In 1987, while he was a student in the first year of the University of Illinois, he had gotten $2,500 from a job working at a store, but that money would not go far to pay the four years of tuition (学费) and college expenses that added up to around $28,000. His middle-class family had already put his older brothers through college. While Mike’s parents would have helped him to pay, Mike decided he did not want his parents going into debt for him. He came up with an idea to solve this problem. Mike wrote to Chicago Tribune writer Bob Greene. He wanted each of the newspaper’s readers to send him a penny (分). Greene thought the idea sounded fun and agreed to do it. He shared Mike’s letter with his readers on September 6, 1987. “Just one penny,” Mike said. “A penny doesn’t mean anything to anyone. If everyone who is reading your reports looks around the room right now, there will be a penny on the corner of the desk, or on the floor. That’s all I’m asking. A penny from each of your readers.” In less than a month, the Many Pennies for Mike fund (基金) had around $23,000. Donations (捐款) were received from every state in the United States, and even Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas. So, Mike achieved his $28,000 goal and went on to learn food science from the University of Illinois. In the end, Mike had this to say about the whole thing, “I just want to express my thanks to everyone ... right now I’m feeling that the world is a pretty great place.” 24. What troubled Mike when he was in his first year at college? A. He couldn’t afford his tuition. B. He failed to find a part-time job. C. His parents were unwilling to help. D. His parents had huge debts to pay off. 25. Why did Mike write to Greene? A. To ask for help. B. To send his greetings. C. To express his thanks. D. To introduce himself. 26. What can we infer from Paragraph 4 about Mike? A. His fund needed more donations. B. He became rich and successful. C. His plan really worked. D. He asked for too much. 27. What’s the best title for the text? A. Pennies for readers B. The value of education C. Mike’s business in college D. The one penny college fund C The American Thanksgiving holiday is on Thursday. Many people will get together with family members for a big meal. It is a time to celebrate family, friends and everything there is to be thankful for. But some people do not look forward to spending a lot of time with their family. It can be stressful. Family members can start arguments with each other. Some people at the meal may have conflicting (冲突的) political beliefs. Conflict can even find its way into the kitchen, where all the cooking takes place. There is a saying called “too many cooks in the kitchen.” This means that, sometimes, if many people are trying to do a project together, it does not turn out as well as it could have if only one person were in charge. That is why people are offering Thanksgiving survival ideas on Twitter. Rick Irwin had one. “Say that you’re letting the dog out and use it as an excuse to disappear for several hours.” Tracy Brooks had a suggestion for limiting Thanksgiving dinner responsibilities. She wrote: “Be the last to arrive and the first to leave.” Since there is so much food at the Thanksgiving meal, Christine Turner suggested forgetting about your diet and wearing loose clothing. But, one fitness expert said people do not have to give up on their diets during the big meal. They can prepare foods that have fewer calories (卡路里). For example, they could bake some foods instead of frying them in oil. But other people are looking forward to the holiday. Sara Marie Brenner wondered why people need to “survive” Thanksgiving, at all. She wrote: “I enjoy the holiday.” 28. Why do some people dislike having Thanksgiving with their family? A. Some disagreements may arise. B. They live far away from each other. C. They have distant family relationships. D. The traditional cooking takes up too much time. 29. Which of the following is an example of “too many cooks in the kitchen”? A. Many friends came to help but ruined my plan. B. Nobody is willing to help me when I’m in trouble. C. I don’t know who to choose from the many helpers. D. Many cooks don’t know more about cooking than I. 30. What advice does Christine offer on Thanksgiving diet? A. Preparing low-calorie foods. B. Limiting food intake. C. Enjoying the food. D. Baking foods. 31. What is Sara’s attitude towards Thanksgiving? A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Critical. D. Uninterested. D Forget calling the front desk. If you’re a guest at an Affinia hotel, the staff (员工) will try to find out what you need just by looking at you. The Affinia Hotel Collection is improving service in its five hotels in New York City and one each in Chicago and Washington, D.C. Everyone from housekeeping to management will communicate with guests based on body language. A body language expert (专家) trained employees on what cues (信号) to look for. A guest who makes eye contact (接触) while walking down the hall, for example, may be open to conversation. A businessman frequently touching an ear is probably nervous and may be interested in a therapeutic pillow (理疗枕头). “So many companies, when they talk about service, they program it to how many rings till you answer the phone,” says John Moser, marketing officer for Affinia. “That doesn’t sound very reasonable. Let’s give employees some tools they can use to find out what’s the right way to talk with somebody at a particular time.” Patti Wood, a body language expert who carried out the Affinia training, says she has never seen such training given to all hotel employees. “All of the training is to make sure every single guest is treated as special,” she says. Staff questions about a guest’s day won’t disappear, Moser says. But, he says, small talk isn’t always enough to get a reading of a guest’s needs. “You can’t always tell from the first sentence whether someone is happy or unhappy,” he says. “Measuring some of the things they’re showing, with the way they’re talking to you, can help our employees provide a service that’s more personal for them.” 28. What are Affinia hotels doing? A. Understanding their employees better. B. Setting up new hotels in different cities. C. Improving their employees’ body language. D. Training employees to understand guests’ needs better. 29. What should a hotel employee do if a guest looks into his or her eye? A. Offer a pillow. B. Make small talk. C. Avoid speaking to the guest. D. Be open to the guest’s suggestions. 30. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. The company. B. The service. C. The phone. D. The hotel. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Living in a dorm (宿舍) this year? Here are some survival suggestions: Don’t just shout. Talk it out. Even if you knew your roommate before, living with him or her will be completely different. The key to making it work is communication. 36 If you still have problems after talking, turn to your teacher for help — especially if you think you need to change rooms or roommates. Make your room represent (代表) you. Your dorm room isn’t just the place where you sleep or study. It’s your home. 37 Show your personality. Put up the posters your mom never let you put up at home. Do whatever you can to make your room a comfortable place so you feel right at home. A clean room is a happy room. Cleanliness is important. Whether you share a space with one person or seven, you should have a cleaning plan. 38 Draw up a plan that can be stuck to by everyone so that your room is always clean. 39 One of the great things about living in a dorm is that you’ll probably meet people from other places who were raised differently than you were. Don’t laugh at people because of their differences. 40 You never know that guy or girl in your dorm might turn out to be one of your lifelong friends! A. Be open to differences. B. Make it as you as it can be. C. You may see students who dress differently. D. If there’s a problem, always talk it out with your roommate first. E. My hero is a middle-aged woman named Li Dan. She isn’t beautiful or rich, and she is just an ordinary street cleaner. So why is she my hero? First, I admire her because of her deep devotion to her common but useful work, which requires her to work for more than nine hours a day, rain or shine. Second, she has a kind heart and always manages to return the wallets or cellphones she finds while working to the owners. There’s a lot that I should learn from her. In short, my heroes are those who do small things in life, because it’s the small things that count. That’s all. Thank you!查看更多
