A complaint was made to the country’s Advertising Standards Authority(ASA) about two models who appeared in Gucci Cruise 2016 campaign. The ASA, which handles complaints across all media, considered one of the models “unhealthily thin” based on still photos that appeared at the end of a video ad online. Considering that the model’s body appeared to be out of proportion(比例) with her head and lower body and noting her unhappy facial expression and dark makeup, the organization stated that keeping the model in the advertisement was irresponsible. The ASA required Gucci to remove her still image from the video, which originally appeared on The Times’ website. The label responded to the complaint by telling the ASA the ad was aimed at the older audience and that it did not believe that the models could be seen as unhealthy, but the company did remove the image from its campaign. Gucci declined to comment to The Huffington Post. The image is just the latest on the list the ASA have banned, and the ruling comes a year after France voted to ban models under a certain body mass index. Media are responsible for teaching young girls the right things. Being unhealthily thin isn’t beautiful. Otherwise, they would sacrifice their health to lose weight to look thin. They should also be taught that health is much more important than external beauty. With many efforts currently being made toward a healthier idea of body image in the fashion industry, here’s hoping we have to see fewer of these occurrences in the future. 1. Why did the ASA ban the ad? A. Because it didn’t focus on old people. B. Because it had nothing to do with the promotion. C. Because it might mislead young audience. D. Because all the media objected to it. 2. How did Gucci react to the ASA’s decision? A. They had to withdraw the image with reluctance. B. They showed the model’s body mass index immediately. C. They withdrew the image with an apology. D. They placed the image on The Times’ website later. 3. It can be inferred from the text that France . A. supports the action of the ASA. B. France carried out the similar ban the moment the ASA took action. C. thinks the image banned of Gucci is the latest D. The model whose body mass index fails is not allowed in France. 4. In the author’s opinion, . A. today’s media have a good sense of responsibility B. media should take responsibility to influence the young C. young girls are conscious about their health and beauty D. what ASA did goes too far C One of my neighbors used to have a beautiful tree in her front yard. Her dad had planted it for her when it was nothing more than a twig and several years later it started to shoot towards the sky with amazing speed. Soon it blessed her with cooling shade in the summer and glorious, golden leaves in the fall. When the two-day snowstorm struck our town, heavy snow fell on the tree’s branches that were still full of leaves. The weight split that lovely tree down the middle. It was so sad seeing half of it laying on the ground after the storm. When I talked to my neighbor later, she said that the damage had been too much and that the entire tree would have to be cut down. Thankfully she had saved a few saplings from it that she hoped to replant in the future. Still, it was a shock to drive by her house the other day and see nothing but a stump in her front yard. I missed that tree. I missed its beauty, its leaves shinning in the afternoon sun. I missed seeing its limbs reach towards the heavens. I thought that the stump would be a sad reminder of its loss for a long time to come. My wonderful neighbor, though, had another plan. When I drove by her home today I saw a tiny bird feeder sitting on that stump and a colorful songbird having its dinner. It was such an affirmation of life. It was such a joy to see. I could feel my heart smile. Life by its very nature is a mixed bag. It hands us both beauty and tragedy, love and loss, pleasure and pain. What we do with it, however, is up to us. We can let it split us in two, or we can use even its hardest times to make our souls stronger and our hearts more loving. We can spend it complaining or we can use it to help others. 1. We know from the first paragraph that . A. the tree showed its beauty and benefits. B. the tree grew well with a lot of care. C. the author’s neighbor was good at planting trees. D. the tree was destroyed by an unexpected storm. 2. The author’s neighbor left a stump in her front yard to use it as . A. a reminder of loss. B. a symbol of hope. C. a place for birds to rest D. a place to feed birds 3. What does the author mainly want to show in the passage? A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Amazing things will happen. C. Life is attitude. D. I don’t want a perfect life. I want a happy life. D Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响)its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area. It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change. Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice. 1. Which of the following is true about the historical buildings according to the text? A. They are more valuable than the modern ones. B. People preserve them for the historical feel of the place. C. In some cases people have become attached to them. D. They are of great importance to the local economy. 2. Which of the following views will the author agree with? A. We should tear down some old buildings to make way for the modern ones. B. The conservative people don’t accept modern buildings which will spoil the area. A. The architect and planner should take responsibility to deal with the old buildings. B. Modern buildings can fit in with the historic area of a city. 2. The underline part probably means“ . ” A. that is being discussed B. causing problems C. that is aging D. that is striking 3. Which of the following cannot be concluded from the passage? A. The author has actually answered the first raised question in paragraph 1. B. The passage is to persuade people to accept modern buildings. C. The creative designing of architecture will take the fancy of the author. D. The tone of the passage is critical. 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选 项。To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck. 36 In my view, you have to combine intelligence with a willingness not to follow conventions when they block your path forward. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success. 1. Avoid foolish people. That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than yourself. It’s like playing any game. Even as a child, I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was. If you win, it gives you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isn’t simply to win; it’s to win at something really difficult. 37 2. Take risks To make a huge success, a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. Sometime or another, people will tell you that you're not ready to do something. If you are going to make a big jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. 38 Your very willingness to take on a very big goal will offend some people who will think that you are too crazy. You even have to give up your scientific heroes. 3. Have A Fallback Be sure you always have someone up your sleeve who will save you when you find yourself in deep shit. When they found themselves in trouble, many scientists in history had no one stand behind them. What a pity! 4. 39 . My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things that leave you flat. Bad idea. I'm not good enough to do well something I dislike. In fact, I find it hard enough to do well something that I like. And, that brings up another reason for having people around who care about you - you have to have people you can go to for intellectual help. It’s very hard to succeed if you don’t want to be with other scientists — you have to go to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you. And you have to chat with your competitors, even if you find them objectionable. So my final rule is: 40 A. Meet challenges with great courage. B. To put it another way, it’s to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top. C. If you can’t stand to be with your real peers, get out of science. D. In short, it’s to win fairly and lose gracefully. E. And, it's not enough to be smart - lots of people are very bright but get nowhere in life. F. The truth, however, won't save you from criticism. G. Never do anything that bores you 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分 45 分) 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出可以填入 空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 Mac was cycling along a road in Canada’s Yukon, halfway through a 2,750-mile bike tour to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. I like it very much mainly for the following two reasons. First, in the class, we are exposed to different kinds of English films, which help us improve both our English listening and speaking skills. Another interesting part is the amazing stories of the heroes, because they show us that a person can work hard to make a difference. As a young student, I suggest that the teacher choose some more films that appeal to us teenagers, thus making the course more interesting. Besides, more activities should be included so that we can have more chances to practice our English. I'd appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into consideration. I hope that the course will become more popular. Sincerely yours, Li Hua查看更多
