B 54-year-old Abdul has a special job. He has been working as a living statue (活体雕像) for over three decades, standing perfectly still for six hours a day and resisting people’s attempts to make him move or smile, anything that proves he is a living person. Abdul, known as “India’s Statue Man”, has been performing his daily routine ever since 1985, soon after getting a job as a security guard. His boss had recently traveled to the UK, where he was so impressed by the statue-like members of the Royal Guard outside Buckingham Palace that he wanted to do something similar back home. So he had his guards receive three months of training, where they would sit perfectly still for around four hours. They weren’t allowed to talk or smile, eat, drink, or even shoo away a fly if it sat on their faces. In the end, Abdul proved the best of the group, so he got the strange job. Abdul isn’t the only person in the world acting as a living statue, but what makes him special is the fact that he can do it for as long as six hours without even blinking his eyes. Once, a $ 155 prize was put up for anyone who can make him move a muscle. But try as they might, no one has ever succeeded. Actually, Abdul tries to move about as much as he can in his spare time, and only eats healthy home-cooked food, to keep his body in shape. But he claims yoga has been the biggest help. In the 32 years, Abdul has become a celebrity in India and other Asian countries. Many Bollywood celebrities have come to witness this living statue and try to finally make him move, but none have succeeded. Abdul earns about 10,000 rupees ($ 156) a month, which is enough to support his family, but definitely not enough to encourage his children to follow in his footsteps. It’s just too stressful and taxing on the body. “Despite all the hardship and health problems, I love my job and I am thankful to people for the love and respect they have showered on me, , , he says. “When the time comes, I want to die playing a statue. ” 24.What is Abdul’s daily routine? C People usually visit cafes to ease themselves of their tiredness and keep themselves from falling asleep, but Mr. Healing, a popular cafe chain in South Korea actually does the opposite. Customers can come in, order a drink, lie down a comfortable massage chair, and take a nap. Mr. Healing is the perfect place to go when you’re on a short work or school break and you need to catch up on sleep. You are asked to take off your shoes as well as any jewelry that might damage the chairs, after which you can choose a massage mode, from “stretch” or “sleep”.You can start with stretch for a few minutes, and then switch to sleep if you want to take a short nap. After it comes to an end, you are taken back to the cafe area to enjoy a coffee or one of the many other refreshing drinks on the menu. Mr. Healing cafes are so popular in Korea that customers are advised to make reservations in advance to be sure that a massage chair is available. “I have to sit on a chair and stare at a computer monitor all day due to my job, the healing room was truly effective to relieve tiredness and stress from weekdays,” said Park Hye-sun, a 24-year-old officer. These are facts I’ve learned from my 5-year-old son after he watched some networks, shows. He is greatly interested in scientific facts, so I was surprised the other day when I mentioned climate change. After a few more questions, I discovered that he’s never heard any of his favorite science shows mention climate change. It is strange, because climate change is one of the most important environmental issues of our time. My son can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about red pandas, except for the fact that their existence is being threatened by the changing climate. I reached out to PBS Kids, Nickelodeon, and Disney Junior to see if there was any truth to his claim. I was told that except an episode (一段情节) of Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins called The Big Storm, none of the three networks’ shows has ever discussed the causes of climate change on our planet. Maybe you’re wondering if the reason is that kids’ science shows don’t ever tackle troubling environmental issues. Why aren’t these networks introducing kids to such an important issue? According to Maria, spokeswoman for PBS Kids, it’s because the network feels that focusing on foundational science concepts is the most age-appropriate way to serve our audience. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather my kid learn a little about the melting polar ice caps than other things. And kids can handle climate change. Even young children are able to understand the basic idea. More importantly, they’re able to begin taking action to slow down global warming. My guess is that the networks are afraid that promoting the science on a politically controversial (争议性的) issue will lead them to lose viewers or advertisers. But if that’s true, and they’re choosing their bottom line over the education of America’s children, that’s a real shame. Kids need to learn about the issue that threatens their planet if they’re ever going to feel inspired to save it. 32.Why did the author feel surprised at her son? A.He has known many scientific facts. B.He has watched a lot of network’s shows. C.He didn’t care about global warming. D.He knew nothing about climate change. 33.The author watched the three networks’ shows in order to_____. A.get to know her son’s preference B.find the reason of her son’s ignorance C.find the causes of climate change D.help her son know environmental issues 34.What does the author think his son should do? A.Learn something about environmental issues. B.Help to slow down global warming. C.Discuss important issues with others. D.Learn to handle climate change. 35.What is the purpose of the author’s writing this text? A.To advice kids not to watch networks’ shows. B.To introduce some politically controversial issues. C.To express his attitude towards some networks. D.To call on all Americans to care about kids’ education. 第二小节、七选五 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Bottle Cap Alley is a special roadside attraction located at the north edge of the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas. 36 No one knows exactly how the tradition began, but some people believe that it started out as a dumping site (垃圾场) for two bars. 37 Besides, as word of the Bottle Cap Alley spread, other local bars started bringing in their bottle caps here as well. It is estimated that the tradition dates from four decades ago. 38 They set up a large sign over it, added lights so it could be visited at night and began promoting it as a part of the local sightseeing tour. The move didn’t sit well with many college students who wanted to make the tradition survive forever, but it did turn the alley into a popular roadside tourist attraction. Some people noticed that most of the beer bottle caps all came from American brands, and made it a point to add a variety of caps from imported beers as well, turning the place into an international bottle cap gallery.39 It is a gold mine for people who collect bottle caps, and it has been reported that some collectors travel to College Station from far away for the specific purpose of finding rare caps for their collections.40 However, considering that average visitors often take a few as souvenirs, it’s easy to see why constant bottle cap contributions are vital to the preservation of the alley. A. It’s easy for visitors to have their feet injured. B. It was recognized as a local attraction in the 2000s. C. Taking one or two caps may not seem like a big deal. D. It is covered with millions of beer and soda bottle caps. E. It is also famous as a place for people to find their fortune. F. Unfortunately, that made it attractive to bottle cap collectors. G. Customers who took their drinks outside followed their example. 第三部分 语言知识运用 第一节 阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的佳选。 Jake was born healthy, but his parents noticed there was something wrong when he was 4. I promised I would use the money wisely and do something meaningful. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
