What to Expect The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bed covers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health. Accommodation Zones Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones2,3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential(居住的). Zones3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground. Meal Plans Available ♢ Continental Breakfast ♢ Breakfast and Dinner ♢ Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for over fifty years, was wheeled to the Park. Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groan (嘟囔声)when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined. Then Ms. Yates started to speak: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven’t appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the births of your children, in my imagination.” Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued: “It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.” “There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.” There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar(呼喊). Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown. 51. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic (怀旧的)skill. However, while today’s educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful---both in school and in life. Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it’s important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand. Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks---both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate. In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student’s writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. “Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Berninger said. Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe(转换) “those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind’s eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time. “In our computer age, some people believe that we don’t have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,” she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won’t have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.” 61. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past? A. The absence of blackboard in classroom. B. The use of new technologies in teaching. C. The lack of practice in handwriting. D. The popular use of smartphones. 62. Berninger’s study published in 2009 ___________. A. focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer. B. indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper. C. found that good essays are made up of long sentences. D. discussed the importance of writing speed. 63. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling? A. Spelling improves one’s memory of words. B. Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability. C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas. D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas. 64. What does “mind’s eye” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Window. B. Soul. C. Picture. D. Imagination. 65. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage? A. Computers can help people with their choice of words. B. Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching. C. Handwriting still has a place in today’s classrooms. D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade. D When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share. When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:“Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped. When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair(失望)and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other. For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: “Yes, I must tell….” We have never met. It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend. 66. In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to ______. A. become serious about her study B. go to her friend’s house regularly C. learn from her classmates at school D. share poems and stories with her friend 67. In Paragraph 3, “We gave London to each other” probably means ______. A. our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of us B. we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from London C. our unpleasant feeling about London disappeared D. we parted with each other in London 68. According to Paragraph 4, the author and her friend _______. A. call each other regularly B. have similar personalities C. enjoy writing to each other D. dream of meeting each other 69. In the darkest moments, the author would prefer to ______. A. seek professional help B. be left alone C. stay with her best friend D. break the silence 70. What is the best title for the passage? A. Unforgettable Experiences B. Remarkable Imagination C. Lifelong Friendship D. Noble Companions 第III卷 非选择题(本卷共6小题,满分35分) 第一节: 阅读表达 (共5小题;每题2分, 满分10分) 阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 A happy person has a longer life, collects more friends and has greater chances of developing successful relationships with people around him. So happiness is an important aspect of a person’s life, and how to achieve happiness in life has become an important issue. If you want to find lasting happiness, you must first be at peace with yourself. Are you contented with yourself? Are you pleased with your job? There are probably a number of answers to these questions, but what is the most important here is that you accept yourself for who you are. Think positively. Thinking in a positive manner is also a good idea to achieve happiness in life. Start filling your mind with positive thoughts the moment you wake up. If negative thoughts come to your mind, drive them out at once, and then look for the positive side in every situation. Stay away from negative-minded people, for they will frustrate your mood. You will notice that all the great things are happening around you. Make others happy. Another way to achieve happiness in life is to cheer someone up or make somebody happy. It does not matter whether it is someone you know or a stranger on the street. What is important is the feeling that you get after making others smile and giving them happiness. You will be happy when you see other people smile. It is good that these days, more people start learning how to achieve happiness in life. After all, in the end, a life filled with happiness and wonderful memories is much better than that filled with disappointment and anger. 71. What’s the main topic of the text? I think the last one is most useful. Because making others happy can make us happy as well.(Open) 第二节 书面表达(满分25分) Dear Chris, After reading your e-mail, I can see you are greatly annoyed with group learning. It’s common for you to feel like this if you are not familiar with the topic or you are not well prepared for the topic to be discussed. Besides, the ability to express yourself in Chinese is another reason which prevents you from voicing your own opinion freely. In fact, group learning is a fantastic way to practice your spoken Chinese and improve the ability to think in Chinese. In my opinion, what you are going to do is to be well prepared for the topic. For example, you can collect information about the topic and recite in advance. Additionally, use every chance to speak Chinese, in which way you can improve your oral Chinese quickly. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. You can’t speak fluent Chinese without opening your mouth. Your experience reminds me of my process of studying English. Perseverance is very important. Don’t lose hope. I’m here willing to help. Best wishes! W: I like healthy food. I don't like fast food or fried food. (Text 2) M: Have you seen the author's latest bestseller? W: I've just finished reading it. I really recommend it. (Text 3) M: Where's Lucy? She usually comes for coffee with you. W: Not today. She's got a headache and she's feeling a bit sick. (Text 4) M: Did you get the role you tried out for in the play? W: That role was given to someone else, but I got a better one. (Text 5) M: I thought I’d give Peter a call now. W: I’m afraid it’s too late at night. (Text 6) M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe. W: Yes. I'll leave in three weeks. But there are still a few things I need to do, like buying my plane ticket and figuring out what to do with my rented apartment while I'm away. M: You are not going to give it up, are you? W: Certainly not. I'll never find another apartment around here. But I don't like the idea of paying three months' rent on an empty apartment, either. M: Perhaps you could let it to someone else. W: Yes, but to whom? M: Let me see. Oh, I know just the person. An old friend of mine, Jim Thomas, is coming here to do some research this summer, from June to August. W: That's exactly when I'll be away. It sounds ideal. M: Tell you what, I'll be calling Jim late this week anyway, and I'll mention it to him then. W: Well, thanks, Bill. Let me know what happens. (Text 7) M: Hi, what can I do for you? W: I haven't received my grade report from last semester, and my friends all say they got theirs already. M: They were all posted at the same time. So, you say you haven't received yours yet? W: No, I haven't. M: Hmm? Did you have any problem last time you got your grades? W: Well, actually, I'm a first-year student. This is the first set of grades. My email address hasn't changed or anything, so... M: Wait, are you talking about your personal email account? W: Yeah. The school sends us our grades by email, right? M: No, we just post them on the university website. W: Are you kidding? I thought they were sent to us by email. OK, now I feel stupid. M: Don't worry about it. Starting college can be pretty confusing; there are a lot of new things you have to get used to. (Text 8) Ok, everybody. Can we start the meeting now? I'm Mike Johnson, chairman of the Graduation Committee for this year. You've all been selected as representatives to plan the graduation ceremonies. I am sending around a sheet of paper. Please write down your names and telephone numbers on it. We have many different things to do for the ceremonies. So, please also write down what part of the ceremonies you'd like to work on. Remember, as a representative, you'll have a lot of responsibilities. So only sign up if you feel you have the time to participate: When everyone has finished writing down the information, please return the paper to me. It's Tuesday today. One week from today, at our next meeting, we will start to discuss the details of the ceremonies. Is everything clear?查看更多
