真正的价值并不在人生的舞台上,而在我们扮演的角色中。 1 Unit 3 The world of colours and light Section Ⅰ Welcome to the unit & Reading-Pre reading Mona Lisa MonaLisa is a 16thcentury portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance (文艺复兴), which now is under the care of Louvre in Paris. It is perhaps the most famous painting in the world. But who was the heroine and what is the story behind the mysterious smile? Its identity remains uncertain. Some researchers say that she was the widowed (寡居的) Duchess of Milan. Others say it is possible that she was Mona Lisa Gherardini, the third wife of the wealthy silk merchant Francesco. The smile of Mona Lisa has kept people guessing. Someone says that the smile originated (起源,发端) from Leonardo da Vinci's mother, Caterina. Others say the smile is quite simple because women were taught to smile so as to add an air of mystery and elegance at that time. The truth is that this style of smile was not invented by Leonardo da Vinci. It can be found in a number of sculptures (雕塑) from the 15th century. No one knows the truth behind this famous painting except Leonardo da Vinci himself, but people are so fond of it and would enjoy guessing. In fact, there are many fine art forms in western countries and China as well. It's these fine arts and pop arts that make our life colourful. Now let's step into this module to learn more about them. 真正的价值并不在人生的舞台上,而在我们扮演的角色中。 2 Section_Ⅰ Welcome to the unit & Reading — Prereading [原文呈现] Visiting the masters Hi Yang Yan Here I am in Amsterdam. This trip has been fantastic①! As you know, I am with my aunt and grandmother. They are both good artists, and I'm thinking about starting painting myself after I get back. Let me tell you all about our trip. My grandmother really likes Picasso's paintings and thinks he is the greatest artist ever, so we started in Spain② and went to the city of Málaga, the birthplace③ of Picasso. Near the house where Picasso was born is a museum full of his art. Málaga is a lovely city and the architecture④ is beautiful. I was amazed to learn that Picasso had an output⑤ of more than 20,000 pieces of art. He did not just paint, but made sculptures and worked with all kinds of media⑥. He experimented with⑦ different styles of painting, but was most famous for his work in Cubism⑧, which often uses acute angles⑨ and where the world is represented as⑩ being constructed of cubes⑪ and rectangles⑫. So, after visiting Spain, we went to Paris. During our four days in Paris we spent one whole day at the Louvre Museum, where we saw the MonaLisa, painted by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. He created this work between 1503 and 1506. I was really impressed by this picture of a lady with a mysterious smile. By popular consensus⑬, this is the most valuable painting in the world — it is impossible to calculate⑭what price it would fetch if it ever came on the market⑮. Besides⑯ being a painter, da Vinci was also an architect, scientist and engineer. He designed many new inventions, including a primitive form of a helicopter⑰ and a tank⑱. Besides the works of da Vinci, the Louvre Museum has more than 6,000 other European paintings, ranging from the 13th century to the 19th century⑲. It doesn't have any modern paintings in it, however. Modern paintings are all kept at the Mus e d'Orsay. His paintings were typical of○21 a style called Impressionism○22. With Impressionism, the painter abandons○23 the idea of representing things exactly as they look in a photograph○24, but seeks to show movement and the feelings of the moment, through the use of colours, light and shadows○25. Monet loved to paint outdoors, and almost never used a studio. Though when he was younger he painted a wide variety of subjects, when he was older he most often painted the water lilies○26○27floating on the surface of the pond○28 in his garden. Yesterday, we went to the Van Gogh Museum, here in Amsterdam. Van Gogh was also a member of the Impressionist Movement○29. Altogether, he painted about 800 oil paintings○30 and did 1,600 drawings. One of his most famous oil paintings is ThePotatoEaters, which he painted in 1885. Among his works, my favourite is Starry ○31 Night, which he completed in 1889. Unfortunately, although van Gogh committed○32 his whole being○33 to painting, he received little reward○34 for his effort. The crowds were eager to see AlongtheRiverDuringtheQingmingFestival, the bestknown scroll painting in Chinese art history, at the Hall of Martial Valor. The work is sometimes referred to as China's MonaLisa. The scroll painting by Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145), measuring 24.8 centimeters wide and 528.7 centimeters long, depicts a lively and rich landscape in Bianjing —today's Kaifeng in Henan Province. Faced with its huge popularity, the Palace Museum said it would organize another exhibition of the work in 2020, the 600th anniversary of the Forbidden City. “With growing public demand for exhibitions of national treasures, waiting in line for hours has become routine,” the museum said in a statement. “For example, in 2002, when the scroll painting was displayed in Shanghai, viewers also waited six hours in line.” The work is seldom displayed because of its fragility. Wang Qi said she drove hundreds of kilometres from Hohhot in Inner Mongolia to visit the exhibition, and it took her most of the day to finally see the scroll painting.“It was too exhausting, but I still think it was worthwhile,” Wang said. The scroll painting forms part of a special exhibition titled “The Precious Collection of the Stone Moat”,which includes 283 ancient paintings and handwriting masterpieces once recorded in the Qing Dynasty emperors' catalog. The display is a main event marking the 90th anniversary of the museum's opening to the public. Shan Jixiang, the Palace Museum director, had earlier anticipated huge crowds.“However, we still need to let more people know about the exhibition because it took 10 years for them to have this opportunity,” Shan said. The museum suggested that visitors book tickets online in advance. The scroll painting is on display until Oct. 12. 语篇解读:本文介绍了《清明上河图》在故宫展览,迎来了大批的参观者,他们要排队 六个小时才能看到。 1.The underlined word “depicts” in Paragraph 3 means ________? I thought my son and daughterinlaw might be too strict about this. Was it right that the boys knew nothing of the hit film Frozen other than what their friends told them at school? My children had watched TV while growing up without any noticeable harm. However, a new book reminds me that screen time has consequences not only for learning but also for having healthy lives. The book's recommendations of a 45minute daily limit on passive watching and a regularly scheduled homework period make sense to me. When you exceed 45 minutes of what the book calls “daily media time”, the negative effects on educational, emotional and social development begin to kick in. Ninety minutes of screen time a day can lower a child's achievement nearly one grade level, according to the book. We have known for decades from solid data, such as the time diaries of University of Michigan, that high school students on average spend less than an hour a day on homework and more than twice as much time as on TV and video games. So how do you get teenagers to study more and spend less time on their gadgets? The authors offer a clever approach I have never seen seriously discussed in our long national homework debate. Each family should pick a reasonable amount of homework time, perhaps 10 minutes for every grade — so the second graders do 20 minutes a day and the 12th graders do 120 minutes. Once the student has worked the 真正的价值并不在人生的舞台上,而在我们扮演的角色中。 15 allotted (分配的) time, he or she should stop, even if the assignments are not done. The authors provide research and case studies that convince even me that if teachers have assigned more tasks than what fits into the reasonable period a family has adopted, they have probably included some useless busy work that is best not done at all. Once the homework is done, students are free to play with their devices, catch up on “The Walking Dead” or shoot some baskets. Learning should not be a nightly battle, the authors say, but a dependable part of the day. Good time management makes school life easier. 语篇解读:本文告诉我们,为了学生的学习和健康,要控制他们的娱乐时间,合理地给 他们安排家庭作业的量。 9.Which can be true about the author's family? A.His grandsons spend much time watching TV. A.Spending too much screen time is a big problem for students. B.High school students are short of necessary screen time. C.Screen time is becoming a source of tension in family.
