知应该用现在完成时。故填have witnessed。 由下一句“ 3 are ill-prepared to deal with it. 故填which。 take measures/take a measure意为“采取措施”。根据下文“despite the severe social and economic impact those measures are having 5 the Chinese people.” 有影响“have(an)impact on…” 故填on。 此句是虚拟语气,if it were not for… - 24 - (若不是,要不是)相当于without或but for。故填if。 故填made。 故填the。 故填to limit。 Dear Lucy, That I know is that you are interested in Chinese traditional opera but I have a piece of good news for you. “What I know is that”意为“我所知道的是”。故将that改为what。 - 24 - 2. 故将but改为and。 3. 此处的center前面提到的the youth center,表示特指,应该用the。故将A改为The。 5. 故将which改为that。 8. 故将in改为on。 10. 故删去you。 Dear Jim, - 24 - ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Jim, I’m more than pleased to have received your letter inviting me to your country and spend a wonderful holiday with you.But I’m terribly sorry that I’m not able to accept your invitation. I know such a good chance is it to experience the breath-taking view of your country that I can’t afford to miss it,but considering that my IELTS test is due in August,I have to stay at home preparing for it.Besides,on account of being occupied by classes and tests all my senior school years,I want to spend some time accompanying my parents before leaving for college. But on the other hand,we haven’t seen each other for more than one year and I do miss you so much,so if you could come to China for Spring Festival this winter holiday, then nothing could be better. Looking forward to your letter. I know such a good chance is it to experience the breath-taking view of your country that I can’t afford to miss it,这句话运用了such引导的倒装句来强调自己的情感。另外,作者使用了一些出彩的固定词组,如can’t afford to,on account of,more than,Looking forward to等,为文章添色不少。
