In 2010, Hagelin heard Jan Straley, a marine biologist, talk about the behavior of whales. Straley mentioned that whales often leap into the air, but nobody knew why.‎ The mystery interested Hagelin. So Hagelin asked Straley whether they might leap to smell the air—maybe to locate food or look for danger. Straley replied that it was an interesting idea but there wasn't much evidence that whales have a sense of smell. To investigate the idea further, the two scientists teamed up.‎ 9‎ In the summer of 2011,they set up a post on the coast of southern Alaska. The researchers spent hours monitoring the direction of the whales and of the wind. The whales headed into the wind half of the time. This didn't prove that whales leap to smell, but it suggested that it is possible.‎ Meanwhile, other researchers in Alaska were studying a region of the brain called the olfactory bulb(嗅觉球) in whales. Olfaction means the ability to smell. Humans also process smells in the olfactory bulb.‎ In identifying a scent, you might think the nose does all of the work. However, the major role of a nose is to draw chemicals on the air and pass them across sensing cells. As chemicals come into contact, they give signals that travel directly to the bulb and then in the brain for further interpretation.‎ The researchers discovered that the bulb in a whale was more complex than the one in a human. In whales, this smellprocessing center takes up a share of the brain six times larger than it does in humans.‎ The brain research suggests that whales probably can smell just as well as people—and possibly better than humans can. It is supposed that a good sense of smell could help them find food more easily.‎ However, Hagelin is not sure of that. Now he is planning a new study that will examine whether whales do use the sense of smell to find food.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文,主要谈论的是关于鲸鱼嗅觉的研究。 ‎ ‎4.Hagelin and Straley set up a post with the purpose of finding ________.‎ A.how whales look for food in groups B.whether whales can get out of danger C.how whales head into the wind D.whether whales leap to smell the air ‎[解析] 推理判断题。 Every day, dozens of boats filled with tourists go to watch the beautiful animals. Unfortunately, the engines of the boats make a lot of noise, and that may be causing problems for the whales, according to a report in the US science magazine Nature.‎ The whales travel in groups, and communicate with each other through sonic calls 9‎ ‎ that some scientists refer to as singing. The sounds of the boat engines may be creating too much background noise for the whales to be able to hear each other.‎ The researchers listened to recordings of whale calls made between 15 and 25 years ago, before whale watching became popular. These were compared to more recent recordings.‎ They found that the animals have started to sing for longer than they used to, like a person shouting to a friend across a noisy room.‎ It is believed that the whales are trying to communicate hunting or breeding information. Scientists said that, if this is prevented, the future of the world's whale population could be in danger.‎ ‎“Animals become slow in mind and repeat themselves in noisy areas,” said Volker Deecke, a Canadian biologist. “They have to say things twice or three times in order to be understood.”‎ The killer whales studied were living off the coast of northwestern America. The number of killer whales in this area has been falling for several years, but scientists are not sure why.‎ 语篇解读:本文首先介绍了观鲸船所产生的噪音对虎鲸的交流造成了困难,然后又介绍了观鲸旅游的盛行和虎鲸的交流方式。‎ ‎8.The passage mainly tells us ________.‎ A.the problems of whale watching B.how killer whales communicate with each other C.the reduced population of killer whales caused by whale watching D.hearing problems of the killer whales caused by whale watching ‎[解析] 主旨大意题。概括文章第一段可得出答案。观鲸船的噪音给虎鲸的信息交流造成了困难。‎ ‎[答案] D ‎9.Now in a noisy background, the killer whales have to ________.‎ A.sing in a louder voice B.sing longer C.travel in smaller groups D.get nearer to each other ‎[解析] 细节理解题。由第五段可知,因为受噪音干扰,现在虎鲸“唱”的时间比原来长。‎ ‎[答案] B 9‎ ‎10.Scientists believe that killer whales sing to ________.‎ A.warn each other of dangers B.keep in the same group C.send useful information D.enjoy themselves ‎[解析] 细节理解题。文章倒数第三段有说明,虎鲸“唱歌”是为了交流捕食或繁殖信息。‎ ‎[答案] C ‎11.From the passage, we can feel that the author is ________.‎ A.angry B.hopeful C.worried D.disappointed ‎[解析] 推理判断题。文章介绍观鲸船的噪音给虎鲸的交流造成了困难,从文章最后的叙述看,虎鲸数量在下降,而科学家也不明白其中的原因,因此显然作者对虎鲸的生存状况感到“担忧”。‎ ‎[答案] C D A Chinese television reality show called “Wonderful Friends”, where entertainers hug whale sharks, kiss lions, feed pandas and dress up baby chimpanzees, has come under fire from wildlife protectors who want it to be stopped, saying such activities are cruel and are dangerous for both the humans and animals.‎ The show is the latest hit from Hunan TV, which has attracted more than 196,000 followers. In each show, popular stars are given zookeeping tasks that allow them to interact with wild animals in order to bring humans and animals closer together.‎ Animal welfare advocates say that is exactly what should be avoided. Dave Neale of Animals Asia (an advocacy group) said, “It is hugely misleading to the public about the needs and welfare of captive animals(圈养动物) and putting the animals' welfare and health at risk.”‎ ‎“What they don't realize is that wild animals need space,” said Xie Yan, who is a zoologist. “Putting clothes on chimpanzees is not as adorable as you may think from the animals' point of view. I guess their idea was to get their viewers to love and protect the animals,” Ms. Xie added, “but we do not agree with this approach for entertainment.”‎ Using famous people to focus public attention on wildlife is a common practice in conservation campaigns. The Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming went to Africa 9‎ ‎ and highlighted the problem of elephant and rhinoceros poaching(偷猎) in the documentary “The End of the Wild”. “But differently, he, as a human observer, kept his distance and was there to see the hard truth of poaching, and that is different from a show created to attract viewers,” Ms. Xie said.‎ Critics also argue that the show violates (违反) Chinese wildlife protection laws.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。湖南卫视推出的真人秀电视节目《奇妙的朋友》在引起公众关注的同时,遭到了野生动物保护者的反对和批评。‎ ‎12.Which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A.Many people like the show because of its dangerous activities.‎ B.Xie Yan is against persuading the public to love and protect animals.‎ C.The reality show makes no difference to wildlife at all.‎ D.Some think the show is against wildlife protection laws of China.‎ ‎[解析] 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Critics also argue that the show violates(违反)Chinese wildlife protection laws.”可知,一些评论家认为这档节目违反了中国的野生动物保护法。故选D项。‎ ‎[答案] D ‎13.According to Ms. Xie, “Wonderful Friends” is basically different from “The End of the Wild”, because ________.‎ A.they both invite different popular stars to show up B.they shoot different numbers and kinds of species C.their filming locations are different D.their purposes and ways to approach animals are different ‎[解析] 细节理解题。根据文章第五段最后一句“But differently,he, as a human observer... created to attract viewers”可知,《奇妙的朋友》和《野性的终结》的区别在于它们接近动物的目的和方式不同。故选D项。‎ ‎[答案] D ‎14.What's the author's attitude toward “Wonderful Friends”?‎ A.Worried.
