This means that the temperature of the body changes based on the temperature of the surroundings. Therefore most lizards don’t live in cold places. Many species are found in wet tropics or dry deserts. Lizards live underground, on the ground, and in trees or plants. A few species spend some time in winter.‎ Lizards vary more in size and shape than any other group of reptiles. Some lizards are only an inch or two long. But the largest lizard, the Komodo dragon, can reach a length of 10 feet. Most lizards have four strong legs, but some have no legs at all. These lizards look like snakes. Lizards usually have a long tail, too. Many lizards have unique features. Some have horns. Others have a bony plate around the neck. These features help the lizards scare enemies away. A few species have extra skin on the sides of the body and spreading out the skin helps them move from tree to tree.‎ Most lizards are active during the day. Geckos, however, are usually active from dusk to dawn. Many lizards are able to change color to attract a mate, to scare another animal away, or to communicate with each other. Many lizards use their tails to escape from enemies. The tail breaks off when touched. A lizard usually can grow a new tail.‎ Most lizards reproduce by laying eggs. Most species lay several eggs at a time, but some kinds lay only one or two. Lizards usually bury their eggs under leaves and leave the eggs after laying them. A few types of lizard give birth to live young instead of laying eggs.‎ ‎ In some parts of the world people eat large lizards, such as iguanas. By cutting down trees to make room for buildings, people have destroyed the homes of some lizards. Selling lizards as pets also has reduced their numbers. The great Komodo dragon of Indonesia, for example, was almost wiped out. It’s now protected by law.‎ ‎24. I was drawn to his intelligence and his broad, comforting shoulders. Our marriage was very happy, and our sons, Viraj, an accountant, and Anurag, a lawyer, were warm, loving, and blessed with both a high level of integrity (正直) and a naughty sense of humour. It was as if I had everything I had wished for. When people said, “Life is not perfect,” I used to think, “Oh, but it very nearly is.”‎ But one Saturday night everything became different. Alok and I were about to leave our flat in Delhi for a party when all of a sudden he just passed away. It was a cerebral stroke (脑中风), instantaneous (猝发的) and without warning.‎ I was terrified, but felt I owed it to myself, to Alok, and to the boys to rise above the loss and use the strength our love had given me to go forward. I also had to deal with some pressing issues. Where would I live? Our home was a company-owned flat, and most of the services and equipment we’d enjoyed, like the club, medical coverage, even the phone, came with his job.‎ I made the decision to try and do as much as I could on my own, without asking ‎ for, or expecting, other people to help me. As a journalist, I had been privileged to share some truly exceptional life stories. I now had to handle my own life story, and accept change with as much courage as I could muster.‎ The journey ahead needed new skills. I finally found the right job, and today I am working in corporate communications. My life now is very different from what it was earlier. I understand that we are all given an inner strength, and that we truly grow up, regardless of age, when we learn to stand alone. I hope to start writing again. I would also like to give back to society, to work on a cause that I care deeply about, which is the focus of my book: to help others achieve better work-life choices so that a new generation of young people, and indeed a new generation of old people, can receive the support they need.‎ ‎28. Instead of staying at home, women should work, regardless of age.‎ B. Faced with a sudden change, we should be brave to adapt to a new life.‎ C. We should receive necessary support as we are getting old.‎ D. Society should give support to single women in trouble.‎ D ‎ Research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behavior when they are watched. Do you?‎ A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way ‎ people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box.‎ Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the author of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behavior. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realizing it.‎ It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites the fish that it is supposed to be cleaning.‎ The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption “I Want You”. It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese.‎ ‎32. According to the report, a person behaves better when he is being watched because ________.‎ A. he wants to be respected by others B. he needs to show he is a good person C. he desires others to like him more D. he feels he will receive some rewards ‎33. According to the text, which of the following statements is true?‎ A. People pretend to behave better when they are watched.‎ B. Fish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone.‎ C. People donate more money when they feel they are watched.‎ D. Soldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster.‎ ‎34. Where would the study described in the text most likely be found?‎ A. An entertainment magazine. B. A popular science magazine.‎ C. A tourist brochure. D. A science textbook.‎ ‎35. What is the text mainly about?‎ A. It describes changed behavior when observed.‎ B. It details ways to control people’s behavior.‎ C. It tells how to make people work harder.‎ D. It discusses different advertising methods.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多途选项。‎ If you’ve spent any time teaching, you’ve had problem students. They are kids who, despite your strong requests, refuse to hand in their homework, stay seated on their desks and so on. 36 They are ready to stop your lessons, disturb your flow, and challenge your patience. On the contrary, I usually like these problem kids. So what do we do with these problem students? 37 ‎ Firstly, be strict. Do not let them run your class. Use a strong tone when dealing with disturbance, and don’t delay in bringing a storm to an end. Your students will appreciate that someone is in control of their class.‎ Secondly, deal individually. No one deserves to lose face in public. 38 You are much more likely to get honest answers, when it’s just the two of you.‎ Last but not least, call for a positive identity. Nine times out of ten, your problem student has been told continuously that he or she is not behaving properly. To some level, they have agreed with those negative identities that others have looked on them. 39 If I have such a student, I will pull him or her aside and tell him or her what a great gift of passion he or she has. I will tell her that she was made to be a great catalyst (催化剂) for change because only truly enthusiastic people can take the lead.‎ ‎ 40 Or what failures have you endured? Tweet to me at twitter.com/eslbasics, or “like” me at facebook.com/eslbasics. Happy teaching!‎ A. I have three pieces of advice for handling problem students.‎ B. Each semester, you hope you won’t have them, but they do show up.‎ C. If you meet such students, you should stop your lesson immediately.‎ D. You can read some books to find effective solutions to deal with them.‎ E. What successful methods have been used with your problem students?‎ F. That’s why it takes one brave soul to search out that student’s positive identity.‎ G. When you have a serious word or concern to speak with the student, do it privately.‎ 第三部分:英语知识运用(共三节,满分55分)‎ 第一节:完形填空 (共20小题,每小题.1.5分, 满分30分) ‎ 阅读下面短文。从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ It was a cold night, and it was getting dark.
