Earlier the same day, the American coffee giant had announced on Chinese social media 23_____ it would be selling an additional 3,000 mugs after the first 1,000 had sold out so quickly.‎ ‎“The ‘cup is hard to find’ situation is rather unexpected,” Starbucks said in Friday’s statement, 24 _____(refer) to a trending hashtag on microblogging platform Weibo 25_____ (inspire) by the coveted cup—or double-walled glass tumbler, technically. The company’s initial plan had been to sell 1,000 of the mugs, 26 are molded to make any liquid poured in them take the shape of a cat’s paw—per day online 27 Thursday to Sunday.‎ Soon after the mugs debuted(首次推出)at brick-and-mortar Starbucks locations across China on Tuesday, however, the hype ( 大 肆 宣 传 )around them 28 (reach) a fever pitch—and even sparked a few coffeehouse conflicts. 29_____ 1,000 of the vessels were made available for purchase Thursday on Alibaba-owned e-commerce site Tmall, they sold out in less than one-tenth of a second. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.‎ A. professional B. exclude C. consider D. restlessness E. essential F. especially G. relatively H. rethink I.‎‎ distraction J. personal K. literally Do you ever draw? Most of us don’t, and the reason we usually leave drawing to the artists is because we’re not very good at it. Who wants to do something they’re bad at? But maybe we should 31 this assumption, especially since drawing has so many benefits, artist or not.‎ We should 32 this idea: What if drawing was just a low-stakes thing we did because we enjoyed it and it helped us see the world better?‎ ‎“We have misfiled the significance of drawing because we see it as a 33 skill instead of a 34 capacity,” writes design historian D.B.Dowd in his book, “Stick Figures:Drawing as a Human Practice.” “This 35 confusion has hindered our understanding of drawing and kept it from being seen as a tool for learning above all else.”‎ Here’s an example: You might enjoy eating at a restaurant that boasts an incredible chef, and you may also enjoy a great pasta dish you make at home. One doesn’t 36 the other; you can appreciate a meticulously assembled meal as much as a homemade one—they’re just different. The same is true for drawing.‎ Sitting(or standing!) with a pad and pencil, drawing something you see or imagine requires focus and a 37 quiet mind, something many of us are looking to cultivate. The first few minutes into the composition might be a bit frustrating and distracting, but keep going.I’ve found that once I settle into it, I get better at the actual drawing part, and it’s more enjoyable. But ‎ 38 if you aren’t used to drawing, you might be itching to run away and do something-anything-else at the start. To deal with your 39 , give yourself a time limit. Set a timer for 20 minutes; that should give you enough time to put in a genuine effort and get to the point where your mind will quiet down. You can always keep going if you want, but that timer will at the very least allow you to take your mind off outside 40 .‎ I. Reading Comprehension(满分 45 分)‎ Section A(共 15 题,每小题 1 分,满分 15 分)‎ Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Both are critical to producing citizens who can participate ‎44 in our democratic society, become innovative leaders, and benefit from the 45 enrichment that the reflection on the great ideas of mankind over time provides.‎ Parents and students who have invested heavily in higher education 46 graduates’ job prospects as technological advances and changes in domestic and global markets transform professions in ways that reduce wages and cut jobs. Under these circumstances, it’s natural to look for what may appear to be the most “ ‎47 ”‎ way out of the problem. Major in a subject designed to get you a job seems the 48 answer to some, though this ignores the fact that ‎ many disciplines in the humanities characterized as “soft” often, in fact, lead to employment and success 49 . Indeed, according to surveys, employers have expressed a 50 for students who have received a 51 education that has taught them to write well, think ‎ 52 , research creatively, and communicate easily.‎ ‎ 53 , students should be prepared not just for their first job, but for their 4th and 5th jobs, as there’s little reason to doubt that people entering the workforce today will be called upon to play many different roles over the course of their careers. The ones who will do the best in this new environment will be those whose educations have prepared them to be 54 . The ability to draw upon every available tool and insight— 55 from science, arts and technology—to solve the problems of the future, and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, will be helpful to them and United States.‎ ‎41. My father died when I was 15, and we had a hard struggle to make a living. And my mother, who was seriously ill in her last years, died while still in her 60s. My sister married soon after, and I followed her example within the year.‎ This was when I began to enjoy my first life. I was very happy, in excellent health. I had a good job in San Jose and a beautiful home up the peninsula in San Carlos. Life was a pleasant dream. Then the dream ended. I became afflicted( 使 苦 恼 ) with a slowly progressive disease of the motor nerves, affecting first my right arm and leg, and then my other side. Thus began my second life...‎ In spite of my disease I still drove to and from work each day, with the aid of special equipment installed in my car. And I managed to keep my health and optimism, to a degree, because of 14 steps. Crazy? Not at all. Our home was an affair with 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door. Those steps were a standard measure of life. They were my yardstick, my challenge to continue living. I felt that if the day arrived when I was unable to lift one foot up one step and then drag the other painfully after it—repeating the process 14 times, I would be through—1 could then admit defeat and lie down and die.‎ Then on a dark night in August, 1971, I began my third life. It was raining when I started home that night; strong winds and slashing rain beat down on the car as I drove slowly down one of the less-traveled roads. Suddenly the steering wheel jerked( 猝 然 一 动 ). In the same instant I heard the bang of a blowout. It was impossible for me to change that tire! Utterly impossible!