B [2020·衡水中学高三考试]A letter written by Charles Darwin in 1875 has been returned to the Smithsonian Institution Archives (档案馆) by the FBI after being stolen twice. “We realized in the mid1970s that it was missing,” says Effie Kapsalis, head of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. “It was noted as missing and likely taken by an intern (实习生), from what the FBI is telling us. Word got out that it was missing when someone asked to see the letter for research purposes, and the intern put the letter back. The intern likely took the letter again once nobody was watching it.” Decades passed. Finally, the FBI received a tip that the stolen document was located very close to Washington, D.C. Their art crime team recovered the letter but as unable to press charges because the time of limitations had ended. The FBI worked closely with the Archives to determine that the letter was both authentic and definitely Smithsonian's property. The letter was written by Darwin to thank an American geologist, Dr.Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, for sending him copies of his research into the geology of the region that would become Yellowstone National Park. The letter is in fairly good condition, in spite of being out of the care of trained museum staff for so long. “It was luckily in good shape,” says Kapsalis. “And we just have to do some minor things in order to be able to unfold it. It has some glue on it that has colored it slightly, but nothing that will prevent us from using it. After it is repaired, we will take digital photos of it and that will be available online. One of our goals is to get items of high research value or interest to the public online.” It would now be difficult for an intern, a visitor or a thief to steal a document like this. “Archiving practices have changed greatly since the 1970s,” says Kapsalis, “and we keep our high value documents in a safe that I don't even have access to.” 4.What happened to Darwin's letter in the mid1970s? A.It was recovered by the FBI. B.It was stolen more than once. C.It was put in the Archives for research purposes. D.It was purchased by the Smithsonian Institution Archives. 5.What did the FBI do after the recovery of the letter? A.They proved its authenticity. B.They kept it in a special safe. C.They arrested the suspect immediately. D.They pressed criminal charges in vain. 6.What is Darwin's letter about? A.The evolution of Yellowstone National Park. B.His cooperation with an American geologist. C.Some geological evidence supporting his theory. D.His acknowledgement of help from a professional. 7.What will the Smithsonian Institution Archives do with the letter according to Kapsalis? A.Reserve it for research purposes only. B.Turn it into an object of high interest. C.Keep it a permanent secret. D.Make it available online. C While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world's first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher. Before you start imagining a humanlike robot walking around the classroom. Will is just an avatar (化身) that appears on the students' desktops, or smartphone screens, when ordered to come. The autonomous animation (动画制作) platform has been modeled after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show humanlike behavior. The digital teacher is assigned to teach “Be sustainable with energy” — a free program for Auckland elementary schools. Just like the humans it replaced. Will is able to instantly react to the students' responses to the topic. Thanks to a webcam and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up nonverbal cues (暗示). For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This twoway interaction not only helps attract the students' attention, but also allows the program's developers to monitor their involvement, and make changes if needed. Nikhil Ravishankar believes that Willlike avatars could be a novel way to catch the attention of the next generation. He says, “I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver costeffective, rich, educational experience in the future.” The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. Ravishankar says, “What was fascinating to me was the reaction of the children to Will. The way they look at the world is so creative and different, and Will really captured their attention.” However, regardless of how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. 8.What was special for some elementary school students in Auckland? A.A digital teacher taught them. B.They first saw something digital. C.This was the start of a new school year. D.They could get close to smartphone screens. 9.What is the benefit of this twoway interaction? A.It can smile back. B.It can use a microphone. C.It can talk any topic for free. D.It can change if necessary. 10.What's the author's attitude to Will's replacing human educators soon? A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful. C.Unclear. D.Disapproving. 11.What might be the best title for the passage? A.New Hightech Contributes to Education B.The World's First Digital Teacher Appears in the Classroom C.The World's First Digital Teacher, a Help to Students D.New Zealand Will Replace Teachers in the Classroom. D [2020·郑州市高三质量预测]Have you ever heard someone say “You totally look like you're a Jessica” or something similar? People seem to think that they know what kind of person a “Jessica” or a “Michael” looks like. Why is this? According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, humans tend to associate people's names with their appearances, and can even guess someone's name based on how they look. Researchers collected thousands of photos of people's faces. They labeled (贴标签于) each photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct. The volunteers were able to guess the right name 38% of the time. It seems that certain characteristics of faces give them clues about someone's name, Reader's Digest reported. However, this only worked when the volunteers looked at names from their own culture. In addition, the volunteers were not as good at guessing the real names of people who used nicknames more often than their real names. This may show that a person's appearance is affected by their name only if they use it often. “This kind of facename matching happens because of a process of a selffulfilling prophecy (预言), as we become what other people expect us to become,” Ruth Mayo from Tile University told science news website EurekAlert! Earlier studies have shown that gender and race stereotypes (刻板印象) can affect a person's appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. For example, people tend to think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. People may think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be “delicate” and “female”, just like the flower they are named for. 12.How is this passage developed? A.By giving examples. B.By asking questions. C.By introducing an experiment. D.By comparing different cases. 13.What can be inferred from the study? A.Volunteers found it much easier to guess nicknames. B.Names have different associations in different cultures. C.Volunteers could guess the characteristics of the interviewees. D.The people in the photos and volunteers were from the same culture. 14.Why do some people look like their names according to Ruth Mayo? A.They want to please everyone around them. B.They don't want to be different from others. C.They tend to become what others expect them to become. D.They like to copy famous people who share the same name. 15.What may be the best title for this passage? A.What determines our names B.Why we look like our names C.How we get rid of our stereotypes D.How stereotypes affect people's looks [2019·北京卷]Much of the work in today's world is accomplished (完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. __1__ Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent? __2__ They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team's performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn't evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team's performance. To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate (协调) their actions. __3__ In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team's performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.”__4__ Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tugofwar (拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force. __5__ An Ateam may require a balance — not just A players, but a few generous B players as well. A.It's not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent. B.Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent. C.The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers' attention. D.Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship. E.Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world. F.Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent. G.This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball. [2020·武汉调研]It was New Year time. Beijing, where I had come from, was already rather hot and dry in the June. And I was longing for a relaxed holiday in a quiet place with mountain and rivers. The night was so dark that I light a candle. And in the candlelight, I saw stars twinkling in the night sky. Late on, I looked into the darkness at the water and the woods cross the river. Cool breeze blew from the surface of the water gentle. The world was silent, but I walked quietly in the darkness as if afraid disturb the peace of the place. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 课时作业24 课时练(一) 阅读理解 第一节 【语篇解读】 文章介绍了四种既省钱、实用,又各具特色的水杯。 根据Klean Kanteen Reflect Bottle (Stainless steel), $31部分中的“The singlewalled stainless steel construction keeps your drink cold for hours”可知,Klean Kanteen Reflect Bottle可以让饮料数小时保持冰凉的状态,故A项符合题意。 根据YUANFENG Collapsible Water Bottle, $10部分中的“The soft, BPAfree bottle folds up to be only 4.5 inches tall when it's empty”可知,这种水杯的特点就是在不装水的时候可以折叠起来,这样可以节省空间。 根据第二段中的“It was noted as missing and likely taken by an intern... and the intern put the letter back. The intern likely took the letter again once nobody was watching it.” 根据第三段中的“Their art crime team recovered the letter but was unable to press charges because the time of limitations had ended.
