Speaking at the premiere(首映)of a documentary film about his life, Stephen Hawking said: “I think the brain is like a program in the mind, which is like a computer, so it’s theoretically possible to copy the brain onto a computer and so provide a form of life after death.” “However, this is way beyond our present scientific and technological level. I think the conventional afterlife is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark.” The author of “A Brief History of Time”, who earlier approved of the right for the deadly ill to end their lives as long as safeguards were in place, suffered from motor neurone(运动神经元)disease at the age of 21 and was given two to three years to live. “All my life 1 have lived with the menace of an early death, so I hate wasting time,” Hawking said on Thursday night, using the computer-created voice he controls with a facial muscle and a blink(贬眼)from one eye. The documentary explores a brilliant schoolboy with unclear handwriting who enjoyed the life of Oxford University before illness led to a lifelong desire of discovery about the origins of the universe, which began as a graduate at Cambridge University and has shocked the world. Hawking’s sister Mary says in the film that her brother was highly competitive and curious about everything in a household which friends described as very academic, and explains how she received a toy house as a present when they were children, to which Stephen immediately added electricity. She said that life with her brother was attractive and exciting. “It’s a waste of time arguing with Stephen because he always manages to turn the argument round,” she said. The film goes back to his childhood and his student days and shows the scientist, who uses a wheelchair, at home with break It also explores his family life with his first wife, Jane, and their three children, the breakdown of their marriage and his marriage to one of his carers. 17 Jane appears on camera to explain how the pressures of caring for the children and the increasingly disabled Hawking became even worse once full-time nurses were brought into the home, destroying any privacy(隐私). His second wife and former nurse, Elaine Mason, does not appear in the film, and Hawking introduces their 1995-2007 marriage with a few pictures and a brief descripti0n. 24. Which statement is most probably agreed with by Hawking? A. People can become alive again after they die. B. Brains could exist out of the body. C. Brains can now be copied onto computers. D. People are expected to continue living in a certain form after death. 25. To the will of incurable patients to end their lives. Hawking . A. is conditionally agreeable B. holds a negative attitude C. shows his deep concern D. expresses his strong approval 26. According to Mary, when they were children . A. Hawking gave her a toy house with electricity B. they never argued with each other C. she didn’t like living with Hawking because of his competitiveness D. Hawking showed outstanding talent for physics 27. It can be inferred that . A. Hawking now has to use his wheelchair wherever he goes B. Hawking’s first wife was once a full-time nurse C. Jane felt too stressed to continue her marriage with Hawking D. the film mainly presents Hawking’s student days C In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略). 17 One tactic involves where to display the goods. Foe example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later. Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up. When it comes to the selling o f houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses. 28.Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section? A. To save customers’ time. B. To show they are high quality foods. C. To help sell junk food. D. To sell them at discount prices. 29.According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy? A. Opening the store early in the morning. B. Displaying British wines next to French ones. C. Inviting customers to play music. D. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread. 30.What is the California builder’s story intended to prove? 17 A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider. B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells. C. An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste. D. A good first impression increases sales. 31.What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers. B. To introduces how businesses have grown from the past. C. To report researches on customer behavior. D. To show dishonest business practices. D DNA left at a crime scene could be used in the future to build up a picture of an offender’s face, it was revealed tonight. A first step towards genetic mugshots has been taken by researchers in the US who link specific DNA markers with face shape. To identify the genes, they focused on known mutations(突变) that cause changes of the face and head. Normal versions of these genes were found to influence individual features. For instance, one gene affected the lips, another the shape and configuration of bones around the eyes, and a third the appearance of the mid-face and skull. In total, 20 genes had “significant effects” on facial appearance. Lead scientist Professor Mark Shriver, from Pennsylvania State University, said: “We use DNA to match to an individual or identify an individual, but you can get so much more from DNA. Currently we can’t go from DNA to a face, or from a face to DNA, but it should be possible.” The implications are far reaching, raising the possibility of creating a data bank of facial types based on genetic markers. DNA from a crime scene could then be used to produce a rough image of the face of an offender or victim. Such genetic mugshots may be more reliable than computer-generated “e-fits” based on witnesses’ recollections. Other uses of the technique might include proving the identity of fathers in paternity cases, or visualising our remote ancestors from fossil DNA. 17 The scientists wrote in the online journal Public Library of Science Genetics: “Such predictive modelling could be forensically useful; for example, DNA left at crime scenes could be tested and faces predicted in order to help to narrow the pool of potential suspects. Further, our methods could be used to predict the facial features of descendants, deceased ancestors, and even extinct human species. In addition, these methods could prove to be useful diagnostic tools.” The team developed a model which first established a range of physical face shapes from people of mixed West African and European ancestry from the US, Brazil and Cape Verde. Measurements were taken of thousands of point co-ordinates on grids placed over 3D images of the faces. Statistical methods were then used to determine the relationship between facial differences and the effects of gender, ethnic ancestry and individual gene variants. 32.The underlined word “mugshots” in the second paragraph most probably means _________. A. different faces B. characteristics C. pictures of faces D. genders 33.What can be inferred from the passage? A. DNA has been used to build up a picture of an offender’s face. B. It may be much easier to catch criminals with the help of DNA. C. In all, 20 genes had “significant effects” on facial appearance. D. One gene can affect more than one part of your face. 34.According to Professor Mark Shriver, we know_________. A. they can merely match to an individual or identify an individual B. there is a possibility of going from DNA to a face C. DNA could be used to produce a rough image of an offender’s face D. this technology is more reliable than computer-generated “e-fits” 35.What is the most possible title of the passage? A. Creating a data bank of DNA B. Recognizing the DNA of criminals 17 C. Predicting the location of offence using DNA D.
