Weather is a safe topic of conversation. As a group, we Americans seem to enjoy chatting with those around us. Whenever we stand in line at the grocery store, we like to take part in this kind of conversation with other people standing in line with us. If I were seated next to another American on any form of public transport, I’d expect both of us to make a harmless comment about the weather as a way of greeting each other. At parties, the weather is a common topic, especially with those you are meeting for the first time.‎ In contrast(相反), we are taught to avoid certain topics like religions(宗教) and politics.‎ Weather is everywhere, it affects everybody and it’s a fairly objective, neutral(中性的) topic. You don’t have to have an opinion about it, just state a fact. What is truly interesting is the fact that we can go on and on about it.‎ My Chinese friend has a hard time understanding why we put so much effort into this topic—and why I warn him about bringing up much more “interesting” subjects like salaries(薪资) or how much something costs.‎ Sometimes it is tricky(棘手的) to make one’s way on winding cultural roads, especially those that are never taught in books.‎ ‎9.What does the underlined word “fascination” in Paragraph 4 mean? ( )‎ A.Advice. B.Prediction. ‎ C.Strong interest. D.Wild imagination.‎ ‎10.In the author’s opinion, weather is a common conversation topic in America because . ( ) ‎ A.Americans don’t like to talk about other topics except weather ‎ 6‎ B.weather affects everyday choices like clothes and changes a lot ‎ C.weather is quite an objective topic and doesn’t cause bad feelings D.Americans use it as a greeting when they can’t bring up much more interesting subjects ‎11.What can we learn from the passage? ( )‎ A.Weather is a good topic of conversation all over the world.‎ B.Cultures that are not taught in books should be written about more.‎ C.Topics for conversation should be well considered in the United States.‎ D.The more topics you are interested in, the better you can be at small talk.‎ Ⅲ. 回答问题 ‎ We see them everywhere—on boxes of food, on packages and on CDs.They, of course, are bar codes. The invention of bar codes has changed the way we shop and how companies learn where their products are.‎ It was two university students from America, Bernard Silver and Norman Woodland, who first got the idea ‎ of bar codes. In 1948, they heard that the president of a food company was looking for a way to easily get information about what was being sold to customers. They tried to help by using a code system. They invented a large electronic reader to read the codes. However, computers couldn’t easily record the data that was read.‎ Then, in the 1960s, David Collins made important developments in bar codes. He developed a system for recognizing train carriages. In order to develop the recognition system for other kinds of businesses, Collins started his own company. In 1969, Collins’s company put a bar code reading system in a car factory, showing that bar codes could be useful.‎ Shortly after Collins started his company, an American electronic company called RCA also saw the potential(潜力) of bar codes to help businesses.RCA’s system, which recorded how much of a product was sold, was not perfect.Since bar codes were not common, not all products had them and different companies used different codes. Then, Woodland helped develop the Universal Product Code (UPC), which gave every product a code that included information about the manufacturer and the kind of product being sold. This made bar codes much more practical.‎ In addition to shops, hospitals use bar codes to recognize patients by giving them cards with bar codes on them.Libraries use bar codes to record which books have been lent, and airports use them to find out where bags are going.Bar codes have made life much easier and simpler.‎ 6‎ ‎12.What changed the way we shop? ‎ ‎  ‎ ‎13.Who first got the idea of bar codes?‎ ‎  ‎ ‎14.Why did Collins start his own company?‎ ‎  ‎ ‎15.What do hospitals use bar codes to do?‎ ‎  ‎ ‎16.What is the passage mainly about?‎ ‎  ‎ 6‎ ‎【参考答案】‎ Ⅰ.[主旨大意] 本文是一篇记叙文。 ‎ ‎1.B 根据下文的“he would also cry”中的also可知,上文出现的动词是cry。故选B。‎ ‎2.D 根据下文的“The grass was cut.The flowers were starting to come out.” 故选A。‎ ‎4.C 根据下文的“Have a good rest here and eat some cookies.” ‎ ‎5.B 根据下文的“When Ralph found that he could not have the white rose, he began to cry…” ask for…“索要某物”。 ‎ ‎7.B 根据上文的“It was so painful that he could not use it for some time.” ‎ ‎12.The invention of bar codes has changed the way we shop./The invention of bar codes./Bar codes.‎ ‎13.It was two university students from America, Bernard Silver and Norman Woodland./Bernard Silver and Norman Woodland.‎ ‎14.In order to develop the recognition system for other kinds of businesses./Because he wanted to develop the recognition system for other kinds of businesses.‎ ‎15.Hospitals use bar codes to recognize patients (by giving them cards with bar codes on them).‎ ‎16.The development of bar codes and the effect on life./How bar codes have developed and how they ‎ 6‎ help people in life.(两个点)(达意可得分)‎ 6‎