‎ I started the engine and thumped( 砰 然 地 响 ) slowly along until I came to the dirt road, where I turned in and where I found lighted windows welcomed me to a house and pulled into the driveway and blared the horn.‎ The door opened and a little girl stood there. When she knew what happened to me, she went into the house and a moment later came out, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting. I sat there comfortable and dry, and felt a bit sorry for the man and the little girl working so hard in the storm.‎ About an hour later, the manʼs voice was heard, “This is a bad night for car trouble, but youʼre all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much do I owe you?” He shook his head, “Nothing. Cynthia told me you were a cripple(跛者). Glad to be of help. 1 know youʼd do the same for me. There’s no charge, friend.” I held out a five-dollar bill, “No! I like to pay my way.” He made no effort to take it and the little girl stepped closer to the window and said quietly, “Grandpa can’t see it. ”‎ 56. ‎“A cat has nine lives” here means .‎ A. a cat can live nine times longer than any other animal B. a cat can die ninth C. a lucky man cannot die easily D. the writer will live nine times 57. What do you think of the man who helped change the tire? .‎ A. Warm-hearted but pitiable B. Warm-hearted and happy C. A blind old man that has nothing to do every day D. A poor old man that is always ready to help others 58. How will the story be ended? ‎ A. The writer paid the little girl but the old man did not accept.‎ B. The writer drove away with tears running down his cheek.‎ C. The writer stayed there, without knowing what to do and how to do.‎ D. In the next few frozen seconds the writer felt the shame and astonishment he had never felt before.‎ 59. The best title for this passage perhaps will be .‎ A. The Old Man and His Daughter B. Base editing technology, just two years old, developed from the better known CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology. CRISPR/Cas9 molecules allow scientists to cut almost any piece of DNA in a cell and in this way disable or remove a gene. By contrast, a base editor molecule, using essentially the same DNA-targeting mechanism, chemically modifies a gene rather than cutting it out.‎ Base editing is better suited for making or correcting single-base “point mutations(基因突 变 )” in DNA—the cause of many inherited diseases and cancers—and in principle involves less risk of having collateral impact on other normal DNA. However, first-generation base editors operate efficiently in relatively few cell types. Together, the team systematically re-engineered the principal existing set of base editors, known as BE3, BE4Gam and xBE3, to boost their production in cells—low production had been a problem in many cell types. The optimized editors, unlike the first generation version, work efficiently in a wide variety of cell types and model systems, including mouse and human cell lines, and even liver cells in live mice.‎ ‎“These new base editors allow us to model and study diseases such as cancer in new ways, but they really have applications all the way across biomedical research,” said senior study author Dr. Lukas Dow, an assistant professor of biochemistry in medicine and a member of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine, and a paid advisory board member for Mirimus, Inc., a company focused on genome(基因组)editing technologies to develop animal models.‎ The Weill Cornell Medicine scientists now plan to use the new editors for several research applications, including the investigation of mutations associated with cancers to find suitable targets for therapies. “There is a huge list of cancer-linked mutations whose precise roles in cancer are unknown, and now with these optimized tools we can study them affordably and in a feasible time frame,” Dr. Dow said.‎ The optimized editors are also being studied by researchers working on other applications, including potential therapies for genetic diseases.‎ 56. How many types of molecules are mentioned in the first two paragraphs?‎ A. 1 B. 2. C. 3 D. 4‎ 57. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word collateral in paragraph 3?‎ A. connected B. immediate C. positive D. healing 58. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A. Scientists think it’s better to remove a gene than to edit it.‎ B. The first-generation base editors fail to work in cells.‎ C. Base editing technology is of great value only in biomedical research.‎ D. It is unknown why mutations cause cancer.‎ 57. Which is the best title for this passage?‎ A. DNA Editing Just Got Easier B. Say Goodbye to Genetic Disease C. The Birth of a New Technology: Base Editing D. Mutations in DNA Section C(共 4 题,每小题 2 分,满分 8 分)‎ Directions: Choose from the sentences A—F to complete the passage. There are extra sentences which you do not need to use.‎ A. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they are to be depressed.‎ B. Maybe you feel comforted by the notification sound that someone has sent you a message.‎ C. Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health.‎ D. The issue is how much time spent on social media is too much.‎ E. Teenagers are affected by the 24-hour demands of their social media accounts.‎ F. But depression is a more serious condition.‎ Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smartphone to see how many ʽlikesʼ youʼve received for your latest post?‎ Donʼt worry, youʼre not alone. We check our phones an average of 150 times a day, and around 30% of the total time spent online is dedicated to social media. 67. This is something particularly afflicting(折磨)young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. 68. In tests, those people who checked social media frequently were 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to those who spent most of their time generally surfing the internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk. The study found that exposure to “highly idealised representations of peers on social media elicits feelings of envy and the distorted belief that others lead happier, more successful lives.”‎ Some of us certainly feel sad when weʼre ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. 