I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, "a brilliantly(精彩地)written book". However, he then went on to talk about Mr Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.       And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't. In the World Book Day's "Report on Guilty Secrets", Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out), I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell's 1984. I think it's really brilliant.       The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen,Charles Dickens,Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven't read him,but haven't lied about it either)and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in depth!      But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J.K.Rowling,John Grisham,Sophie Kinsella(ah,the big sellers,in other words). Fortytwo percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story(I'll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).‎ 1. How did the author find his friend a book liar?‎ A. By judging his manner of speaking. B. By looking into his background. C. By mentioning a famous name. D. By discussing the book itself.‎ 2. Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?‎ A. Charles Dickens is very low on the topten list. B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984. C. The author admitted having read 9 books. D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.‎ 3. By lying about reading,a person hopes to ______.‎ A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable C. learn about the book D. make more friends 1. What is the author's attitude to 58% of readers?‎ A. Favorable. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Friendly.‎ B ‎    If you could be anybody in the world, who would it be? Your neighbour or a super star? A few people have experienced what it might be like to step into the skin of another person, thanks to an unusual virtual reality(虚拟现实)device. Rikke Wahl, an actress, model and artist, was one of the participants in a body swapping experiment at the Be Another lab, a project developed by a group of artists based in Barcelona. She swapped with her partner, an actor, using a machine called The Machine to Be Another and temporarily became a man. "As I looked down, I saw my whole body as a man, dressed in my partner's pants," she said. "That's the picture I remember best."     The set-up is relatively simple. Both users wear a virtual reality headset with a camera on the top. The video from each camera is sent to the other person, so what you see is the exact view of your partner. If she moves her arm, you see it. If you move your arm, she sees it.   To get used to seeing another person's body without actually having control of it, participants start by raising their arms and legs very slowly, so that the other can follow along. Eventually, this kind of slow synchronized(同步的)movement becomes comfortable, and participants really start to feel as though they are living in another person's body.     Using such technology promises to alter people's behaviour afterwards-potentially for the better. Studies have shown that virtual reality can be effective in fighting racism-the bias(偏见)that humans have against those who don't look or sound like them. Researchers at the University of Barcelona gave people a questionnaire called the Implicit Association Test, which measures the strength of people's associations between, for instance, black people and adjectives such as good, bad, athletic or awkward. Then they asked them to control the body of a dark skinned digital character using virtual reality glasses, before taking the test again. This time, the participants' bias scores were lower. The idea is that once you've "put yourself in another's shoes" you're less likely to think ill of them, because your brain has internalized the feeling of being that person.     The creators of The Machine to Be Another hope to achieve a similar result. "At the end of body swapping, people feel like holding each other in their arms," says Arthur Pointeau, a programmer with the project. "It's a really nice way to have this kind of experience. I would really, really recommend it to everyone."‎ 2. The word " swapping" (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to ________.‎ A. building B. exchanging C. controlling D. transplanting 3. We can infer from the experiment at the Be Another lab that ________.‎ A. our feelings are related to our bodily experience B. we can learn to take control of other people's bodies C. participants will live more passionately after the experiment D. The Machine to Be Another can help people change their sexes 4. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.‎ A. technology helps people realize their dreams B. our biases could be eliminated through experiments ‎ C. virtual reality helps promote understanding among people D. our points of view about others need changing constantly C ‎    A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).     Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度). But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts (概念) they have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency (趋势)to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professors said.      In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.     The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.     The researchers' report said, “While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."     In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.     These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.‎ 1. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can       .‎ A. write more notes B. digest concepts better C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better 2. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be        .‎ A. skillful B. mindless C. thoughtful D. tireless 3. The author of the passage aims to       .‎ A. examine the importance of long-term memory B. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand C. explain the process of taking notes D. promote the use of laptops 4. The passage is likely to appear in       .‎ A. a newspaper advertisement B. a computer textbook C. a science magazine D. a finance report D Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the air you breathe.       Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or ‎ stroke(中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants(污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)considers to be of “moderate”(良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.       The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However,it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.‎ 1. The text mainly discusses the relationship between ______.‎ A. heart problems and air quality B. heart problems and exercising C. heart problems and smoking D. heart problems and fatty food 2. The underlined word “modest” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______.‎ A. relatively high B. extremely low C. relatively low D. extremely high 3. What can we learn from the text?‎ A. Eating fatty food has immediate effects on your heart. B. The EPA conducted many studies on air quality. C. Moderate air quality is more harmful than smoking. D. Stricter regulations on pollutants should be made.‎ 4. The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to ______.‎ A. inform B. persuade C. describe D. entertain 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文会后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎     It's OK to have ups and downs in your feeling, but having low self-esteem isn't OK. Feeling like you're not important can make you sad and can keep you from trying new things.   (16)   Having strong self-esteem is also a very big part of growing up; as you get older and face tough decisions-especially under peer pressure-the more self-esteem you have, the better.     If you think you might have low self-esteem, try talking to an adult you trust about it.   (17)   In addition, here are a few things that you can try to promote your self-esteem:     Remember that your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it is. If you are worried about your weight or size, you can check with your doctor to make sure that things are OK.   (18)   You should accept and love these things because they are part of you. Remind yourself of things about your body that are cool, like, "My legs are strong and I can skate really well."   (19)   The critical voice inside you will soon lose its power.      Praise yourself every day. Don't just say, "I'm so great." Be specific about something good about yourself, like, "I was a good friend to Jill today" or "I did better on that test than I thought I would."   (20)   Even if you've got room for improvement, realizing that you're valuable and important helps your self-esteem ‎ shine. A. Remember that there are things about yourself you can't change. B. It can keep you from making friends or affect how hard you try at school. C. It is important to know you're worth a lot. D. By focusing on the good things and your great qualities, you learn to love and accept yourself. E. When you hear negative comments in your head, mentally tell yourself to stop. F.
