I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way. Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.” Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought! Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you. It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm. I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world! 25. The author quoted Bill Gates’words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text________. A.better-known B.better-organized C.more persuasive D.more interesting 26. An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______. A.it is much cleverer than us B.it would take over the world C.it has the strong feeling of destroying us D.it would see us just as material 27. How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics? A. Optimistic B. Worried C. Disappointed D. Regretful 28. What does the text mainly focus on? A. The benefits of future robots. B. The new applications of robots. C. The concern for super intelligence. D. The popularity of robots in the future. C Octopuses (章鱼) are sea animals famous for their rounded bodies, bulging eyes, and eight long arms. They live in all the world’s oceans but there are especially more octopuses in warm, tropical waters. Octopuses, like their cousin, the squid (乌贼), are often considered “monsters of the deep”, though some species, or types, occupy relatively shallow waters. Most octopuses stay along the ocean’s floor, although some species are pelagic, which means they live near the water’s surface. Other octopus species live in deep, dark waters, rising from below at dawn and dusk to search for food. Crabs and shrimps rank among their favorite foods, though some can attack larger prey, like sharks. Octopuses typically drop down on their prey from above and, using powerful suctions that line their arms, pull the animals into their mouths. The octopus performs its famous backward swim by blowing up water through a muscular tube on the body called a siphon. Octopuses also crawl along the ocean’s floor, putting their arms into small openings to search for food Seals, whales, and large fish prey on octopuses. If threatened, octopuses shoot an inky liquid that darkens the water, confusing the other animals. The octopus can also change to gray, brown, pink, blue, or green to mix with its surroundings. Octopuses may also change color as a way to communicate with other octopuses. Octopuses are solitary creatures that live alone in dens (巢穴) built from rocks, which the octopus moves into place using its powerful arms. Octopuses sometimes even fashion a rock “door” for their dens that pull closed when the octopus is safely inside. 29. In which place can we find more Octopuses? A.The ocean near Hainan. B.The river near Canada. C.The Arctic Ocean. D.The South Pole. 30. What is a way for Octopuses to communicate with each other? A.Using special signals. B.Making special sounds. C.Living together in a group. D.Changing their own colors. 31. What do we know about Octopuses? A.They just stay in deep ocean. B.They eat food by using their teeth. C.They don’t like hunting large animals. D.They shoot an inky liquid to avoid dangers. D Because of the financial crisis in the US and UK, college students are beginning to struggle to find ways to pay their tuition fees and accommodations. Recently, two major US student loan (贷款) lenders, Citibank and JPMorgan Chase, announced they were leaving the student loan industry altogether. Because banks currently have a lack of credit, they are reluctant to offer students low-interest loans that need a several-year wait for any return of interest. In the US, many undergraduates fill up their financial needs with a private loan, although the majority can get government-funded loans. In the 2015-2016 academic year, $ 17 billion in private student loans was used to finance higher education. The lack of private funding has yet to be covered and will hit many US students hard. Across the Atlantic, UK students have been less troubled by the crisis. Most undergraduates in the UK cover their university expenses with government-funded loans and grants. Their biggest concern is a sudden increase in student rent. Most young professionals now rent houses, since 80 percent of UK mortgage schemes (按揭计划) have disappeared—a direct result of the credit crisis. This has boosted the house rent market. In large cities, UK students are paying almost 6.5 percent more in rent than the previous year. Figures from the UK organization Accommodation for Student show students in big cities such as London paying an average weekly rent of $ 203. Yet, despite students’ suffering, the number of this year’s university applications is expected to grow. During economic slumps, people regard further education as a way to survive tough job market. 32. What does the underlined word “reluctant” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Forced. B.Unwilling. C. Determined. D.Pleasant. 33. What is a big challenge to the American students according to the text? A.A lack of education. B.The low-interest loan. C.The short fall in private funding. D.A lack of government-funded loan. 34. What are the UK students most concerned about? A.House rent. B.Further education. C.Mortgage schemes. D.Government-funded loans. 35. What may be the best title for the text? A.College students in the US and UK are faced with their financial crisis B.It is the duty for the governments to solve college students’ financial crisis C.Further education is a good way for college students to survive tough job market D. The private student loan is a good way for college students to overcome the difficulties 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 36 achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning. We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers. 37 It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor. Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. 38 39 The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know. 40 A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as a fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts. A. Typically, the original message has changed. B. Finally everybody gets the meaning. C. Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. D. Knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. E. That’s what happens in daily life. F. This process is also found among scholars and authors. G. We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. Remembering My Father’s Vest People get into trouble because they don’t know enough to keep cool.