69. Clinical psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, “It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships.” However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to worsen pre-existing issues than directly cause them.‎ ‎70. It found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.‎ Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we donʼt want to miss out on a conversation thatʼs taking place online.‎ But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.‎ I. ‎71. Summary Writing(满分 15 分)‎ Directions: Write a summary of the passage in more than 60 words and the original sentences in the passage are not allowed to use.‎ Who is in control of your life? Who is pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it’s other people—society, colleagues, friends, or our family. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry(模仿), their passions a quotation.”‎ When people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their drug, we worsen our own existence to get our own constant drug of approval.‎ But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. Moreover, people have their own business, and in the end, they’re more interested in themselves than in you. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.‎ So how can we take back control? I think thereʼs only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed( 强 加 )from the outside by others, but values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.‎ II. You have so many applications and software and platforms that are going to come in and provide information and service in these two fields, which means a lot of health care and education sectors will be radically changed and a lot of jobs will be lost.‎ Now, where will the new jobs be found? Well, the one sector of the economy that can’t be easily duplicated by even smart technologies is the caring sector, the personal care sector. That is, you can’t really get a robot to do a great massage or physical therapy, or you can’t get the kind of personal attention you need with regard to therapy or any other personal service. There could be very high-end personal services. Therapists do charge a lot of money.‎ I think there’s no limit to the amount of personal attention and personal care people would like if they could afford it. But the real question in the future is how come people afford these things if they don’t have money, because they can’t get a job that pays enough. That’s why I wrote this book, which is about how to reorganize the economy for the future when technology brings about destructive changes to what we used to consider high-income work.‎ ‎(Now listen again, please.)‎ If you are young and thinking about your career, you’ll want to know where you can make a living. What is the speaker’s book about?‎ Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.‎ M: Yesterday I was talking to my students and they were surprised when I admitted that the shirt I was wearing, I had had for over 10 years. Do you like to keep your clothes a long time?‎ W: It depends on the clothes. If I really like them, I might. M: How often do you throw away your clothes?‎ W: Once or twice a year. I’ll go through my wardrobe and throw out things that are too small or have started to look shabby.‎ M: So you donate them or just toss them?‎ W: I put them in the recycling, and hope they’re going to be remade into something else. I don’t think anyone else wants to wear them.‎ M: What about furniture? How often do you try to get new furniture?‎ W: Almost never. I’ll put up with what I’ve got. It seems like such a waste to throw out such large things.‎ ‎ M: Yeah, but you never want to replace the couch or the chair?‎ W: The couch has been replaced three or four times, but we’ve still got the same kitchen table. We had got to get some new chairs.‎ M: I’ve never been a big furniture guy, but when I see something that’s really cheap, I will buy it. I wouldn’t buy new furniture.‎ W: Who buys new furniture? It’s so expensive! Why would you pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for that when you can just buy one used or whatever for ten bucks or twenty bucks?‎ M: When we moved into our house, we did go to a furniture store and bought all new furniture. It’s kind of nice.‎ But I almost exclusively buy second-hand furniture now.‎ W: Yeah. That’s why I like something that’s made with metal or wood because I think it’s going to age well.‎ Plastic, not so much.‎ M: Yes. What about electronic goods, like getting a new TV, a new refrigerator, stuff like that? How often do you buy?‎ W: We just wait until the old one breaks down.‎ M: What about the TV though? The TVs don’t break down. They go on forever. How often do you think, oh I want a new TV, I want a new nicer TV?‎ W: Our last TV broke. ‎ M: It did?‎ W: Well, we had lightening hit the house, and we lost several electronic items. M: Wow. I did not know that could happen.‎ ‎(Now listen again, please.)‎ M: Yesterday I was talking to my students and they were surprised when I admitted that the shirt I was wearing, I had had for over 10 years. Guided Writing Dear Mike,‎ It has been a long time since I last wrote to you. As for your worry about whether to be a doctor as your parents hope or to take up E-sports as your career, I have some suggestions.‎ I can see from your letter that you are eager to choose E-sports as your future career. If you are quite confident that as an E-sports player, you can live a comfortable life in the future, I suggest you make a detailed introduction of E-sports to your parents, let them know what E-sports is and that E-sports is your lifelong dream. If you are forced to give it up, you’ll certainly be regretful in the future. Communicate with your parents like a mature person instead of quarreling with them, and they will understand you finally.‎ But to be frank, if you are not actually very talented with E-sports, it is wise of you to regard it only as a hobby. After all, the market of E-sports is always very competitive. What your parents look forward to is nothing but a bright future of you. Have you ever heard a saying that you will suffer if you don’t take an old man’s advice?‎ So think twice, judge yourself and make a wise choice. Hope you will not be worried about it any more.‎ Your sincerely, ‎ May
